Course Curriculum Overview :
I chose Metallurgy mainly because it['s the oldest department yet there's a lot of scope for research and development as steel consumption is continuously growing. At IIT Kharagpur, For the metallurgy department we have faculty: student ratio of around 1:5. All the professors are highly qualified with PhDs in well-renowned institutions. If we attend all the classes regularly, we can easily score 80-90% on the exams
Internships Opportunities :
IIT Kharagpur does offer internship opportunities just like the placements. I had my compulsory internship at Legato Health Technologies, Hyderabad. The average stipend offered is around INR 40,000 per month while the highest is INR 4,00,000 per month offered to the students. The projects are mainly on the development of algorithms, data science and finance
Placement Experience :
Students in their final year (penultimate semester) become eligible for campus placements. So far over 400+ companies have visited us this year offering 1000+ placements. The highest package is around INR 2 crores while the average is INR 15LPA. Almost everyone (90%) got placed in the placements whereas I am planning to pursue MBA after my graduation
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
The semester tuition fee is around INR 1,50,000 for which I have availed of a student loan from the State Bank of India and a lot of banks do offer financial aid by providing education loans to the students which can be repaid after graduation. There are also many scholarships namely HCM Scholarship available especially for students whose family income is lower
Campus Life :
We have 2 major annual fests namely Spring Fest (Cultural Fest) and Kshitij (techno-management fest) which are conducted in the month of January. Our library is Asia's largest library with almost every book or journal required by the students. Amenities of classrooms and sports facilities are the best and one can take maximum benefit out of them. There are also various clubs or societies where students can pursue their passions such as singing, dancing, debating, and dramatics. etc
Hostel Facilities :
At IIT Kharagpur, Different hostels provide different facilities while the hostel in which I stay (Rajendra prasad hall of Residence) provides triple sharing in the first 2 years and single sharing later on. Mess quality is manageable of course can't be compared with home food but is good and hygienic. We automatically get allotted a hostel as there's no provision to stay outside in PGs and hence it['s mandatory for every student to pay hostel fees which are around INR 50,000 per year (2 semesters)
Admission :
The admission process to get into IITs is pretty clear and simpler. A candidate has to give JEE Mains followed by JEE Advanced which is only for those who had cleared Mains. Based on the marks secured by the candidate in JEE Advanced, Ranks shall be allotted based on which IITs shall be allotted. Application details can be found on the official website of JOSAA. I being an OBC candidate availed the reservation in JEE Advanced whose only advantage would be slightly lower cutoff.
