Miranda: A place of wonders!

Student view on course curriculum

The major reason which intrigued me in selecting this course I.e. BA Program (Multidisciplinary) is because it provides versatility to the students. Majoring in Political Science and minoring in History, I have realised that choosing this course was definable the best decision I have made for myself. The areas of improvement are still there regardless of the fact that there are mainly only positive aspects of this course in my experience. The fact that this course has a very wide syllabus makes it very hectic for students to grasp each and every single information. Hence, the volume of the syllabus should be reduced to a certain extent. The teaching methods are mainly in the form of classroom type teacher-to-student.

Internship opportunity provided by the college

The internship opportunities are available to the students of the second and the consecutive years. I am from the first year so, we do not get the internship opportunities. But, as for what I have heard from my seniors, the internships are varied in the type of field. Hence, students belonging from any background (humanities, Sciences or Commerce) can get the internship opportunity.

Top company recruiting from the campus and highest package

From the second semester, students become eligible for campus placements. Several companies like Boat, TATA, Reliance etc. offer internships to students. The highest average package goes up till 9LPA.

Yearly fees structure and scholarship

The BA program fees is 15460 yearly and the fees for accomodation (hostel) is 32190 for the first semester and 26000 for the second semester. There is some difference in the fees between the general and the category students (SC,ST, OBC and EWS) but it is now huge. Financial aids and scholarships are provided for the students belonging from EWS category.

College fest and various activities

Currently, in the month of February, the fest of BAP department is going to be held on 18th of February specifically (the name of the fest is called Exuberance). Other than this, the fest of every department and society is held between February and May. The main fest of the college called the 'Tempest' is held in April The sports facilities of the college are good other than the fact that we do not have a huge ground in the college. There is a Lawn Tennis court, a volleyball court, an amazing basketball court etc. There are numerous societies of the college like the Hindi dramatics society (called Anukriti), the western music society (Orpheus), the film society (Celluloid), the fine art society (Adwitya), the fashion crew, the environment society (MH Vatavaran) etc.

Hostel facilities provided by the college

The hostel facilities, according to the fees we hostellers pay are more than enough. We have a spacious room with two bedrooms,(some having four bedrooms: these are alloted to the students who come late to avail the hostel facilities) a pantry for students to fill their bottles or cook some food or wash the dishes along with a refrigerator, the rooms are attached with a balcony. The fees of the hostel for BA Program students for the first semester is around ?32,000/- and for the second semester, it is around ?26,000/-. In order to register for the hostel, one has to go to the link of Miranda House and then, she can find the option to register for the hostel. There are several PGs in North campus. The main areas for these being, Vijaynagar and Kamla Nagar.

Student views on the faculty and exams

The faculty to student ratio is around 1:200 (considering all the departments though, the figure can differ from one department to another). Most of the professors are extremely amiable and well read in their particular field of study. The exams are held on the ending of a semester. This means that there are no mid semester exams. The pattern of the exam is pretty easy. Thus, almost every student can pass the exam but, exceptionally a very few number of students can fail as well if their performance is extremely low.

Admission process and eligibility criteria

The best part of the whole CURT experience is that Miranda House and the course BA Programme, both were my first preferences and fortunately, I got both of my first preferences. I chose Miranda over the other colleges for several reasons. First, it has a very vibrant and diverse community of students. Second, the course which I wanted was available in this college. Third, the peaceful and the beautiful environment also attracted me to keep the college on the top of the list. Fourth, I wanted to have an experience of an all girls college after being a student of co-ed college my entire life. The eligibility criteria for the college is to be a 12th grade pass out and to appear for the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) with the subjects studied specifically in the 12th grade.

Night life inside the campus

The favourite hang out spots for Mirandans are endless. Be it the Principal's Lawns or the Hostel Lawns. Each and every single corner of the college is a unique in it's own way. Outside the college, there is the famous spot where everyone goes for having tea or print their readings called Patel Chest! Other than that, we also have the famous'Tom Incle' outside the 2nd gate of our college who serves amazing dishes, the most famous being 'Tom uncle ki Maggi'.

Delhi University: 20 Answered Questions

Which is India's top university, Delhi University or JNU?

Apoorva Bali
Gaurav SinghUndergrad student is at University

There is a stark difference between both universities in terms of culture as well as fees. JNU or Jawaharlal Nehru University is mostly about expression, literature, culture, research, and building intellectual facilities whereas DU is all about glamor, fashion, fests, high cutoffs, and placements.

In financial terms, JNU is much more affordable than DU. Be it course fees or hostel fees, JNU cuts down on expenses a lot.

JNU is learning for life, whereas DU focuses on learning the bare essentials and getting placed in a reputed firm.

One more significant difference to consider is that JNU is more about post-graduation whereas DU focuses more on graduation. The difference in intellectual level stems from the same reason.

If you are still confused between the two, spend equal time on both campuses and you will get the answer soon.

Yes, you get your migration certificate after the completion of your degree. But colleges don’t provide you with it. Right after completion, colleges only give you your:

  • Character Certificate
  • Provisional Certificate

The final degree certificate is handed over after around 1-2 years.

To get your Migration Certificate, you are required to fill out a form. This form can be obtained from your college or from V.C. Office. Get it attested by your college and submit it to the examination department of Delhi University.

