The DoTE is expected to conduct the TNEA 2025 Selection Process in July 2025. The candidates who belong to the Sports quota candidates will participate in a special category counselling scheduled for July 25-27, 2025, before the general counselling begins on July 29, 2025. The Selection Process for Sports Quota provides the opportunity for athletes to get admission into engineering courses based on their sports achievements.

  • The government also increased the reservation of 2% for sports achievers from the 2025-2026 academic year, providing more seats and opportunities for student-athletes.
  • 1,409 seats account for around 2% of the overall available engineering seats in Tamil Nadu for TNEA 2025. The seat allocation provides a support and encouragement to the athletes in the higher education.

TNEA 2025 Sports Quota Candidates Selection Process, Rank list will be announced on June 27, 2025, and then there will be grievances redressal from June 28 to July 2, 2025.

TNEA 2025 Eligibility Criteria for Sports Quota

The DoTE has set the Eligibility criteria for Sports Quota, The candidates must have completed their Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, achieving a minimum of 45% for the general category or 40% for SC/ST/MBC/DNC/SCA categories. The athelet should have the achievements in recognized sports at the state, national, or international levels.

Nativity Requirements Candidates must meet one of the following:
  • Studied Classes 8 to 12 in Tamil Nadu.
  • Children of Central Government employees serving in Tamil Nadu for at least 5 years.
  • Children of All India Service Tamil Nadu cadre officers.
  • Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who have studied in Tamil Nadu and possess the necessary documentation.

Increased Reservation for Sports Quota

The DoTE has increased the TNEA 2025 Sports Quota Reservation to 2% of the total engineering seats in Tamil Nadu. Earlier it was 1%, which is a significant step forward in encouraging and rewarding the efforts of the athletes who have represented Tamil Nadu or India in various sports competitions.

Impact on Total Seats

Considering the total number of available engineering seats in Tamil Nadu, which is around 240,091 seats in 433 colleges, 2% of the seats reserved for sports achievers means that around 4,801 seats are reserved for sports persons.

How to Apply for a Sports Quota in College?

To apply for a Sports Quota in College in TNEA 2025, the candidates must have the minimum educational qualification, i.e,

  • Completed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • Minimum aggregate of 45% for the General category and 40% for SC/ST/MBC/DNC/SCA categories.

TNEA 2025 Selection Process Fees

The candidate needs to pay the TNEA registration fee, which varies based on the category:

  • General Category: ₹500

After the submission of Documents, the candidates are required to verify their sports certificate, typically in person at authorized TFCs or the TNEA Office in Chennai.

  • At verification, candidates need to produce the original sports certificates and academic documents.
  • Sports certificate verification is compulsory for sports quota candidates. The candidates can be requested to submit additional documents as necessary.

TNEA 2025 Counselling for Special Categories

The DoTE is expected to start the TNEA 2025 Selection Process for Sports Quota in July 2025. Sports quota candidates will participate in the special category counselling before the general counselling rounds.

  • Choice Filling: Candidates will enter their preferred options of colleges and courses, depending on availability and rank.
  • Allotment: Allotment will be made on merit, availability, and candidate order of preference.
  • Confirmation of Allotment: Applicants will need to confirm the seat after allotment within the time frame specified. They have the option for the following:

Accept and Join

  • Accept and Upward (if they want to wait for a superior seat in future rounds)
  • Reject and Go to Next Round (if unhappy with the assignment)
  • Reject and Withdraw (if they do not wish to pursue the seat)

If you have participated in State/National/International level games and sports you are eligible to apply for admission under TNEA Sports Quota. The assessment mark differ as per the level of participation. You can check the detailed mark assessment from TNEA Sports Reservation.

Under the TNEA Sports Reservation Policy, students who have played at the state, national and international levels in 54 types of games and sports are eligible to get admission through sports quota.
