Remarks :
Don't go there if you are a north indian student (specially WB). If you really want to do research stay in university of calcutta and study hard. Most of the students after B.Sc leave it but still no. of students from the university of calcutta secured a
Entrance Preview :
I wanted to my M.Sc in physics from IITs. So, I opt for IIT-JAM exam and ranked 119. I took admission to this institute through counselling because of it's department.
Course Curriculum Overview :
Overall, course structure was good. There were several options for electives like Classical Field theory, Condensed matter 2, Atomic and molecular physics, quantum information, advanced statistical mechanics, mathematical methods 2 etc.
Internships Opportunities :
I did a project under prof. M. V. Satyanarayana. It was a good experience. No. of fellowships available were too less than what is required. Amount is also not sufficient.
Placement Experience :
In general students from MSc background don't opt for campus placements. There were around 40 students but only 2-3 students opted for jobs. Our main motivation were to appear for NET, GATE , JEST etc. Although, many students ultimately were able to crack these exams and got chance to do research in various institutes in the country and abroad, but not immediately.
College Events :
Several events like SAARANG, HOSTEL night are organized in IITM. SAARANG is the institute fest and Hostel night is celebrated once in a year in each hostel separately. Holi is also a main attraction in IIT madras.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
Not at all feasible. Highly expensive. Personally, I believe that administrative section was involved in fraud. Only, a proper inquiry should be done immediately.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Almost any bank will offer loan to study there. Money is not an issue once you get a good rank. Personally, I did not avail and bank loan.
Campus Life :
It's okay. I personally had no real issue with anything. But there were few faculties (mainly old generation, I suppose), who were probably racist and often had to listen racist comments. Most of the students were from west bengal (which is common in any IIT, M.Sc course).
Hostel Facilities :
Worst! As a north indian non-vegetarian student, I had worst experience there. I'm now a PhD student at HRI, which is considered as one of the best institute in india. I joined here in 2011, immediately after MSc. I lost around 12 kgs during those 2 years
Alumni/Alumna :
I have no connection with alumni association. I don't even want to make any connection with them. As you already know what it did with me, I just want to forget it. I have connection with all my batch mates.
Exam Structure :
Exams and labs were very frequent and hectic for most of us. 3 hrs lab, 4 days a week was not an easy job and most importantly there were several faculties who use to take surprise tests.
Faculty :
Department had a no of renowned faculties like prof. V. Balakrishnan, Prof. Suresh Govindarajan, Prof. Arul Lakshminarayan.
