The peer pool of IIM Ahmedabad varies from that of other B-schools like SP Jain, FMS, and NMIMS because of the admission criteria and quality of intake. The majority of the IIM Ahmedabad batch comprises performing students with CAT percentile almost touching 100 percentile. and most of them got close to the 100 percentile in CAT and they get opportunities to study business studies in IIM A, B, and C. Very few students get into IIMs through the process of diversification only if they scored more than 80 percent grade in Xth, XII th and Graduate Examinations. The other B schools like SP Jain, FMS, NMIMS, or JB don’t have such strict criteria and the peer pool comprises students from diverse academic profiles rather than just top CAT rankers.

This is the major point of difference between the two kinds of B Schools. As a result of this, IIM Ahmedabad students are offered better placement opportunities at the global level than these average B-schools.

MBA from SVKM's NMIMS (Graduated 2016)

Students at IIM-A are similar to those at SP Jain, NMIMS, FMS, and JBIMS. Aptitude and intelligence are roughly comparable. IIM-A students do not have to compete as hard for placements, so they are less concerned, whereas students from other colleges are constantly concerned about placements.

You'll notice that students from other colleges perform better in competitions than IIM-A because they are generally more hardworking during MBA because the struggle is greater for them. However, because of the brand name, IIM-A students receive far more exposure than students from any other college in India, which benefits students greatly in their personal development.

Although each one of these institutes is a quite prestigious business school in India, IIM Ahmedabad is a legacy. That’s right, there is no reason to defame other colleges but have a look at some insights to know why IIM A students stand apart from most top b-schools.

  • If you ask yourself a question why this person is in FMS and not IIM-A? Maybe because he didn’t get a call? And why so? Most likely because he couldn’t make it as he couldn’t solve those extra 4-5 questions. Thus, in the first phase itself, the IIM A guy accurately hits 4–5 questions more than individuals who end up in other institutes.
  • The other factors are quite simple to understand. IIM A offers better placements owing to the better brand name of the institute which would lead to better roles which in turn would lead to a jump start of career with better remuneration.
  • Some differences are also perception-based. Here’s how:

JP Morgan is known to offer front-end roles at only IIM-A/B/C. Similarly, McKinsey and Co. are also known to visit only A/B/C for exclusive campus recruitment.

All in all, IIM-A students are not much different from students of SP Jain, NMIMS, FMS, or JBIMS. Aptitude level and intelligence can be much more or less similar. However, what makes IIM A students lucky is they don't have to struggle much for placements. In addition, IIM-A students get better recognition worldwide which helps in overall personality development.
