Prof. Amar Pal Singh is the Dean of University School of Law and Legal Studies, GGS IP University, New Delhi. He has three Masters to his credit, one in English Literature, from Meerut University, two in Law, one from MDS University, Ajmer (LL.M. Constitution) and the other from European Academy of Legal Theory, Brussels (Belgium) in Legal Philosophy. In his interview he talks about his philosophy of education to inspire the students, and to produce an effective learning environment, and effective teamwork is necessary. Moreover, he defines the role of a leader to guide and help in reaching the objectives of the institute. The cooperation of our alumni and professionals in the field is an essential element of our work culture. He mentions that the scenario over time has seen a shift towards law sectors, and there are numerous new opportunities ahead in this field. To help students excel and create a prosperous career in the Law domain, the institute offers mentorship programmes in specific areas. In the end he appreciates the talent and enthusiasm of the students; however advises them to build patience, as Rome was not built in a day.

My philosophy of education is to deliver the best in the classroom an present an example to inspire the students

Education is an attempt at bringing out the best in the child and the man, and this is not possible unless the students themselves feel inspired and imbibe the learning process within. Therefore my philosophy of education is to deliver the best in the classroom or elsewhere and also personally present an example so that students feel inspired and try to bring out the best within them.

An effective learning environment is produced by an effective teamwork

Running a learning environment is teamwork and therefore an attempt is made all the time to enjoy the efforts of the whole of the team, which is basically the strategy as well as the objective to achieve the key objectives of the curriculum and teaching process. For example, a number of extra-curricular activities which require lot of team efforts of the whole faculty and a number of students as well, are aimed at achieving the key objectives of the institutional mechanism and honing the essential set of professional skills amongst students so as to make them market ready entities, capable of performing required functions with an optimum level of efficiency.

The role of the leader at the helm is to help the fellow learners to inspire, guide and help in achieving the objectives that one decides for oneself, of course as a member of the team. We as member of the team called, University School of Law and Legal Studies aspires to open new vistas in the arena of law, legal studies, theoretical and clinical legal education through an incessant endeavour towards developing academic potential, critical analytical ability, advocacy, counseling and mediation skills so as to fully equip the students with learning which is intellectually stimulating, socially vital and professionally enriching. The objective is to prepare every member of the team to be ready and capable of performing every single function

Doing things on your own is one thing, but getting it done by your team is another. The objective is not to just get the things done, but to prepare every member of the team to be ready and capable of performing every single function aimed at achieving the objective of the institution. And inspiring others is a tricky business, you not only need to be ready to perform every duty on your own, but also be capable of doing that. That is the challenge, as the functioning of a University School of study presents several challenges every single day requiring a very different kind of set of skills to resolve the problems that present themselves in new colours all the time.

The objective of University School of Law and Legal studies is the theoretical and clinical legal education, which should lead towards developing academic potential and critical legal abilities. The design of the curriculum is created that the aims and objectives of the institution are not something to be talked about in policy papers alone, but reached everyday engagement of the whole team, including students, who incessantly work upon the ideas and innovative methods of handling problems in a new and emerging paradigm. Professional Skill Developmental Activity is one such example. Periodical review of the whole curriculum and reworking the objectives is a constant work in hand, wherein the industry cooperation, the cooperation of our alumni and professionals in the field is an essential element of our work culture.

The scenario in the past two decades has changed and the law segment is providing new opportunities in career development

Three decades back, the common experience was that Law was the last choice of the students aspiring for higher studies. Medical, Engineering and IT sectors were the first choices of stakeholders in the education sector. However, what is being observed during the last two decades is that Law Courses are attracting best brains from across the spectrum and students are preferring law courses over medical, science and Engineering courses. This is probably because of two basic reasons, one, that the legal field has been offering newer and newer opportunities for career making, from simple litigation to consultancy, teaching, international jobs, corporate jobs and so on. Secondly, the life process itself is becoming increasingly complex every single day and law is that instrument, which helps us in resolving these complexities in a better way. 

Law School consistently and continuously keeps on working on the special sets of skills of our dynamic students

There are a host of extra-curricular and professional skill development activities that University school of Law and Legal studies consistently keep working. From moot courts competitions, intra moots and general moot courts, to client counselling sessions, to developing drafting skills of the students and several soft skills, the Law School consistently and continuously keeps on working on these special sets of skills of our dynamic students.

Through our mentorship programme we counsel and guide students to help them move into specific areas

Competition does not deter us or our students; in fact we prepare our students to meet the challenges of the competitions every single day. Those who intend to move into specific areas, we actively counsel and guide them to work in the areas of their choice, for which we have a system called mentorship programme, wherein every single student is placed under the mentorship of a teacher and the student can keep in touch with the mentor for all kinds of his/her special needs of career. In case the mentor thinks it is something which he or she cannot handle he has a whole lot of resources that he can resort to and help the student in achieving his or her targets.

Although the young generation is enthusiastic and talented, they lack patience 

This 21st century generation that we are mentoring is an amazingly talented and enthusiastic generation, restlessly working and pursuing their goals. However, the patience that is needed for every single task in human life, which gives unique meaning to human life is missing. So the suggestion would be to work hard, but keep patience. Rome was not built in a day. Therefore for the purpose of evolving your own Eldorado you need to work harder and harder but at the same time keep patience and give time to the element of time.
