Admissions to MS in NIT Trichy are based on the GATE exam. The details of the GATE exam are as follows:

Program Structure
Course Duration: The minimum duration for the NIT Trichy MS program is 2 years consisting of 4 semesters. While the maximum duration to complete the course is three years.
Course Work: Course work for the NIT Trichy MS (By Research) is divided into five courses (3 core courses and 2 electives) at the M.Tech level. Out of these, one course is permitted to the sponsored candidates only. The credits for the work will be based on the procedures given for the MTech program. Students are instructed to secure at least 15 credits from 5 courses. Candidates should at least achieve 7.5 CGPA in their overall course.
Progress Report
- Students are instructed to sign the attendance register on all working days as it will help to keep a record of the present researchers. During the course, they are eligible to take 15 days to leave every Semester, after the permission of their HODs.
- Researchers have to submit their report in the prescribed format and it will be forwarded to GTC within two weeks before the end of each 12 months. The report will be sent every year up to the first two years and before the end of each 6 months above 2 years.
- Research scholars have to present themselves before the GTC once a year for the first two years for an evaluation.
Seminar Presentation: NIT Trichy M.S. Research scholars upon completion are advised to present a seminar on their research and project. Seminars will be evaluated by the GTC members. They have the right to approve or disapprove of the seminar and presentation. Scholars need to have a thorough understanding of their research.
Synopsis of Thesis and Submission of Thesis
- Before the submission of the synopsis, scholars are required to present a seminar and shall acquire one paper in a Reputed journal or two papers in the same.
- On successful completion of the course, scholars shall submit ten copies of a synopsis of research work to the GTC.
- GTC will go through your thesis work and if approved, then they permit the scholar to submit the thesis and recommend a panel of at least six thesis examiners outside the Institute.
- Within three months of successful submission of synopsis, scholars have to submit four copies of the Thesis embodying the final results of research and also three copies of the Thesis of around 400 words.
Viva Voce and Award of MS Degree
- For the Viva Você after the successful submission of all the required files, a panel will be made to examine the scholars based on their thesis and research work and will evaluate them.
- All scholars are requested to submit one copy of the final form of the thesis in A4 size paper and pdf version.
- On the recommendation of the GTC panel and the Senate Myers will approve the degree and the research, the research scholar will be awarded the MS Degree.

NIT Trichy MS (By Research) Research Assistantship
- Half Time Research Assistantship is available to NIT Trichy MS (By Research) programs under various engineering departments.
- The scholarship award and the renewal of the assistantship program are dependent on the MHRD which changes from time to time.
- Those receiving the scholarship amount have to assist the department in their academic work for a minimum of about 8 hours a week.
- The institute organizes both sponsored as well as consultancy projects for the M.S. students.
- The stipend paid to NIT Trichy MS students ranges from INR 31,000 to INR 35,000 per month.
- The scholarship, assistantship will be awarded to scholars who are not funded by any other organization.

The fees can be filled in instalments or yearly. If you belong to reserved category such as OBC NCL, and your family income is less than 1 lac, then you can full remission of tuition fee. But if your family income is between 1 lac to 5 lacs, then you can get two third fee remission of tuition fees.
If any student wants to withdraw his admission, then he or she needs to fill in the admission cancellation/ discontinuing procedure, then have to submit the required form to the fee section for the refund of admission fee along with any other institute and library deposits.
To be eligible to take the NIMCET examination, you must have a B.Sc or BCA or BE/B.Tech degree from a recognized univesity with at least 60% marks in aggregate. You cannot take this examination after passing Class XII examination.
