NITK: The college for the best

Dislikes

  • The evaluation is continuous, which makes the student hard to focus on extra curricular activities.
  • In semesters, the college is working even on saturdays, to avoid the stay here when there is water scarcity. Accelerating the semester makes it hard to catch up

Course Curriculum Overview :

The curriculum for Computational and Data Science consist of Linear Algebra, Computer Networking and Security, Machine Learning, Data Structures and Algorithm, Discrete Mathematics, Image processing and more. SInce this course is new to the college, they are still deciding what is needed to be taught for a person to excel in data science field. There are regular meeting among the student and faculty and students can give their feedback on what they liked and did not like about the courses taken. This ensures that there is improvement in teaching. The semesters are July-December and January- April. There are exams each month based on the teahcer's preference. The exams are alternatively difficult

Placement Experience :

Students become eligible for campus placements by the start of the 7th semester, and the internships by the 5th semester. Since Mangalore has many MNCs, most of the campus drives start with those companies. We have an average package of 18LPA and it varies according to each branch of engineering. Mostly all the computer science-related branches have 23LPA as their average and the core branches have 14LPA. Almost 95 per cent of the students get placed. The highest package has even crossed 50LPA.

Fees and Financial Aid :

The average fee per year is about 1400000, including the hostel and mess fees, whereas the institute fees alone is about 80000 per year. This increases every year according to the regulations. For students whose annual income of the family is less than 1 lakh, the tuition fees is waived off and for students with an annual income less than 3 lakh, the tuition fees is halved. Students with reservations such as OBC, SC/ST have their complete tuition fees waivered off.

Campus Life :

My college life so far has been a roller coaster ride. We have two fest, the technical fest called Engineer is held in October, and the cultural fest , Incident is held in January. We have two libraries, Central and E. E library is used mostly for reading research papers and using laptops for self studies whereas central includes books ranging from journals, books for each engineering departments, software develpoment books, math, technical books, books for SC/STs and books for competitive exams. There are vaailable any time and for 2 weeks, which can be renewed to avoid carriage fees. We have clubs for evry extracurricular field: dance, music, robotics, fashion, drama, literary, debate and also technical clubs like: ISTE , IEEE, ACM, IE, IET. Sports like Kabaddi, football, basketball, handball, volleyball, badminton, TT, chess, swimming, throwball, lawn tennis also have clubs and recruit every year.

Hostel Facilities :

The hostel experience for a female student in NITK is quite good. We have hostels that we change every year, and we have two messes: non veg and veg. We can change our mess if we want to any month by filling a form which is released by hostel office. The food quality is better compared to any engineering college mess and frequent feedbacks are taken and consodered. The registeration of hostel is donr uder IRIS, the personal app for all NITK students and every hotel has rent of around 7000 every semester. The mess fess costs around 30000 every semester. This is quite affordable and reasonable considering the food they give. You can cut you mess any time by giving a letter to hostel office. The room includes bed, almirah, shelf, table and chair. It is a two sharing hostel every year exceot 4th, 4th year has single room accomodation.

Admission :

National Institiute of Technology Karnataka is ranked among the best engineering college in the country. They are offering best possible courses for a person to excel in the field of engineering. Being a Tier-I college, this college provides many more facilities than any average college. Interests in extracurricular activities can also be honed here. With high achieving faculties. there is always motivation to become better and achieve more. I had written JEE-Advanced too , but did not opt going into Tier-III IIT because of the reputation and status NITK has. The admission in NITK is done through JoSAA councelling, which needs high ranking in JEE Mains for admisssion.

Faculty :

The student-to-faculty ratio here depends on the department. For the math department, the student-to-faculty ratio about 1 is to 10, wheres it is 1:20 on average around the campus. The faculty are very approachable, and they ensure that a spark is ignited in the mind of the student regarding that subject. They are very highly successful, graduating from top universities like IITs and Stanford, and publish their research papers regularly. There are 4 exams per semester, and exams are moderate.

Night Life :

All the girl's hostel in one block: Girl's block. We have gym and a personal gym for the girls in the girl's block. The common gym has a personal trainer and can be accessed till 9pm whereas the girl's gym can be accessed anytime. In the morning we have Food court, Nescafe and Suprabha cafe for food and hangout and at night night canteen is open too. Food court is strictly vegetarian, whereas in night canteen we have non veg food too. Girl's block has 1 am curfew for UG programmes and no block timings for PG students, The boys hostel is scattered with each block for each year and they have linient block timings. The campus has gate timings which is 11pm for UG and no block timings for PGs. Famous hangout places include Nescafe and Suprabha. We also have a beach which is mostly visited. The campus is completely safe to roam around as tehre is strict patrolling. The locality seems safe and friendly too.

Placement Experience:

Last year due to recession the placements were low comparatively. From semester 7 onwards we are eligible for campus placements. I do not exactly have the correct statistics, but all the students who tried outside got the jobs easily. Highest package 32 lacks and least goes upto 3 lacks per annum. Last yearpercentage of students placed is 66 and before that it was more than 90 My plan is to get a good job, after the degree and if I cannot get a good job then I will go for higher studies abroad.

Course Curriculum Overview:

As the computer science was booming and also beeing an aspiring student towards that field I had decided to do CSE. The curriculum is was less practical towards the real world applications. They should have include industry professionals to teach they would have better knowledge and experience. Every one we used to have exam like mid term , FA, and end terms. Difficulty depends upon prepration level done by student.

Placement Experience:

They are eligible for placements after 4th semester and the placements are average, a lot of companies have visited I can't say them all ex like Infosys, TCS , and a lot of American and Taiwanese companies, the highest place ment in this campus was around 28lpa and average is around 1L and the percentage of students getting placements are below average like every other college cause this mostly depends on you and not the college its all based on your skill set. My plans are to get a job with a good lpa and I'm confident about that because I have a good skillset which would benefit the companies.

Placement Experience:

If talking about the placement placements are good companies like Wipro or Amazon and many other companies will visit the campus but the ratio of selection is less. So little bit hard work is required or else around 60 to 70%. Students are placed from my college in every year.
