Which should I choose: IIT Madras for metallurgy over NIT Trichy for computer science and engineering?

If you're trying to decide what to study at university, it can be overwhelming. You should consider CSE at NIT Trichy, instead of going to IIT Madras for metallurgy. Here are some reasons why you should choose computer science engineering:

Don't choose a branch just for the sake of a tag: You may feel pressure to choose a certain branch of study because of the prestige associated with it, but this can be a mistake. Instead, consider your long-term career goals and what will be most beneficial to you in achieving them.
Don't risk your career for a tag: Going for a branch just because it's considered prestigious, even if it's not the best fit for you, can be a big risk. Your career is important and you should choose something that will set you up for success in the future.
Topping the class doesn't guarantee certainty: If you're certain you want to change your branch and you're confident you'll be able to top your class at IIT Madras, you may be considering metallurgical engineering. However, there's always a risk that you won't be able to achieve that top spot. If that happens, you'll be stuck with a degree that may not be as useful for your career goals.

CSE at NIT Trichy (2020)

Before attempting to choose between IIT Madras and NIT Trichy, go through the following points.

Metallurgy and Material Science at IIT, Madras:

You should only opt for Metallurgy and Material Science if you can learn it for 4 years.
Now, the median salary of IIT Madras is about 14 LPA to 15 LPA which is somewhat very similar to other branches of the institute, such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and civil engineering.
Metallurgy students, more often prefer non-core jobs that mostly include finance, analytics, software (IT), consulting, and management because these job roles generally provide salaries.
The IIT brand value is highly beneficial.

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) NIT, Trichy:

Students usually obtain higher packages after pursuing courses in CS and AI.

At NIT Trichy, students of the CSE branch receive packages that range from INR 17 LPA to 20 LPA. While the highest package stood at INR 40 LPA.
If you however want to opt particularly for CSE, then going to NIT Trichy will supposedly be the best choice. It is because CSE generally brings a good initial package.
Pursuing it will rather reap the benefits of going for higher studies in CS.

So, choose wisely.
