- The classrooms and laboratories here are the most amazing thing. We travel 1 km to Nalanda for our classes and it's infrastructure is amazing with capacity of around 2000 students at once. Rooms are amazing and filled with fresh air.
Dislikes
- The boys to girls ratio here at IIT Kharagpur is not that good unlike other colleges. On average, the ratio is 1:4 as one girl to every 4 boys. In our class, there re only 7 girls and 28 boys. So, this is the thing i disliked here.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am enrolled in Integrated masters applied geology course. The total duration of thsi course is 5 years and it's integrated Bsc + Msc. This branch is somewhat related to Earth Science and Astronomy, so I was inclined towards this course as i had interest since childhood. There are many research prospects in geology and indeed many professors as well as students have completed their proposals for international conference. The core subject area focuses on the concept on geology and earth science from scratch to advanced level, including Remote Sensing, geomorphology, Well logging etc. We have a total of 10 semesters here in our branch. Every semester, 2 major exams are conducted for marks evaluation - Midems conducted in Mid of the semesters and endsems conducted in the end. Endsems are comparatively tougher than midsems because of the inclusion of full syllabus. Professors can also take occasional surprise tests, and also evaluate final score on basis of attendance.
Internships Opportunities
In our college, the internship season starts after the end of second year for b.tech students and third year for dual degree students. Generally, we get time of around 3 to 4 months for preparation. Some students start during initial days for internship season. The internship online assessment rounds start from July every year anf go on till April next year. The companies come with variety of roles - Software, data analytics, AI/Ml, Consulting, product, UI/UX designing and much more. Many product based companies as well as service based companies come during internship season, incling Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, Zomato and much more. Many companies give pre-placement offers to selected students if they see the potential in them, even before the start of placement season. The first stage is generally online assessment rounds and coding rounds, and maybe GD rounds. Interviews start from August and the schedule is very tightly packed once the internship season starts,.
Placement Experience
Campus Placement season starts here in IIT Kharagpur in the end of the pre-final semester or the fisrt semester of the final year. Companies start visiting the campus in the month of December every year for Phase 1, and in January for Phase 2. Top Product based companies like - Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Samsung, Netflix, Uber, Zomato etc..come for placements and give high CTC like 40 LPA and even above for Software profiles. There are various profiles available in companies coming for placements - software, Data, machine Learning, Finance, Product, consulting, UI/UX designing and so on. Almost 80 % students get placed in our college every year and number of offers is as close as 1800 every year. Many students get pre-placement offers as well, after the completion of their internships and they are not eligible for placements. I am planning to sit for palcements this year and aiming for software, data analysis, consulting and UI/UX designing roles.

The total fees here at IIT Kharagpur is divided into 2 portions - semester fees and hostel fees. Semester fees is approximately 120000 per semester i.e, 240000 per year for genearl students and semester fees is zero for SC/ST students or PWD students. There is an option for fee waiver scholarship for economically waeker students. Meritirious and economically weaker students can avail benefits of scholarship.
Campus Life
Campus life here at IIT Kharagpur is the most amazing part that shapes our personality and memories with friends. With yearly fests, GC events, Open IIT tournaments, Inter IIT competitions, there are a lot of opportunities for students to excel in extracurricular fiels as well, and not get a monotonous life alone because of studies. The Infrastructure here is amazing. Central library is among the biggest across India, containing national digital libraray ( NDL ) and lakhs of books for students for all streams. Classrooms are fully ventilated with ACs and the design and interior view is so beautiful. Apart from this, there are occasional Inter hall competitions conducted between various halls in various sports like cricket, football, handball, kabaddi and much more. The winner teams get featured in Technology students gymkhana. There are many student led societies and clubs in our college, like E-cell, Adventure society, Coding club and much more that add value to our life here.
Hostel Facilities
I live in Rajendra Prasad hall of residence ( RP Hall ) in IIT Kharagpur. There are in total, 21 halls of residence out of which 4 are for girls and rest are for boys. There are separate halls for masters students and phd students. New halls are also built this year for MBA students and PGDBA students. Hostel rooms are good and contain various facilities like wi-fi, water coolers, beds, cupboard etc. There is a library in our hall as well, and apart from this we got big cricket and basketball grounds for inter block cricket match within the hall. Mess food is average to good. We get varities of food like chole bhature on saturady morning and eggs daily in breakfast including milk, bread, chowmein, idli, dosa, omlet etc. So, on avaerage mess food is good. Hostel fees is 40000 rupees per semester and it includes all charges like mess fees, hostel accomodation fees, internet fees etc. Every student here resides in a hall of residence, as there is no option to reside outside the campus.
Admission
I got admission in IIT Kharagpur in the year 2020 through JEE Advanced 2020. I got 114 marks in JEE and 11566 rank in JEE Advanced 2020. After the results were declared, I sat for JOSAA Counselling rounds, which were conducted in 6 total rounds. I had listed various colleges in the priority list. Luckily, I got Applied Geology in IIT Kharagpur in the final round. I was getting Earth Science branch in ISM Dhanbad but i was more inclined towards IIT Khargpur because of high exposure and best campus life. Because of low rank, I couldn't get branches like CSE, Electrical, ECE etc. Generally, in IITs the circuital branches get closed at 3000 rank in top IITs because of the best faculty and high demand and packages of circuital branch passouts. Every year, almost 16000 students get their dream IITs by securing a seat in the prestigious JEE Advanced. Generally, the cutoff for JEE Advanced for our branch is under 12000 rank at max.
Faculty
The faculty here at IIT Kharagpur are very smart people and also very supportive. In our department, there are a total of 60 students including geology and geophysics students and 12 professors teaching various subjects. There are aslo students in Msc and Phd as well as various years, so approx there would be 300 students and 12 professors handling everything. One of the best professors I loved being taught by - Saptarshi Dey Sir ( Geomorphology ), Saibal Gupta ( Introduction to Earth Science ), Sabyasachi Maiti ( Remote Sensing ). These professors are very supportive and their teaching methodology is amazing, unlike the traditional methods of teaching. They solely focus on practical learning via field trips. There are 2 big exams conducted here - Midsems and Endsems, and a number od assignments and other surprise tests on any random day chosen by professor. Almost every student passes the exams and only 1 or 2 get failed because of very poor attendance.
