What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

Apart from the regular academic curriculum and clinical postings to various Hospitals, Clinics, Special Schools, and Old Age Homes, in our college, we organize events at regular intervals that will benefit our students in their professional lives. One such event happened on the 23rd and 24th of June,2023. It was a 2-day hands-on workshop on "Fundamentals of Osteopathic Manual Therapy (Lumber and Thorax)" Level 2. Level 1 was held on May 28 and 29, 2023.

We also organize community postings for our students under supervision of our experienced faculty members, so that they understand the real challenges that are faced by health professionals in real time and gain valuable experiences in dealing with the same.

Our students, especially postgraduates and sometimes final years, also take part in national and international sports events as a part of the medical team. They were a part of Khelo India, the Durand Cup, and the very recent Asian Kho Kho Championship.

What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?

Programs like CMEs, hands-on workshops, Seminars, Health camps, etc. tend to shape and mold the students' existing knowledge as well as expand their field of skill and knowledge, making them better professionals.

Exposure to sports events loads their experience with practicality and increases their decision-making and knowledge application skills.

What will you say the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?

We at CPMS provide our students with the opportunity to see real bones and organs in our anatomy and physiology laboratory. We also have a modern and updated OPD equipped with advanced physiotherapy treatment modalities. With all these, our students form a strong foundation in the basics of the human body and are practically well aware of all the modern-day treatment modes, which will help them professionally in the future.

We also organize health camps for the community and send our students on community-based postings.

We have tie-ups with all the renowned hospitals in Guwahati, where our students get exposure to a wide range of cases, helping them to understand and learn new treatment protocols.

Apart from hospital tie-ups within Guwahati, we also send our students to all the Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals across Assam for a better insight into the healthcare system.

What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?

As mentioned above, we not only stick to our academic curriculum set by the university but also go much beyond that so as to reinforce our students' knowledge, by organizing regular, CMEs, Seminars and Hands-on Workshops, Health Camps and exposure to sports events and last but not the least, access to a well maintained and well equipped OPD.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

All the above-mentioned programs that we organize are target-specific, i.e., each program is held to enhance the knowledge of students in a specific academic year. So students in each academic year are well trained in their respective academic curriculum and much more, which cumulatively helps them deal with real-life professional scenarios.

How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

All our faculty members are either well-experienced or are the best candidates who get through the scrutiny of our job interview team, held specially to test their teaching skills and knowledge. Apart from their past academic performances, every faculty member undergoes Faculty Development Programs, which are held under the banner of different universities or our university, i.e., SSUHS.

How do you tend to build an industry connect with this program?

Physiotherapy is a branch of the health sciences that, in today’s world, needs no introduction. As it forms a very integral part of our healthcare system, we can see that the connection is inevitable. Our aim in CPMS is to make quality professionals who can support this with their ethics, knowledge, and skills.

What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program into your curriculum?

Being the oldest Physiotherapy college in entire North East India, founded in 2003, we have faced the most challenges, like finding shade under a reputed University, as no university in Assam was providing Physiotherapy courses then, so we had to get affiliated with numerous other universities before being affiliated with SSUHS.

Secondly, there was a lack of awareness for this course back then, so getting students was a major problem. Hospital tie-ups were also a challenge because of the same lack of awareness. But we have overcome all of these challenges and sustained ourselves till date to emerge as one of the best institutes in the Northeast to study Physiotherapy.

What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

All the projects that our students are working on are community-centric, be it in the field of health, sports or general fitness in working population. Our Post-graduates are constantly researching on common health problems, sports or general injuries, or poor ergonomics among professionals and finding their etiology as well as the best physiotherapeutic solution for them.
