Remarks :
IIT Ropar was ranked second in the World-university ranking and first in quality of research by the QS India rankings in the year 2020. Known for its dynamic student life, this college was one of my first preferences to study computer science. I began my admission procedure by filling out the online application form. It is required to fill in details like SSC and HSC scores, JEE (Main) Scores. The application fee was Rs 500. The closing rank for computer science and engineering is 1943 for males and 4066 for females in the open category, since my rank was 1852, I easily secured my position for the shortlisting. The next round was the group discussion and personal interview. The group discussion consisted of topics centering on the emerging computing languages and their impact on the economy. I talked about the coding programmes like python and javascript that help in web development and how can they change the way we perceive websites and software. In the third round of personal interviews, I was asked some aptitude-based questions, extracurriculars, and current affairs in the field of information technology.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course curriculum was a bit lengthy. In the fresher year, we were taught all the basic topics covered in all fields of engineering, and from the next, i.e the sophomore year, we were taught subjects specializing in our field. This specialized curriculum involved topics like computer programming, information science, networking, operating systems, artificial intelligence, theory, logic & design, multimedia, etc. After the completion of topics, quizzes were conducted in 2 rounds. This helped to cope with the lengthy curriculum in an interesting manner. Apart from this, the faculty teaching here is extremely experienced and almost everyone holds a Ph.D. in their field. The faculty-student ratio stands at a decent amount of 15:1.
Placement Experience :
IIT Ropar has a consistent average of 90% of students placed throughout the decade. Some of the major recruiters visiting the campus were Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Paypal, Arista Networks, Texas Instruments, Larson and Toubro, Steelwedge, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motors, Coal India, Click Labs, etc. Because of the placements and the quality of batch that IIT Ropar produces, it was even ranked as the 9th best engineering institute by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. In major MNCs, candidates having a previous project or internship experience are preferred over fresher candidates. Hence, I would recommend taking up summer internships or building software as a project to level up the chances of interviews. Highest CTC offered was 12 lakh per annum while the average CTC stands at 12lakh per annum.
Campus Life :
IIT Ropar has an amazing campus with a heritage theme inspired by the Indus valley civilization. It is fully equipped with all sorts of facilities and amenities for the residing students. It has sports parks like cricket and football field, a tennis court, a gymnasium, two volleyball courts, a basketball court, and many more facilities promoting health and fitness. The library has books on all technical matters and other genres. Apart from that, students with library members can access e-journals and periodicals and also the databases of economy, industry, and politics. The student network is excellent and gives a lot of opportunities to brainstorm together and generate ideas. We even had a lot of socio-economic and cultural fests. The last event of IIT Ropar was the 7th EAST Asian Conference on ALgebraic topology.
