Dr. M. Sengaliappan is an Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of Computer Applications at Nehru College of Management. With an MCA degree and an M.Phil., he also holds an M.E. in Software Engineering and a PhD. He has 15 years of experience in research, development, training, and academics at different institutions in India in areas of expertise, Computer Networks and Cloud Computing.

Dr. Sengaliappan has presented and published several papers in the above areas in leading journals and conferences. He has organized many workshops and conferences as the local chair, and program chair. He has been serving as an organizing committee member for many workshops, seminars, and conferences. Five PhD scholars and 16 M.Phil. scholars successfully completed their degrees. Moreover, he has written two books in the area of Networking –Tree based routing protocol and another in Digital Image Processing. He received the Star Faculty Award from Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science for rendering long service in the institution for 20 years. He is also a lifetime member of the Madras Library Association.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

The Master of Computer Applications (MCA) is a well-known two year professional programme approved by AICTE and offered by Nehru College of Management. This is the latest program that concentrates on industry based skill development in the students. It ensures the students get the maximum exposure and benefit out of it.

What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?

MCA is a well known programme in the industry. However, what sets our programme apart is that it has a unique curriculum and includes the latest technology as a subject. We also have more electives each semester to offer students choices in the terms of career possibilities.

What are the best practices in the course you’re offering?

The best practices in the course is that we offer value-added courses like IBM watson studio by IBM. Other popular course choices that we offer through partnerships with others are the IBM Cloud by Digilabs and life skills programmes for computer professionals from dedicated professional concerns.

What are some valuable insights into the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?

We follow different teaching pedagogies, like learning through practice and fostering the development of essential skills for our students. We focus on providing them with problem-solving techniques, analytical thinking, design thinking, communication, teamwork and leadership skills through the training offered at our institution.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

Our institution has registered more institutional membership with professional bodies like the ICT Academy, and the Computer Society of India and has MoUs with IT-related companies to incorporate activities and projects. These require students to analyse, evaluate and think of innovative solutions to the task and solving the problem will ensure the students prepare for their future.

How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

We have an objective for each programme based on which we prepare the lesson plan for every semester. The plan is prepared with programme outcomes and programme-specific outcomes in mind. We also keep in mind to include the course outcomes and student-centric teaching and learning methodology, which focuses on measuring student performance.

How do you tend to build an industry connected with this program? 

Our institution has several MoUs with IT companies where students are assigned to do internship projects (mini and main projects) in their required domain by the industry. This helps students connect their classroom knowledge with industry practices. Our industry connection plays a vital role in market exposure and building rapport with the current market standards in the industry.

What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?

Our institution is affiliated with Bharathiar University. Therefore, we have no freedom to modify the syllabus. This is our biggest challenge currently. However, apart from the curriculum we offer value-added courses through professional bodies. 

What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program? 

We have mandatory mini projects that students have to complete in the third semester. We also have the main project in the final semester that our students are working on through this program. There are also other projects that the students are instructed to do in the course of study.

What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?

Our students are highly motivated through the campus placement process, as we provide training through aptitude, group discussion, and technical and personal interview training. They benefit from having a positive attitude and the right skills to face the competitive world.
