Social Studies at Michigan State University

Established in 1924, Michigan State University's Department of Sociology has a long and rich tradition of rigorous research, high-quality teaching, and impactful engagement. The department has substantial strengths in three signature areas: Environment, Health/Medicine, and Migration. These courses emphasize an overall competence in the main areas of the field of sociology, as well as an understanding of a community-based approach to learning; the practice and use of excellent writing skills; the art and application of critical thinking; and the development and use of analytical skills.
