3 year review of NITK

Dislikes

  • Faculty teaching you is often very boring and ultimately you are the one who will need to study yourself to get good grades
  • The racism and politcs is quite bad. Not that bad as to why you should not choose this college

Course Curriculum Overview :

I opted for this branch as it has the highest opportunity in the government sector. The curriculum is honestly good especially labs which teaches you how to deal with the various civil engineering equipments. We had labs like hydraulic lab, soil mechanics lab, geotech lab, strength of materials lab surveying lab, transportation lab, environment engineering lab. Which really helped me to learn civil engineering hands on. Every week we had atleast 2 labs of different subjects. Where first the teachere explained us the theoritical part of the experiment ( how, why and when) performed 1 trial by themselves and we were split into groups and each group then performed experiments separately. There were always assistants present to help us out in understanding how the various equipments worked. We didn't have quizzes and midsems for it but every week we were supposed to submit the fair record of whatever we did in the previous lab for which we were given marks. But the equipments were very old

Internships Opportunities :

As I am aspiring for a goverment job I don't really know much about the internships and placements happening. One thing that I know is that the students that got interships after the covid batch has significantly reduced.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

I am not really the person who can answer such questions. Making up things and misguiding people is not my intention. Around 8-10 lacs are required to complete btech in Nit Surathkal. The hikes in fees as per my knowledge happens once in a bluemoon. There are various scholarships avalaible for PWD and EWS category of students

Campus Life :

Here is my major dislike about the campus. Social life here I would say is good although you are going to face a lot of casual racism in the name of dank humour , you'll have to get accustomed to it if you want to do well socially which unfortunately I never could. We have a lots of clubs catering to the various aspects of students life. Clubs regularly conduct meetings and events and students enthusiastically participate in them. Various clubs are Uthkrishtha Bharat, Hindi evam Sanskrit Club, racing club, iest (for students interested in development), NCC and NSS etc. In short there are lots of things to do. Sports facilites are actually really good, there are two sports complexes(old and new sports complex) which has top notch badminton, table tennis and kabaddi cours. Interdepartmental cups, freshers cup, Inter NITs are regularly conducted.

Admission :

As my college is an Nit the admission procedure was pretty standard just like every other NIT. I took admission through Josaa by scoring 98.54 percentile in JEE mains. I could have gotten branches like Chemical but I didn't opt for them as I wished to pursue government jobs (as civil engineers have the best chances of securing a government job) I personally didn't find any difficulty in the admission process. It seemed quite seemless although other people might have had different experiences (not that I know of)

Placement Experience:

Campus placements are good. From 3 rd year, students are eligible to sit in the placements. Most IT companies visit the college like Accenture, TCS, Amazon, cognizant, etc. Few core companies also came like Texas instruments, kpit, global foundries, Bosch, etc. The average package is 4.5 LPA and the highest is 22 LPA for my branch. 60% of people in my department got placement.

In the final year, students can sit for placements. There were many IT companies like Capgemini, Mindtree, EY, EXL, Epsilon, etc. For mechanical only 3 companies they are L&T, Quest global, Apex auto. Placements were good for CS/IS branches.

Placement Experience:

Students are eligible for placements from the final year. A few companies visited when I was studying about 12-15 MNCs companies visited all were product-based and I think the highest package was 7.5 LPA. As the Corona pandemic started college was closed and companies didn't visit afterward. There is less number of companies visiting our college all are looking more for Cs graduates less or no EC core companies visit. I am planning to pursue M tech

Remarks:

It is positive. Candidates appearing in the 12th exams in 2019 can apply. Diploma candidates can also apply but only for admission in IITs. There is no minimum mark required to apply for JEE Main. Candidates have to secure 75% (65% for SC/ST) in 12th exams or be in top 20 percentile of the respective board.
