Ans. Yes, pursuing a dual MSc BE in BITS Pilani is a very tough and tedious journey. One of my friends ended up going for a dual degree and considers it a complete waste of time. Here is a synopsis of the entire journey. First year: The first year is the deciding time for your BE degree so dualities have to work hard and score a high CGPA.  Second year: This year is relaxed as you will be taught only the courses from your first degree (MSc Degree). Third year: It's from this year that your dual degree flaws will start becoming prominent. While the single-degree students will be busy with humanities electives, you will be busy with compulsory discipline electives in both your degrees. This is also the year that will make you realize which degree you want to pursue professionally. However, by this time you will have 2 degrees to pursue so you won’t be able to give the degree you like enough time.  Fourth year: This year again is very challenging especially if you do PS for two semesters. You will have to study eight courses without any breaks. Because of this your other degree will suffer and result in poor CG. Your PS chances will be affected in turn that depends on your grades.  Fifth year: The fifth-year welcomes the most dreaded thesis. While your counterparts will have to do two discipline electives and another two humanities, you will be doing a 15 credits course alongside sitting for placements. According to the new rules, it is compulsory for students to do a thesis in one degree and PS in the other. Usually, students prefer doing PS in the degree of their choice so a thesis in the degree of not your choice is very difficult. Overall, I feel that a dual degree is a waste of time and you should reconsider your decision if you are planning to get one.Read more

Ans. No, it is not a mistake to prefer IISER Kolkata over IIT KGP for an MSc integrated course in Physics. You are going to get a pure science degree so it makes more sense to get the degree from an institute that focuses on that degree. IIT KGP is popular for its engineering degrees. So, you will be mostly surrounded by people who are pursuing engineering degrees. You won’t get to meet many like-minded students. The course structure of integrated MSc at IITs is also outdated.  At IISER Kolkata, you will get a decent course structure and better faculties for an integrated MSc. Read more

Ques. How should I prepare for IIT Gandhinagar Msc Cognitive Science written test? How many sections are asked in test?

Ans. I gave my written test for MSc. Cognitive Science was offered at IIT Gandhinagar some time back. The written test is the same for everyone and contains 4 Comprehensive-type questions and 1 question on Data Interpretation. The total marks for the test are 25 and the duration for the test is 1 hour. Solve some random comprehensive-type questions from the internet to prepare for your written exam. Passages can come from topics such as - Pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders, case studies of behavioral experiments using VR/AR, the latest advancements in AI and Philosophy, etc. The questions are designed in a manner that can be interpreted by everyone. Ques. What is the process to get admission into IIT Gandhinagar to study in cognitive science?

Ans. For the MSc. Cognitive Science program at IIT Gandhinagar, there are two selection rounds, a written test, and a panel interview. The application process starts from the 2nd week of January and based on your application (SOP and Academics), you are called to take a written test in the last week of February. The written test is the same for everyone. It contains 4 comprehensive-type questions and 1 question on Data Interpretation. The paper is of 25 marks and one-hour duration.  During the interview, a panel of three individuals asks questions based on your branch. For example, if you studied B.Tech Biotechnology, you will be asked questions on it. Some questions are asked from basic Neuroscience and others are asked from the subjects that you studied during your UG.  You will also be asked about your purpose for pursuing this course. This is an important question that will increase your chances of getting selected among students from various educational backgrounds.  The selection rate for the course is very slim, around 3.3%. Usually, your GATE/NET scores are not considered and your academic record, written test performance, and interview performance are taken into consideration for selection into the MSc. Cognitive Science program offered at IIT Gandhinagar. I would suggest you practice comprehensive-type questions and go through your application properly. Ans. According to the reviews online, Bangalore University (BU) is an average institution. It sure is one of the oldest in the country and has a reputation. But it nowadays has been seen to deteriorate day by day.  Here are some facts about BU: The faculty members, though highly experienced, are very few. Most of the classes are taken by Research students. There is no proper management. The exam results are delayed most of the time. The syllabus is not upgraded catering to the latest trends in the industry. Bus service is not provided. The canteen is not clean and well maintained. Most students choose to study in this college due to its brand and reputation. It is an older elite institute which they often think will be reliable. The quality of education is considered to be good and students are selected here for admission based on their merit.Read more

Ques. I have been studying for an MSc in chemistry from IIT Hyderabad, but my 12 marks are just 61.5%. Will I qualify for a PhD abroad?

Ans. For a PhD, class 12th marks are given considerably less importance given that your graduation and post-graduation grades are great. For a Ph.D. abroad, since you will be seeking direct admission into the university and not approaching a specific professor, your past academics matter a lot. Having good class 12 marks, graduation, and post-graduation marks will improve your chances of admission and it’s always better to play safe. In case of average marks, you have the option to write to a professor in Europe who is working in a field that aligns with your research project topic. If you share a common ground with any professor you can get admission by skipping the entire formal admission procedure although you might have to appear for some interviews that will evaluate your research caliber. Overall, my recommendation is to apply everywhere as long as money is not involved. In cases you are required to send documents or GRE scores you need to be careful.Read more

Ques. How is MS by Research at IIT Madras different from Phd? Considering both are research focused programs.

Ans. The basic differences between MR at IIT Madras and Ph.D. at IIT Madras are Research : MS program has less research work than Ph.D. It is considered an extended version of MS and many MS students go for a Ph.D. afterward. Degree : An MS degree is awarded if the student has a minimum of 1 international conference paper and if the panel is satisfied that the work has met the standards of the institute. Whereas a Ph.D. is awarded only when the student has a minimum of 2 international journal papers and if the panel is satisfied and considers it as per the standards of the institute. Coursework: An MS student needs to take at least 5 graduate courses whereas a Ph.D. needs to take 4. Additionally a Direct Ph.D. or M.S.+PhD. needs to take 8. Duration: The time taken to complete an MS program is between 1.5-3 years whereas for a Ph.D. and M.S. + Ph.D it takes 3-5 years. This duration might be increased in case a student is unable to complete it in the given time frame . Viva: In Ph.D., you are required to pass a challenging Viva Voce, while in M.S. you need not. The difficulty level of this viva varies from department to department. Stipend: Under the HTRA scheme, an MS student gets INR 12400 while a Ph.D. student gets INR 25000. Despite these differences, the general routine and schedule of both MS and Ph.D. are similar. Ultimately, more than your program, your research topic and performance will matter.Read more
