MTech in IIT: Admission Process

Candidates who are interested in seeking admission in M.Tech in IIT have to register on the official website of the respective IIT and also register for the Common Offer Acceptance Portal 2024 (COAP), an online counselling portal for IIT M.Tech admission. It should be noted that COAP isn't an admission portal for admission to IIT, candidates need to apply separately to each institute for admission to M.Tech courses. Written tests, Group Discussions and Personal Interview rounds will be held in the respective IIT.

Steps are given below for the Admission Process in IIT for M.Tech. 

  • Step 1: Fill out the online application form for Respective IIT for M.Tech 2024 admission
  • Step 2: Register for COAP 2024
  • Step 3: Check allotment status as per the COAP 2024 seat allotment schedule
  • Step 4: Log in to the respective IIT candidate portal for admission status/ schedule of written test and/or interview
  • Step 5: Complete the further admission process as per instructions from the Respective IIT portal

Eligibility

Candidates seeking admission to 2 years M.tech Programme must have to fulfil the eligibility criteria given below.

  • Candidates must pass the Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate (55% aggregate for SC/ ST/ PwD category) for any institution recognised by the UGC.
  • There is no Age Limit for M.Tech Programme 
  • Candidates must qualified GATE exam and have a Valid GATE score.

Entrance Exam

There is no separate Admission exam for M.Tech in IIT. Candidates seeking admission to M.Tech in IIT must have to qualify for GATE and obtain a Valid GATE for the counselling process. Each IIT has its admission registration window. 

How to clear cut off for IIT?

In order to get admission to IIT, candidates have to qualify for the GATE exam which is considered one of the toughest exams. It is tougher than JEE Mains and JEE Advance. Candidates must prepare for the GATE with full dedication, Make strategies for different topics and obtain a valid GATE score to clear the cut-off. Candidates must remember a few points for better preparation. 

  1. Conduct full research on the desired courses which they want to pursue from IIT in M.Tech programmes. 
  2. Follow the official syllabus published by the conducting body on the official website of GATE. Understand the exam pattern, question types, and difficulty level of the question and start preparation according to it. 
  3. Follow the recommended books, make a proper plan and focus on time management for the question paper. 
  4. Must focus on practical knowledge and try to solve as many questions as the previous year's question papers for the GATE exam. 
  5. Try to give as many possible mock tests as it resembles the question paper and it will help in creating a basic idea about the pattern of the question, the students should practise for the exam in online mode as the exam is computer-based.
  6. Candidates should not make any last-minute preparation for any new topics as it creates confusion, stay focused on your preparation
  7. Apply for All IITs and IISc don’t lose your chance because of overconfidence and don't become anyone IIT-specific oriented. 
  8. Do prepare for the Written tests, Group discussion and Personal Interviews as all IITs will conduct these three rounds for the final Admission because having a Valid GATE score will not confirm your admission.

Ques. What are the required fees for filling out the application form?

Ans. The application fee is as follows,

  • All other candidates: Rs. 300/­
  • Women candidates: Rs. 150/­

Ques. I have a degree from Foreign University. Whether it will be considered for admission at IIT Bombay?

Ans. You need to submit the “Equivalence Certificate” from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi for the qualifying Exam and proof of having First class or 60% (55% for SC/ST) marks or equivalent in the qualifying examination.

Ques. With one application fee, how much Specialisation can I apply for?

Ans. You can apply for 10 Specialisations.

Ques. Do Non­GATE candidates have to register at COAP?

Ans. No. Non­GATE candidates will not register at COAP

Ques. I want to apply as a part-time or sponsored candidate. Do I need to have a GATE?

Ans. Candidates having two years of relevant work experience are exempted from the requirement of a GATE score, provided their candidature is sponsored by the employer (except Computer Science & Engg. There is a huge difference in the curriculum of both programs. Although both programs require 64 credits, the breakdown is different. For MTech CSE the department core requires a minimum of 24 credits comprising at least 8 credits each from Pool A, Pool B, and Pool C There is a project too. The remaining credits are for electives. The M.Tech AI course on the other hand has 19 credits from pool A subjects, 12 credits from pool B subjects, and 12 credits from electives. Additionally, there is a 21-credit project where one can work on interdisciplinary cutting-edge problems on AI. M.Tech CSE admissions are done on the basis of GATE CS scores while the cut-off for M.Tech AI is decided by the applications from CS, EE, and ECE disciplines. The M.Tech program in Computer Science (CS) at IIIT Lucknow is worth considering if you cannot get into other similar institutions such as IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore, IIIT Allahabad, NIT Warangal, NIT Trichy, and NIT Karnataka. Though the M.Tech program started only in 2019, companies such as Google, Microsoft, Directi, LinkedIn, Codenation, etc. visit the campus for placements of B.Tech students. So if you are skilled enough, it does not really matter if you are a B.Tech or M.Tech student. The placement records of B.Tech graduates suggest that they are comparable to NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela, and IIIT Allahabad graduates.  In fact, looking at the NIRF data of colleges such as IIIT Allahabad, it is clear that M.Tech students are more in demand in the industry due to lack of quality students along with their added research experience in the field. The curriculum of the course is also very well designed, offering specializations in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. These are the most demanding subjects in the industry currently and if you study well enough, securing a job should not be difficult. As this is a new course, you will not get the alumni advantage, the first batch is yet to pass-out, you could still connect with your B.Tech alumni as well as alumni from IIIT Allahabad (both the colleges were on the same campus until very recently).  Alternatively, you could also hang out with your B.Tech peers and learn from them as well, because they have a very well-laid-out course structure along with a very competitive culture in coding.  You should also consider studying with the PhDs as the knowledge and in-depth research they conduct in areas such as Machine learning will eventually help you to get a competitive advantage.
