Yes, one can definitely choose SPJIMR over the three IIMs IKL. To answer the why part, I have individually compared each IIM to SPJIMR and justified why SPJIMR is a better choice in all the 3 cases.
IIM Indore
SPJIMR over IIM Indore is a choice as everyone is aware of the huge batch size at IIM Indore which becomes a major obstacle during placements. Moreover, it gives a lot of weightage to past academics so it’s not a good option for those who fared average during 10 and 12 but are now ready to face challenges.
IIM Kozhikode
The only aspect in which Kozhikode has an upper hand when compared to SPJIMR is the campus beauty and I am sure this is not the most important criterion for judging a college at all. SPJIMR offers a more innovative and structured curriculum, a smaller batch size combined with the chance to live in the city of Dreams. The only aspect that it lacks in comparison to Kozhikode is the fact that you have to choose your specialization during admission itself whereas Kozhikode gives you a year's time to do so. Then again if you are certain of your specialization, nothing is better than SPJIMR.
IIM Lucknow
Honestly speaking many might consider IIM Lucknow a tad bit better than SPJIMR and rightly so. When it comes to consulting and Finance, IIM Lucknow is a better option. It also attracts the best profile and not the kind accepted at SPJIMR. Additionally, the batch comprises IITians majorly who are there for the tag. These geniuses create tough competition which is lacking in the case of SPJIMR. This turns out to be a benefit for SPJIMR as students who are not at the top are able to get good roles at top consulting firms. So in terms of Finance, Consulting, and IIM tag, IIM Lucknow seems to be better but is similar to SPJIMR in all other aspects.
When it comes to choosing between IIM ABCL and NMIMS, it is true that IIM ABCL holds a better reputation. However, it's important to note that many companies that visit IIM I and K also visit the NMIMS campus. In terms of compensation and job profiles, there isn't a significant difference either. So, if you perform well at NMIMS, there's a high probability that your career path won't be different from those at IIM K and IIM I.
While it would have been ideal to opt for IIM I, K, or ABCL if you had the choice, if you're not entirely confident about securing a seat in one of these top-tier institutes, NMIMS is still a great option. It's also essential to keep in mind that work experience is a crucial criterion for shortlisting in all companies, and anything below 2 years is considered quite impressive.
It's essential to have a clear understanding of the differences between IIM ABCL and NMIMS. While the former has a better brand name, the latter can provide you with a well-rounded experience as well. It ultimately comes down to your performance and how well you can leverage the opportunities provided to you. With a strong academic background, aptitude, and personality, you can excel at either institute and make a successful career for yourself. So, don't stress too much about choosing between the two and instead focus on preparing yourself to perform well at whichever institute you ultimately choose
BCG and McK have a long standing relationship with IIM Kozhikode. The recent figures have seen an increase in the number of placements. The table below will help you get an overview of the same:

As you can see BCG hires more than McK although there has been an increase in both. IIM Kozhikode is becoming famous for its excellent placement drives with visits from reputed firms like Accenture, Deloitte S&O , EY , PwC and KPMG.
The reason why IIM Kozhikode is given more preference by candidates is due to the size of the batch. The Mumbai campus was started by IIM Indore and the placement process of both institutes is carried out at the same time. Both are among the top ten business schools in India.
The following data shows how the two institutions can go head to head:
Categories | IIM Kozhikode | IIM Indore |
Admission Criteria | CAT/GMAT | CAT/GMAT |
Seats Available | 375 | 450 |
Average CTC | 18 LPA | 19 LPA |

Notable companies that are regular visitors of IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore are American Express, ICICI Banks, Bosch, Amazon, Indigo, etc.
As a former student of IIM Kozhikode, I want to make it clear that no program offered at any of the IIMs comes with 100% placement assurance.
You’ll be offered the best placement assistance, but they can not guarantee a job. Moreover, the placement process at IIMs is mostly run by students. It is unlike private colleges, where large teams work to make the students placement ready, and also bring in companies during placement season.
I would hence suggest you choose IIMK not just for placements, but also to attain high quality education and exposure.
Yes, IIM Kozhikode will likely allow the LSM students to sit for consulting companies. It is the Placement Committee that offers the consulting companies the best students. So they will surely highlight the benefits of this course to potential recruiters. Students from any course are not restricted to sit for placements at all. Even the ups and downs of the placements are controlled by the General Management and not the institute itself.
This program is likely to produce all rounded talents so consulting common should definitely hire a few to create talent for the company.
No, I don’t think IIM Kozhikode's selection criteria are biased in favor of students from Bengal. One of my uncles was on the interview panel a few years ago. He shared that shortlisting good candidates in Bangalore was a difficult task. Very few candidates were suitable enough to get selected. On voicing his concern for the same he was told not to worry as they will surely get more than enough candidates from Kolkata.
The conclusion is that whatever the reason, there is no special bias towards students from East India. It’s just that a lot of them clear CAT.
Yes, class 10 marks do matter for IIM Kozhikode. The weightage however keeps changing every year and also varies from one IIM to another. The detailed admission procedure is given in that year’s admission policy brochure.
The past academics comes into the picture for the following scenarios:
The table below shows the minimum class 10 marks required at IIM Kozhikode for interview shortlisting.
Category | Class 10 percentage |
GEN | 60 |
NC-OBC/EWS | 60 |
SC | 55 |
ST/PwD | 55 |
The weightage for preparing WAT and PI shortlist of class 10th is 30%. So yes, class 10 marks matter to get into IIM Kozhikode.
Depending on the candidate's profile, an IIM callback minimum percentile may apply. In addition to CAT exam results, a number of other factors, including academic standing, work history, professional certifications, gender diversity, and others, are taken into consideration during the top IIMs' admissions process. Each IIM has a different approach to how much importance it places on prior academic performance. IIM Indore, for instance, places a lot of emphasis on performance in the 10th and 12th grades.
Three steps make up the IIMK admissions process:
People who consistently perform well in school are known to receive rewards from IIM Indore (especially in 10th and 12th). There are three stages to the IIM Indore admissions process:
This is a general overview of the IIM Indore and Kozhikode admissions process.
