What Students Say
Likes
- The opportunity for research work in the desired field is very high, especially in case of Computer science we are provided with high compute infrastructure to perform the projects
- The awareness of students from the first year about the evolving job market and preparing according to it, keeps the atmosphere competitive
- Very nice career fair with upto 80 companies coming for Computer fair for one day and upto 300 companies for all major over span of 3 days, career fair happens once for each semester
Dislikes
- For international students there are limited part-times and very hard to get one
- some of the majors are crowded with 150 to 200 people per program in the masters degree
- The opportunity to get TA is very limited and restricted within in the home departments, unless you have a good contact with a professor and very good grades they cannot consider people outside of the program
Course Curriculum
- The course level of medium difficulty if you done an relevant subject in your undergrad i would just be an application related things of the concepts taught to us in the undergrad, the batch was diversed in terms of colleges and work experiences, most of the classes are schedules in the evening from 6 to 9 so as to support any students taking this course asides their current job.
Admission Experience
- I applied to ASU data science(accepted), Northeastern data science (accepted),NYU data sc ience(accepted), University of washington data science(rejected), University of Maryland college park applied machine learning(accepted), i believe that my reason for rejection for university of washington is strong applicant pool, when i visited their website for the part admission demographics it displayed that more than 55% of them had 8 years or more work experience inspite of having good academics ,internships and research work there is no way i can beat the 8 or more years of work experience that too at FAANG settings. For anyone aiming for a top school check for their previous year admission to get the idea of the people they take in, or else you will be wasting your money, time, and effort on something not required.
-
From the colleges I have been selected, I chose UMD because of many reasons, they are:
- less cost of living and tuition fee compared to other admissions, and brand value of UMD, like being named as public ivy in the forbes list and excellent for CS
- I first took my standard tests (IELTS; I did not take the GRE as it was optional) and then submitted my test scores and SOP and LOR's. I got my decision in 3 weeks when I applied at the end of February 2024.
- It accepts IELTS, GRE, TOFEL, etc. for IELTS, the overall cut-off is 6.5, with subsections above 7 and speaking above 6.5, If any section is higher than the cutoff, you will be given a conditional admit where you can resubmit new test scores to waive the conditional admit
- The admission was very challenging and tiresome, with so much uncertainty of being accepted or rejected into our dream schools. For anyone applying for this season, if any of the schools state GRE is optional, take it seriously and submit, as this makes a huge difference in the application.
- I applied for fall 2024; I decided for fall 2024 as my graduation was in spring 2024 and I decided to pursue masters continuously after my undergrad. The admission took 3 weeks after submission of all my test scores and lor's and sop. I applied around the last week of February for my program and I got my admit around the third week of March. I accepted it instantly
Faculty
- The student faculty ratio is very good , i do not the exact ratio but if the class strength is huge they will assign the required Teaching assistants accordingly, the teaching methodology differs from subject to subject if it is more theory related we would be required to take down the notes and submit the assignments, if it is application oriented we are required to complete biweekly projects.
Campus Life
- My campus has many colleges, some of them colleges of computer science and natural mathematics, the Robert H. Smith School of Business, the Academy, the James Clark School of Engineering, and the School of Public Health. We have a diverse set of clubs and extracurricular activities and many sports events are conducted every week. The sports are mainly focused on football and basketball.
Part Time Jobs
- Teaching assistantships are very much limited to the same school; the chance of considering outside the school is very less. For a research assistant, one needs to reach out to the professor individually and convey their interest and based on the professor's funding and the person's background, one may be approved for RA. The typical pay for TA is 30 dollars per hour with up to 9 credits waived off for that semester.
- The typical pay for part-time jobs is from 15 to 17 dollars per hour. We have part-time jobs in libraries, dining, stamp student unions, and the electronics department. One needs to reach out directly to the hiring manager to express their interest. Some of the jobs require applicants to apply online and getting selected can be a matter of luck if we know any seniors before hand working at our desired locations; they can refer us for this role.
Placement
- The full-time opportunities vary from major to major. In the case of computer science, a recent survey found that approximately 88% of CS undergrads have done at least one paid internship and approximately 90% of the have a full-time job within 6 months of graduation. We also have a career fair for each semester; companies like Google, Amazon, Bloomberg, etc. visit this fair.
Accommodation
- I am currently living off-campus in an independent house with my friends from my undergrad; we had found the house through our existing seniors. The campus also provides many sources to search for off-campus, which are not limited to apartments and other places. Typically, when signing for accommodation, we are expected to sign a one-year lease and pay the first month rent as a security deposit.
Exams
- My admission required submission of either IELTS or Tofel and GRE was optional; it required 3 lors from the professors or the persons who can vouch for our work. It required a SOP, and for writing, they asked to state at least a professor from UMD under whom I want to work and their research work.
Fees
- For my program the fee structure for two years is 40,000$ and insurance for every semester is around 1000$, other required fees for each semester is around 640$, my monthly expense for rent is 550$ and for food and travel and phone bill comes to be around 200-250$, me rent amount covers all other expenses like gas, electricity, wifi and all other stuff.
Scholarship
- There are no scholarships provided for my program , but they highly vary from program to program with some getting a scholarship at the admission based on their profile and past works One of senior in the Masters of Business analytics received a scholarship of 5000$ at the time of admission this distributed evenly for the course of study. The other form of financial aid are getting a graduate assistant ship and they are extremely competitive to get
