Dr. K. Sundar Kumar is the HOD-CIVIL at Bonam Venkata Chalamayya Engineering College. He completed his B.Tech. in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering, University Campus, J.N.T.U.K, Kakinada in the year 1996 and his postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Pollution Management from the National Institute of Ecology & Environment, Kakinada, in June 2002. Further, he obtained a first-class M.Tech. with Distinction in Environmental Engineering and Ph.D in Environmental Engineering (RS & GIS Applications). He holds a total of 25 years which includes 10 years in Usha Rama College of Engg. & Technology as Professor, 2 years as H.O.D in KLU as Associate Professor, 2 years in GMRIT as Sr.Asst. Professor, 6 years in PVP SIT as Asst. Professor and 5 years in the Construction industry. He has been awarded with the “Best Teacher” in the Department of Civil Engineering for the academic year 2016- 17 by Usha Rama College of Engineering and Technology. He is a life member of the Indian Society for Technical Education, the Institution of Engineers and the Environmental Society. He has a total of 68 publications, 58 in international journals and 10 in National & International Conferences. He has filed two patents.

You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

I am gaining satisfaction in training students to achieve more in their lives, I always encourage students to move with me to carry out research and innovation and mentored several successful candidates. I too was able to constantly upgrade my knowledge by sticking to this field. Shaping young minds and mentoring students is in fact great responsibility that only a teacher can take.

Being the HOD of the Department of Civil Engg, BVC Engineering College what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

Leadership in my opinion and my way of leading the department is that plan the perfect way of doing things and finishing tasks by providing all resources and a suitable environment for it and do yourself also and demonstrate as a role model to the staff. 

The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institute?

In BVC, Students will learn not only theoretical concepts but also gain practical experience through internships and students will learn from observing real-life practical problems through their project works. Rigorous training and placement activities secure them sure job opportunities.

How does the curriculum of BVC Engineering College ensure the best practice of industry?

In BVC, While framing the course structure and syllabus experts from different sectors of the society who can contribute in this regard were involved for example, senior most professors from IIT and NITs will sit and discuss the syllabus. To represent the current industrial needs experts like successful industrialists or entrepreneurs will be involved to give their input. Also, an alumnus who really faced the outside competitive world as a product of BVC will be involved in fine-tuning the course structure as well as the syllabus. All these efforts will ensure the provision of the best engineering education in the context of industrial practices.

What do you think should be the Institute’s top priority over the next 5 years?

The BVC is heading towards achieving the best rank in the NIRF ranking bands. The institute has a great vision of becoming a University by joining all the three sister concerned institutes. The institute aims to become the best educational giant organization and transform KONASEEMA into the technological hub of excellent human resources.

What do you see as your Institute’s greatest strengths?

Dedication to developing the institute and group, plans, visions and strategies to become a world-class institute attracting the global student community, timely payment of salaries and wages and continuous support for the welfare of the staff, encouragement in the form of incentives, promotions and salary hikes for the faculty who are involved in research and development activities are some of our biggest strengths. We have already achieved belief and trust among the parent community for several decades about the institutions. What would you like people to know about your college they may not know?

The college will not only give you the best education in Engineering but also stand as a leading top world-class institute in the future which gives a lot of advantages throughout the career of the student. Any message you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

You need to choose the right institute where teaching-learning is filled with commitment and is target-oriented. Learn as much as you can and keep your horizons open to all but not limited to a specific field or area. Be more multidisciplinary and with multiple skills. The current global market needs shall be understood carefully and develop a good vision for your career.