Duration: 1 week

Fees: INR 500

Note- students at the South campus are to apply for a migration certificate at the D.U’s examination department in the South campus. The rest have to apply at the examination dept. at the V.C office on the North campus.

When do we get original degree from Delhi university?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

Delhi University is a highly prestigious institute offering premium education to its students. Every student completing his or her studies from here is awarded a degree certificate. This certificate is issued by the university and is an official recognition of the student’s educational qualification.

However, it's crucial that a student procures his/her original degree certificate from the university as it plays a big role in the admission process of higher studies as well as jobs and other opportunities.

The availability of this degree depends on the course and the duration of the course.UG students usually receive their original degree certificate within 3 months of the completion of the course.

You can check the same by going to SOL and ask someone from their administration department. Sometimes it may take a year or more to get the original degree from Delhi University.

What are some of the worst Delhi University colleges?

Pratyasha
Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

Delhi University is the most sought-after institute by students of graduation and postgraduation. Even though clearing cutoffs and securing a seat at DU is extremely challenging, certain colleges at Delhi University have failed to secure a favorable student opinion, either due to poor infrastructure, negligent faculty/ administration, or simply because of the poor neighborhood.

Some of these colleges, as suggested by a few friends of mine, are-

  • Ramanujan College, Kalkaji: Poor infrastructure in terms of classrooms and especially, the canteen area
  • Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women
  • Acharya Narendra Dev College, Kalkaji: Poor infrastructure, poor canteen facilities, poor washroom facility. Not a pleasant neighborhood. Lab facilities are below par and equipments are very old. However, the teachers are very supportive. The admin section is not very helpful and supportive towards the students
  • Satyawati College
  • Some other colleges include- Shyam Lal College, Shri Aurobindo College, Deshbandhu College, PGDAV, Zakir Husain Delhi College, JDMC, Bharti College, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, and Aryabhatta College

This list is subjective and some of the people have even been graduated 5 or 6 years ago. Colleges at DU undergo constant improvements in terms of administration, infrastructure, academics, and so on. It depends also upon individual taste as to which college one finds good or bad.

Can Physical Education be included in the calculation of percentage of Best Four Subjects in Delhi University for B.A programming?

Arpita GargStudied Bachelor of Commerce with Honours at University of Delhi (2019)

Yes, physical education can be included while calculating your best four for Delhi University but it has a disadvantage of 2.5%.

This means that 2.5% will be deducted from the total percentage of your best four subjects. This calculation of the best four is different for every course and very few colleges have a different method of selecting the best four and that is also limited to some special courses.

Apart from this, all the colleges have a similar procedure for the best four calculations. Delhi University releases an admission bulletin every year and you can consult it for better understanding.

How was your first day in DU?

Satyam Purwar
SagardeepBsc life sciences from University of Delhi (Graduated 2021)

One of the students of DU shared her experience by explaining that the orientation day was the first day of lectures. When everyone arrived in the designated room, their faculty was there to greet them. She witnessed a lot of strange faces. Fortunately, she had her roommate to chat with because she was also a classmate. Lecturers treated them extremely well. Then everyone began introducing themselves.

The first person to start was their HOD. Her remarks brightened their day. They were on edge because of how seriously she began but gradually calmed them down with her humble words. She shared her beliefs with us and gave them a verbal tour of the campus. She then requested an introduction from each of the students. At the end of the orientation, she wished them luck.

The rest of the day was spent lying in bed, talking on the phone, and doing nothing. After three weeks, proper classes began. By the fifth week, the books had been recommended. DU released the date sheet just as the students finished one chapter. It was a completely new experience for her, but it was well worth it, as she says it.

How do I convert SGPA to percentage under the new CBCS rules at DU?

Sapna Malik
Harsh RanjanBachelors in Economics from University of Delhi (Graduated 2018)

There has been considerable confusion in Delhi University's grading system for a long time. The university proposed multiple adjustments before a proper method was finally implemented and made public. The SGPA calculator is used in the educational field to translate SGPA to percentage. The calculations are based on the student's overall performance on the corresponding semester exam in general courses.

To convert SGPA into a percentage, the following steps are being followed by the students:

  • The SGPA for each semester should be determined first.

  • Adding the semester-by-semester averages once you get them.

  • Subtracting the number of semesters you have taught from the total of the SGPAs.

  • Finally, calculate your SGPA by multiplying it by 10, then take 7.5 out of the result.

The CBCS System used at DU is Relative Grading rather than Absolute Grading.

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

In order to determine the differences between NCWEB and SOL, let’s discuss the institutes on a one-to-one basis.

SOL (School of Open Learning)

  • SOL or the School for Open Learning is a University of Delhi-affiliated college.
  • Here you can freely gain knowledge through proper classes and lecturers.
  • Courses are offered in diverse fields ranging from humanities and business to social science.
  • The primary purpose of this institute is to impart education to people who wish to pursue further education while they work and those preparing for competitive exams.

NCWEB

  • This institute is specially run for women candidates who want to pursue professional courses along with regular jobs.
  • The classes are conducted only on Sundays enabling them to do career enhancement courses during weekdays.
  • However, Non-Collegiate students are forbidden from pursuing full-time degree courses.

Hope I made it clear!
