Master's Degree in Engineering / Technology in appropriate branch with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) or equivalent in UG or PG for SC / ST candidates a mere pass in UG and PG is sufficient. Below is the detailed information on the eligibility criteria of NIT Trichy PhD:

  1. Only full-time regular/permanent faculty of AICTE approved Degree level Engineering Institutions and National Institutes of Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR) having a minimum of three years of teaching experience as of 19-10-2006 are eligible to apply. Admissions to the Ph.D. degree program under QIP are open only to candidates with a basic Engineering or Technology Degree/Architecture or such other qualifications.
  2. Computer Programmers, System Programmers, Workshop Staff Guest lecturers, Visiting lecturers, Teaching Assistants, Ad-hoc/Contract or part-time teachers, Technical Assistants, and another such categories of staff are not eligible.
  3. Faculty members of major QIP Centres are not eligible.
  4. Faculty members of the Departments of other institutions (minor centers) recognized for admission under QIP are also not eligible. However, the faculty member is permitted to apply for a field of specialization available elsewhere which is not available in their parent department on the specific recommendations of the Department Head stating that a facility in the particular specialization is required for their institution. Candidates who completed M.Tech under QIP program can not apply before the completion of the bond period

Processing of Newer Materials, Metal Forming, Powder Metallurgy, Corrosion Egg., Welding Engg., Process Modeling, and Fracture Mechanics Master's degree in Engineering/ Technology in appropriate branch with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) or equivalent in UG or PG. For SC/ST candidates, a mere pass in UG and PG is sufficient.
Metal Forming, Intelligent Manufacturing, Project Management, Modeling and Simulation, Robotics, CNC Machining, Cellular Manufacturing, Finite Element Analysis, Production Management, Tolerance Technology, Composite Material Processing, and Quality Engineering. Master's degree in Engineering/ Technology in appropriate branch with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) or equivalent in UG or PG. For SC/ST candidates, a mere pass in UG and PG is sufficient.

NIT Trichy PhD Admission Criteria

NIT Trichy PhD admissions are entrance-based. Candidates must appear for one of the following exams to meet the basic admission criteria:

  • For PhD in Engineering or Architecture, candidates must obtain a valid score in GATE
  • For a Ph.D. in Management Studies, candidates are required a valid score in CAT / XAT / MAT / GMAT / GATE / UGC-NET/JRF/RGNF
  • Candidates applying for PhD in Computer Applications must have a valid GATE/NET/UGC/CSIR/NBHM score
  • PhD in any of the Science disciplines is based on CAT/XAT/GMAT/CMAT/GATE/UGC-NET/MAT exams
  • Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for a technical and personal interview.

  • On the admission portal, create a user ID and password
  • After user ID is generated, candidates can log in to the official site to apply for the Ph.D. program
  • As per the details asked in the application form, candidates need to accurately fill in all the desired details.
  • Next, upload all the documents accordingly.
  • Once all details are filled in, proceed to pay the application fee of Rs 500 for OC/OBC-NCL and Rs 200 for SC/ST/PwD

NIT Trichy PhD Courses Details

  • Duration of the Program: The minimum duration of a full-time Ph.D. program is 2 years and 3 years for a part-time PhD. The maximum duration is 6 years for full-time and 7 years for Part-time scholars.
  • Attendance: The attendance of Research scholars shall be maintained by the department. The scholars can avail of leave as per MHRD/ GOI guidelines with the consent of the guide and HoD.
  • Course Work: The scholars should complete four courses within one year or in one semester. 
  • Comprehensive Examinations: On the completion of prescribed course work, scholars need to take a comprehensive examination which will test their knowledge in their area of specialization. There will be a written examination and a viva voce. On passing, they will be allowed to undertake their doctoral work.
  • Thesis: The researcher will have to present four copies of the synopsis of their research work. They must also give two presentations- one at the beginning of the second year, and the other before submitting the synopsis. If the synopsis is approved, the researcher shall be allowed to submit their thesis 
  • Submission of Thesis: The research scholar shall submit four copies of the thesis within three months of acceptance of the synopsis. The thesis shall then be evaluated. Following this, the researcher will have to undergo a Thesis viva voce examination. If their performance in the viva voce is satisfactory, they will be awarded the PhD degree.
