A holistic review of VIT Chennai by a student

Dislikes

  • there are lot of rules and regulations in the college and often hostel students feel suffocated as you cant go out of hostel after 8 (for girls) and after 9(for boys).
  • you cant go out of college if you are hosteller without permission from your procter ( it is a faculty the is assigned to you when you join the college), and procter will call your parents before granting you permission.

Course Curriculum Overview :

the curriculam of VIT chennai is decent, not very good as such but its not the worst, its good that, they dont teach how to weld or how to do carpenting in first year as that is irrrevant to CSE and most of the branches. VIT also have mordern subjects that that are helpful in carrer like Fog and edge computing, cryptography, etc. If you dont learn anything extra other then collegs subjects and maintain your cgpa then also you will get a decent job during the placements, they also force students to write research papers and make innovatiive projects for internal marks, ( you cant make those regular projects that are available on internet as the faculty will not allow it and will not award you marks, I had to change my project in MPMC as it was already made few years back, we have 3 exams during the seamester, 2 CAT exams instead of misterm like other collges and then final sem exam, it gets pretty hectic and we have exams in every 5 weeks, and dont get time for other things.

Internships Opportunities :

I third year, students get email of internships form different companies and anyone can apply but usually only 9 pointers get industrial internships through college. other students get internships by themselves through other platforms. the companies are different every year and stiend also depends on companies, some are startups that are incubated in VIt that dosent offer any stipend. students are suggested to make good proects and attend hackathons inside and outsite the campus to make a good network and make good projects to stand out from the big crowd of vit as VIT is a pretty crowed college, about more than 2500 student are there only in CSe and other specialisation branches of CSE .

Placement Experience :

for getting on campus placements, you should not have any backlogs, and should have a decent cgpa to get a good placement, VIT is known for its good average package in placements, recently some students got placed in zomato with 50 LPA, placement of all the VIT campus take place together and more then 500+ companies. VIT also has a record of 100% placement all the students that sit in placement, get placed. I am also planning to sit in placements and get a job, but there are many students that opt for masters and MBA or go for off-campus placements either by choice or due to having backlogs. placemnts is the USP of VIT nad students choose VIT instead of some IIITs and NITs due to placements .

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

there are 5 categories of tutions fees in VIT which depends on your VITEEE rand anc cutoff of your selected branch, like I got 2 category for CSE branch and it has fees of 3 L per anum, and 3rd, 4th and 5th category have fees of 4 , 4.5 and 4.9 lakh per anum, which is pretty high for engineering college, If you get 1st of 2nd category , then it is fine but not worth if for 3rd, 4th and 5th category. the hostel fees is also very high, as they are converting almost all non AC rooms to AC rooms which are not worth it for their price, for example 4 bed AC room is 107000 rs for academic year, without mess charges, if you wants nonveg mess then it is charged at 86k , tution fees is fixed but hostel and mess fees are increased everying year to some extent ( roughly 10k for both mess and hostel). ther are not campus employment for UG students and very less support for poor students as scolerships, but you will easily get 7.5 L of loan from banks for VIT college.

Campus Life :

VIT has 2 major fest, one is Vibrance , that is our cultural fest and then technoVIT , that is our tech fest where clubs organize various events and students from other colleges are also allowed to participate in events during technoVIT, but they are not allowed during Vibrance. there are more then 100 clubs in VIT and during technovit and vibrance there are more than 300events are organized there also clubs related to social service , technical clubs, cultural clubs related to different stated of india, and hobbie clubs like anime club etc. . sports are also offered in VIT but they are not as active as in other universites due to academics. the library of VIT is also pretty good, it have books related to all the topics useful for academics and also have books related to other topics like fictional novels, self help books, language books and books related to other sujects that are not offered in VIt, like astronomy ans theoritical physics etc,

Hostel Facilities :

hostel of vit is decent , it is pretty clean hostel but price is expensive, like 59 thousand for 4 bed Non AC room and 78 k for veg mess, the food is nice but depend on hostel block as every block has 2 different caterer. I live in A block and it has FFCL and CRCL, and both of them has a good food. there are four options to choose in mess (veg, nonveg, special, and food park). food park is the most expensive with fees of 1.02 Lakhs per anum. for new people, you wil get the email for hostel registrations that is done online through a website. and for seniors, hostel allotment is dont on the basis of hostel rank, better rank people will get their choice of room alloted with their choice of roomates as many times, people of lower get random type of room alloted with random people as their choice of room often gets filled before. VIT dont allow students to leave hostel without proof of parents living with them and they hace to come to hostel and sign with proper docs .

Admission :

For getting addmission in VIT chennai , you have to attempt VITEEE entrance exam, you can take addmission in any branch of VIT with VITEEE. you can find the form of Viteee on website of vellore institute of technology, and exam is usually in month of april, it is a objective type CBT paper, and dont have any negative marking . they dont reveal the exact process of finalising the Rank . it is not an easy exam, and more the 2 L people give it per year, you have to get less very good rank to get good branch in VIT chennai, for example, I got 10500 rank and got CSE core 2nd category in VIT chennai, you can give exam from any city as it is a All India exam and have exam centers all over india, after getting your rank, you have to sit in councelling and fill a priority list of your branch and VIT campus you want to choose, ( vellore, chennai, bhopal, amrawati) and your preferend fee category, on the basis of your rank and priority list you will get a campus and fee category.

Faculty :

VIT Chennai has a pretty good faculty base, it has about 1000 faculty for 20K students that will be 1:20 ratio, the faculties here are well qualified and has a pretty good knowledge about their subjects, many of them have have P.hd from very reputed universites and have published many research papers, VIT have pretty good base interms of publishing pretty good research papers in every department . many of faculties can be easily found of google scholer and even in news articles for getting awards. the learning experience is also very nice for me, as I never got a bad facutly in any subject but students often get rude faculties who are pretty strict and dont even allow boys and girls to sit together, and they also force force students to make projects and research papers for internal marks, which is nice but gets very hectic if more then 2 faculy ask you to write reacher paper in a same semester. Overall most if the faculties are pretty nice here except few of them.
