Dislikes
- The hostels are a bit old so students might struggle to adjust
- The mess food is average and it is quite hard to survive on mess food alone
- The campus administration has a somewhat backward mindset like forcing compulsory attendance and not having enough attention on mental health of the students
Course Curriculum Overview
My JEE rank and my interest in physics helped me chose Mechanical Engineering. The curriculum might seem irrelevant for real world scenarios but it is on par for future academic pursuits. Most of the teachers use ppts for teaching which is quite for the student. I will prefer the old chalk and board method. The frequency of exams I feel is perfect.
Internships Opportunities
IT companies- Google, Microsoft, JP morgan, Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Quantbox, Quadeye, Alphagrep Stipend varies from 1 lac to 10 lac for 2 months. FMCG- ITC, HUL stipend is 4.5 lacs for 2 months. Many other companies visit the campus with a median stipend of 50k per month.
Placement Experience
From 7th semester the students are eligible for placements. Many Companies like Google, Microsoft, Quantbox, Adobe, JP Morgan come to our college and on an average hire 6-8 students per company. Average packages were around 15 LPA. More than 80% of the students who applied got placed. I will pursue MBA after my degree
Fees and Financial Aid
Overall fees including tuition fees(200000) + mess + hostel= 300000 per year Mess and Hostel are compulsory SC/ST Students are exempted from paying tuition fees. Total annual fees for general category= 300000 Total annual fees for SC/ST students=100000 James thomson scholarship is there for students have a JEE rank under 300. People from financially weak backgrounds are aided with scholarships and they follow same fees structure as SC/ST students. Many monetary benefits are there for academic and research excellence.
Campus Life
Thomso the cultural fest is held in October and Cognizance the technical fest is held in march. The library has a wide range of books be it technical or literature. The classrooms have ac and projectors within them. Most of the popular sports like cricket, football, taekwondo, swimming, squash, tennis, badminton have facilities in the campus.
Hostel Facilities
1st and 2nd year students live in shared rooms. From 3rd year onwards they get single rooms. The rooms are non ac with facilites like table, chair, almirah, bed and a fan. The mess food is just average with normal meals like dal, roti, sabzi and chawal. Registration is included in the course registration.
Admission
I got many colleges like IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi but in IIT Roorkee I found the best college and branch combinaton. IIT Roorkee offers admissions through JEE Advanced exam and after that jossa counselling.
Faculty
Student faculty ratio is quite good. Some faculties might seem busy and not approachable but most of them are. In mechanical department professors like Arup Kumar Das and Ankit Bansal are very good and quite approachable. We have two exams primarily Mid terms and End terms. Their difficulty in moderate sometimes easy and sometimes hard. Bottom 5-10 students are failed in these exams. The course structure might seem irrelevant in today's world
Night Life
Every hostel has its gym apart from that there a central gym which opens in the morning and evening. Library opens at 8 am in the morning and closes at 12 am in the night We have a CCD, amul outlet and a proper fine dine restaurant apart from the hostel canteens. There are no in timings in hostel and campus. As roorkee is in Uttarakhand students often visit places like dehradun, mussoorie, rishikesh.
