As I'm pretty much good in biology i choose for biotechnology course. When it comes to the faculty most of them have done PhD in different subjects. We had enough of time to prepare for our term exams and also it was not that difficult to pass.
I have always been interested in biotechnology and the course at Manipal gave me a choice of multiple electives in the higher semesters. This gave rise to a flexible curriculum which I could select according to my interests. Considering the entirety of BTech Biotechnology (Year 1 to Year 4), the faculty: student ratio was approximately 1:12, which provided a great deal of mentorship and one on one guidance. The faculty at the department is highly qualified and pursues research as well. There are various fields being covered, ranging from drug delivery to fermentation. As for the evaluation, we had in-class assignments for 20 marks (4 assignments per subject, 5 marks each) and two 15 mark midterm examinations. For the end semester examination, there were written exams and practicals.
There are two sessionals held for internals and assignments held every other week. The sessionals are scored out of 15 marks each for each subject. There are four assignments for five marks each in-between.
Talking about the faculty at Manipal University, well they are among the best. All of them are highly qualified and always ready to help their students even beyond the four walls of the classrooms. The students- faculty relation here in Manipal is completely different. They will take complete responsibility of you. If you are not performing well in studies they will help you and guide you. They are always ready to help their students. One of the reasons behind this is the student-faculty ratio at Manipal. In recently released data by NIRF, Manipal has been said to have a better student to faculty ratio than most of the IITs, which gives them flexibility in personally helping and monitoring the progress of their students.
The fee structure is pretty high. This include fees for course and the mess food along with hostel accommodation. Though for localites it’s only the course fees to be worried of, but for others it’s everything. They made mess food compulsory since last year and hence fees structure seems very expensive.
The fee structure is slightly on the higher side but it is worth it. The course fee was 2.85 lakhs per annum when I joined. It might go up to 3.25-3.5 lakhs per annum based on the branch. The hostel cost varies according to the type of room. My room was a Double AC with an attached bathroom and it cost 1.2 lakhs per annum.
The tuition fees are 3.25 lakhs. The fees remain constant for all the 4 years. The hostel fees and mess fees are about 1.25 lakhs. The hostel fees vary for different types of hostels. The total fees for 4 years of undergraduate education are about 17 lakhs.
The present fee structure for Biotechnology is Rs 3,07,000 for the first year and rs 2,97,000 for the subsequent years. Hostel fees vary based on the hostel opted in the range of Rs 88,000 to Rs 1,50,000. It is inclusive of mess fees. All other expenses are optional.
Biotechnology is a budding branch that is good enough to get you working in the industry instead of the research field. The curriculum deals with industrial purposes like bioprocess engineering, design of industrial equipment,bio-reaction engineering, etc.
Despite the decent subject and scope, pursuing B.Tech biotechnology from Manipal University's main campus is not a wise thing to do. Here’s why
All in all, Manipal University's main campus provides good academics and learning experiences for the biotechnology branch. If you are interested in research, you can do a minor specialization in genetic engineering and pharmacy.
