Remarks :
Food quality needs improvements.Compared to IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur,our food is little bit inferior.The food is having local state influence,which never happened in other IITs.It should be taken care.
Entrance Preview :
I had passed the GATE Exam and had all India Rank of 982.I had taken admission in MTech before coming to IIT Kharagpur.The old score was useful here.
Internships Opportunities :
Indian Oil , stipend 5000 p.m. Haldia Oil Refinery , stipend 6000 p.m. Durgapur Steel Plant,stipend 4000 p.m. Coal India,stipend 5000 p.m. Volvo India,stipend 8000 p.m.
Placement Experience :
Most of the mining engg. students were selected in Coal India Ltd. Some of were selected in Vedanta(BALCO). Some were in Volvo India. Some in JCB. The salary during training ranged from Rs 35,000 p.m. to 55,000 p.m. Some were selected in software industries with a package of 6 Lakhs p.a. to 9 Lakhs p.a. .
College Events :
1.Welcome for the freshers. 2.Independence Day. 3.Teacher's Day. 4.Vishwakarma Puja. 5.Ganesha Puja. 6.Technical Festival. 7.Spring Festival. 8.Saraswati Puja. 9.Research Scholars' Day. 10.Republic Day. 11.Farewell Function. 12.Annual Conference etc. We enjoyed a lot in these functions.Lots of participants come from outside to take part in some events.We had departmental interactions with professors,industrial people etc so that, we get lots of benefits.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
Fee structure is normal here. Since, it is a Central Government Institute, we are not supposed to pay any kind of donations or college development fee etc. All the charges are subsidized and at nominal rates. Compared to the private universities of India, we are paying the college fees at about 80 % cheaper. Lots of funds are available for the students and professors for the proper utilization.We students can go abroad with institute funding, if selected.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
All the students who are studying MTech. or PhD or MS are getting stipend.The amount is fixed by the Government of India and there is no deduction.Since, the B.Tech. students don't have stipend, some depend on the study loan. The State Bank of India is having a branch in our Institute Campus,which offers study loans to all the students.
Campus Life :
We are having lots of extra curricular activities like Sports,Cycling,Adventure Programs like Hill Climbing,Trekking etc. We have also singing,dancing,drama,model making competitions,blood donation camps,food festivals etc. All the events are very energetic.
Hostel Facilities :
Hostel facilities are very good here.We have 24 hours of water supply,internet supply as well as no power cut any time.This is the best condition to study and do research. Our hostel rooms are single-seated with well furnished items. The students who are staying in quarters are also having good facilities. Those who are living outside the campus,are getting homes at cheaper prices.
Alumni/Alumna :
We have a very strong alumni network in IIT Kharagpur. The alumni are spread all over the world. We have an alumni hall in the Institute Main Building and we get lots of Gift Items from there. The alumni are interacting with the professors of the respective departments and who ever student goes abroad,the alumni take care of him/her and help a lot.
Exam Structure :
In a semester, we have two exams for each subject. First is the Mid-Semester Exam, after 45 days completion of course. Next is the End-Semester Exam,which is at the end of semester. Mid-exams carry 30 % value + 20% for class attendance + 50% for the end semester exams. Below 40 % marks is considered as Fail.
Admission :
I had applied for the Doctoral Degree Course in Mining Engineering through QIP Scheme.First I had filled up the form online,took the printout and sent them to here.In IIT Kharagpur, I was short-listed and called for an interview.I had appeared for the interview and with the career markings and extra curricular activities,I was selected here.
Faculty :
In our department of Mining Engineering of IIT Kharagpur, most of the Professors are foreign qualified.Thus, their experience are world class.They are also looking for the most recent technologies and inform their students to apply the same in the labs.Thus, the students don't face problems when they go to the foreign laboratories.
