Remarks :
Pros: Good faculty, Good internet, Advance labs, Huge library, Lot of opportunities (100+companies for placement), International exposure through DAAD internship, Big grounds, swimming pool, basket ball court, volleyball court, kho-kho ground. Lot of cultural events. Cons: mess food is awful and overpriced, mess and canteens are run by same contractor, local students gets unfair advantages from faculty.
Entrance Preview :
AIEEE was the exam I gave. I scored 213 in that and rank was 7708 AIR. I opted NITK because its top ranked NIT, good facilities, professor and only college with its own beach.
Course Curriculum Overview :
For B tech course, it was good enough. I had basic and advance computer courses like data structure and advance data structure, networking and advance network protection etc. To cover the current edge technologies NITK IT department also introduced web services and machine learning.
Internships Opportunities :
Yes, stipend is Rs 150 per day. College will provide the free accommodation in college hostels. Stipend covers the food and other basic requirements. One faculty will be assigned as mentor to the intern and department lab can be used for research purpose.
Placement Experience :
Placement for IT and CS is very good in NITK. 100+companies visited my college in 2015. I will mention few big names here: For IT(Information Technology) 90 student got palced out of 105. Microsoft- 17LPA, Amazon- 23LPA, Myntra- 18LPA, D.E. Shaw - 20LPA, Intuit- 16 LPA, Flipkart- 15LPA, Snapdela- 15LPA, Oracle- 12LPA, 9LPA, 6LPA, CitiCorp- 15LPA, Sandvine- 10LPA, Morgan Stanley- 15LPA.
College Events :
NITK has 3 major fests: Engineer- Tech Fest. 5 day long, Incident- Cultural fest (biggest fest of South India after IIT-M)- 5 day long, Crescendo- Cultural fest- 3 day long, Razzmatazz- Cultural fest- 1 day long. Other then that other small 1 day fest keep happening which makes NITK a fun place to study.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
In 2015, Tuition Fee- 22000 for 1 semester, Mess Fee- 15000 for 1 semester current fee is increased by GOI and I am not sure about the numbers. So for me, it was feasible and I was also doing part time job in Surathkal (nearest town) which covered most of my expenses other than academic fee.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
There are very few of them: Merit scholarship for top 5 student every year on bases of JEE mains result. Merit-cum-means scholarship for top 50 students on basis of JEE mains result and parents income <4.5 LPA. There are some private scholarships awarded by reliance group.
Campus Life :
NITK is only college with its own private beach. Its a fun place to be. Lot of extracurricular activities are there to be part of gender ratio is bit tilted on male side but its easy to find people from diverse culture and places from all over the India. Big play grounds, 24*7 open library, advanced computer labs makes life easy. Few clubs which are proactive and fun are: Music club, IEEE club, CSE club, Robotics club, Star gazing club, Web club, Hindi sahitya club, Photography club.
Hostel Facilities :
Hostel- 4/5, in first year it was 2 sharing but spacious room. In 2nd year, few hostels are sharing and other few are single rooms. In 3rd yr, single room, new building, with lift facility. In 4th yr, single room, new building, with lift facility. Hostels were equipped with internet facility. Water and power were available most of the time. Mess- 2/5. Food was not good and overpriced. Canteens and mess was run by same contractor so it becomes obvious that one cant get good food in mess and have to spend money in canteens.
Alumni/Alumna :
NITK has a huge alumni network. Its easy to find NITK alumni in big companies of all the major fields. NITK conduct alumni meet every year to make this network bigger and to get help for students pursuing there degrees. Yes the alumni are helpful. They help in making placements and internships season successful. One of the reason for high number of placements is alumni network.
Exam Structure :
Exams were quite frequent, which will help student in all ways. Labs were there for 3 days out of 5 so it was not that hectic and these LABS are very important as it helps in understanding the real use case of the technology which we learn in the class room. So for 3 days classes and lab would be for 8 hours and rest 2 days it would just 5 hours.
Faculty :
IT department has 2 senior professors and 5 assistant professor. Professors have there specialization in fields like networking, machine learning, web services, advance data structures and intrusion-detection. Faculty is reach oriented and motivate students to publish papers. They are helpful and very approachable.
