What students say about University of Maryland
Likes
- I believe that the curriculum is highly dependent on the professor, therefore, it is important to read professor reviews before enrolling in classes.
- Networking is a must in the US, and career fairs are a good opportunity for it.
- The campus life is quite good; there are plenty of extracurricular activities to choose from. These activities range from trekking to singing and whatnot.
- There are some facilities available for graduate students, but they are scarce. Therefore, most grad students stay off-campus in private properties, which are abundant and easy to commute from.
- Almost all of the professors work in industry and have relevant experience to teach the subjects.
- If you need to learn a lot and grow to great heights, UMD is the best place.
Dislike
- The tuition fees for Masters in Software Engineering are already quite low (USD 30K). The department does not offer any scholarships.
- Room and board for freshman dorms is very expensive, considering the poor quality of both the dorms and the food in the cafeteria halls

- My coursework was a perfect blend of technical and non-technical subjects, providing students options with various fields to choose their careers in including project management, Business Analysis, product management, Data analysis, Data engineering and even SDE.
Overview:
I chose this university as this university is a public Ivy League school and is well reputed, plus the course it offered was among the top 10 schools in the USA. As stated earlier the program was a perfect blend of technical and non-technical subjects, something that I was looking for.
Fees:
The total tuition fee for my course was around 64,000$ back in fall 2021. This was just the tuition fees for the course which had 30 credits. In addition to that you have to take care of the other expenses such as rent, groceries, insurance etc. The fees now would be somewhere between 60 K- 70 K $.
- Likes:
- Good curriculum, great ranking, reasonable tuition fees, safe area, good alumni network,
- Easy to blend in, great curriculum, good extra curricular activities present, good accomodation available, community is well knit, health center is available at a cheap rate
- Dislikes:
- Lots of students, so sometimes that becomes an issue, teacher to student ratio is not so high, good accomodation is available but it's limited so one has to be proactive
Overview:
Very good experience, good tuition fees, good curriculum, alumni network Is decent
Fees:
40000 USD
Overview:
Overall experience I would say has been great so far. Right from the moment I came here it has been a smooth ride. I enjoyed the courses I chose, I made good friends. Also to mention, there is a huge fitness centre in the university so that’s helpful as well.

30000$ is the total fees

Overview:
great place to be, surrounded by students which creates a different vibe to hustle, party clubs are also present around, many eateries
Campus Life:
2-3 libraries, big recreation center, wifi available throughout the campus, opportunity to play many sports
- Likes:
- High Ranking, Good course curriculum, Great Alumni network.,
- Huge campus and great work opportunities. Faculty is also nice and approachable so that's a good part.
- Dislikes:
- High cost of living, since the campus is near Washington DC. Diversity is less, more than 60% of students are Indian so that is problematic.
Overview:
My overall experience has been delightful. Academics is good, campus is great, college life is fun. It is a good experience for me so far.
Fees:

- Because it has an amazing CS program and has a great location.,
- Everything over here is amazing, from the food to the people, but the best thing is the academics. I really like how professors are so friendly and easy to approach.
- Dislikes:
- I don't dislike anything in particular about my college, but the one thing that could use some improvement is the construction that takes place around campus. There's always some kind of construction going on around campus which can get annoying at times.
Overview:
My college experience has been amazing so far! I have made a ton of friends, and I have had a lot of fun in the 5 months that I have been here. I have also learned a lot of stuff and successfully applied them in various fields.
Fees:

- Location, Fees, Courses, Faculty, Internship/Co-Op/Assistantship/FTE opportunities.,
- 1) Flexibility with courses- The course structure is designed in a way that allows you to also take courses from other schools like the CS School/Business School, Engineering School and more without impacting your fee structure 2) Faculty support - You get all the support you need to plan your curriculum the way that fits best with your schedule. The professors are amazing and are always available to help and mentor 3) Career Fair Programs- UMCP offers a lot of career fair opportunities and also provides students with scholarships to attend conferences like Grace Hopper 4) Assistantship opportunities- You will be given multiple chances throughout your program for paid assistantships that offer a stipend which covers your fees and living expenses. With the iSchool you are eligible to get 100% tuition remission 5) Low tuition fee, Minimal living expense, Surrounded around prime locations like Washington DC, Virginia, New York, New Jersey allowing for extended possibility to re-locate if needed for better job opportunities.
- Dislikes:
- The courses can be a little more technical and cover more advanced concepts like Cloud Computing and System Design, Pipeline Management. Adding these topics in their courses will help the students to actually gain skills that are more relevant to their actual work once if their domain is Data oriented. However, with the MIM Program at iSchool where I studied, I had the flexibility to easily learn these concepts from other schools like the prestine Iribe School for CS.
Overview:
The overall experience was very good for me and my peers as all of us had assistantships with 100% tuition remission. This helped me to complete my Master's degree in just 20,000 USD and I received a stipend of 10,000 USD per semester.
Fees:
14000 USD

- The Robotics program at UMD is one of the top in the US. The fees was also major factor in the decision to study at UMD. The faculty is very good as well as the choice of courses is very appropriate and in accordance with the industry standards.,
- The University has a very reasonable tuition fee for MEngg programs considering it is also know as a “public ivy” because of its rank and reputation. The campus resources are abundant and free to use, ensuring a very active and good work life balance. The Engineering departments in particular have some of the most advanced labs and resources that might not be the case with some of the other universities in the area.
- Dislikes:
- The diversity in some of the programs is quite less. There are many South Asian students in Engineering programs so does not feel like an international program. The nearby areas like Baltimore are notorious for a high crime rate so a precautions are needed if you are going there.
Overview:
My overall experience for UMD has been very pleasant, I am able to find some balance in the work-life balance and I am positive that this degree from UMD would be life-changing for me. The academics are very rigorous but there are plenty of resources to support your endeavor.
Fees:
The tuition fee is approximately $1065 per credit hour and you need to complete 30 credit hours for the degree so comes roughly to $35000 for the applied engineering department degrees. Apart from this if you are a graduate student you will be probably spending 900 - 1000 USD per month for living expenses.
- Likes:
- Less fees, one of the top universities, good faculties, not so bad whether, good location.,
- The practical way of teaching all courses. All faculties are highly educated and knowledgeable. Also, the assignments are very practical and very helpful. This university is one of the top institutes in USA. Apart from studies also, we get a lot to do. Events keep happening throughout the year.
- Dislikes:
- We get Too many assignments but they might be common in all universities. Some faculties have a very strict grading system. So, it is not very easy to score good. Some courses are competitive to go get into and charge high fees. Mine is not like that
Overview:
Everything is super amazing in terms of university. Love all the events, especially the football and soccer games which are a huge thing here in USA.
Fees:
35000 USD
