Tell us about your experience in the Education Industry.

I had a passion from the beginning to teach the students. I remember those days when I was pursuing my graduation from Delhi University and later I did my chartered accountancy from Delhi itself and during my days of chartered accountancy, I used to take the lectures. I basically kept updating myself and also my articleship students. And at that time, on Saturdays also we used to take the lectures of our students so that they can be connected with the latest updates in the market. So that was the period I think that was a learning place for me. And later when I came to Indore, I did my MBA from IMS Indore and completed my Ph.D in the area of banking. And after that, I joined as a professor in various colleges of Indore. And during those days, I found that I am very good at teaching, because I had a real passion for teaching. Now I believe I will be able to justify to the students so that students will benefit from my experience of chartered accountancy. Presently, I am a HOD, Faculty of management and Commerce, Oriental University, Indore and as well as a faculty. And I think, nowadays, I am finding out that a lot of changes have taken place in the job market also. Now besides the subject skills, students should also have good communication skills as I have seen that in the stock market or in the job market, we can say, besides the subject skills which you are carrying out, you must also possess good communication skills because they also play a very important role in the lives of students who are employed in the MBA/BBA or in BCOM, they lack in the area of communication skills. And because of that, they are not being employed at a better price or at a better job market. So in the Oriental University, we have a separate department which is offering a lot of soft skills services to the students.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

A leader is a person who knows how to get the work done from the team and if any team member lacks in a certain area, so as a leader you should basically convert that person into a performer. It is the role of a leader that if the person in the team is not working properly, he should equip that particular non-performer and convert that non- performer into a performer and bring that person in the limelight over a period of time. As a leader I have a lot of responsibilities towards the students, towards the management, towards the faculty members, so I always work along with the team members and I convert non-performers to performers.

Being the HOD, what are your responsibilities towards the students?

I am HOD as well as a teacher, so I know what is required for the students. They are not only studying the subjects of their specialization but are also updated through certain guest lectures from the industry. So, they are more exposed to the industry because industry people know what is required. For example in the banking sector we call people from the manager level and they basically explain what skill set they should possess to become employable in banking, similarly in the corporate sectors also we call specialized people and they train the students and discuss the problems and solve them. Case studies methodology is used to teach the students. Industry professionals’ interaction with students help to bridge the gap between the academia and the industry. I personally take care of these aspects as a HOD and we provide the value-added courses to the students along with our regular courses to fill the gap.

What were the challenges faced by you as the HOD?

As the Head of Department (HOD), one faces a multitude of challenges, including leadership and team management, resource allocation, curriculum development (in educational contexts), quality assurance, conflict resolution, performance evaluation, strategic planning, external relations, adaptation to change, and workload management. Success in this role hinges on adeptly juggling administrative responsibilities while fostering a cohesive and productive department, all while aligning with overarching organizational goals. Effective leadership, communication, and adaptability are essential traits for navigating the multifaceted challenges.

What is the top priority of your college in upcoming years?

We prioritize creating a safe and stimulating environment for bright minds to interact and learn together. We offer educational experiences that combine fun and learning, and we strive to provide a creative and rewarding workplace for our employees. Ultimately, our goal is to prepare students for responsible and productive roles in society.

Any suggestions to the aspiring students and young generation?

My suggestion to the aspiring students is that they should basically acquire the skill set in advance and they should plan the next 10 years of their life in advance. For example, if a student is studying in 11th class he should know about his destination or goal and according to it he should acquire the skills in advance so that his journey will become smoother. So, I would request every student that they should decide in advance where they want to go because sometimes when we deal with the students, I find that they are not aware of their own goals. Even after doing their graduation they do not know where to go whether they want to do MBA, they want to go for any other program they are not clear about, so I would suggest everyone to plan in advance and accordingly acquire those skill sets which are required for reaching that particular stage.
