- The overall peer group you get in IITs is just next level compared to other colleges. If you want to learn any new thing, you can get a senior or a batchmate who would be already good at it.
- The societies in IIT Kharagpur are ample in number and very well maintained. You can join join any society that interests you and then they'll help you go deeper.
Dislikes
- The hostels are pretty old. The rooms are pretty small to live in and study. The common washrooms are not that good and sometimes they smell really badly.
- As the peer group is pretty nice, you need to study pretty hard to maintain your grades and to get a good cgpa. Some professors teach things well but some don't. It becomes tough at times to comprehend things taught in the classroom.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The courses are well designed and in deep. The exams are divided into internals, mid-semester examination and end semester examination. The internals for every subject is taken in a different way. Some have class tests whereas some have tutorial tests. Mid-semester and End-semester examinations are common for all the students. Some of the courses are useful for further studies and job but not all of them are. Courses like programming, mathematics have very much relevance to the future but courses like Physics, Biology are just good for them who want to pursue/research in those subjects.
Internships Opportunities :
The college offers internship after the 3rd year of a BTech course. The internship is offered after the respective companies shortlist the students after the interviews are held. The companies which gave internships this year were Goldman Sachs, Honeywell, BCG, American Express, Zomato, Microsoft, IBM, etc. The various roles were Finance, Banking, Analytics, Software Development, Consulting, etc.
Placement Experience :
The general placements of IITs is comparitively way better than other government and private colleges. Many companies come to recruit students. Even top companies such as Goldman Sachs, Apple come to IIT campuses. The placement takes place in two phases. The first phase starts around November - December and ends around early February. The second phase takes place during the summers. The average package of my branch i.e. Mechanical Engineering was 18 lakhs whereas the median package was 21 lakhs.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
The fee structure of IIT Kharagpur is well curated. The fees is pretty decent compared to other colleges. The total fees for 4 year BTech course comes to around 13-14 lakhs. There are many number of scolarships available for top performing students who dont come for well earning backgrounds. These scholarships are a huge boon for these students. There is financial assistance available for students as well. You need to submit supporting documents to the concerned authorities and they would help you with the futher process. I dont have much idea about campus employment oppurtunities but definitely when you move to senior years, you could get under a professor and work as a teaching asisstant which gets you a decent amount of stipend.
Campus Life :
The overall campus of IIT Kharagpur is just amazing. There are a lot of oppurtunities to learn as well as to have fun. The cultural fest of IIT Kharagpur is Spring Fest held during the end of January, the tech fest is Kshitij held during mid January and the sports fest is Shaurya held during October. The library of IIT Kharagpur is just immense and never ending. It has over a lakh books and is the home to many of us during the mid semesters and the end semesters especially. All the classrooms are air-conditioned, 4 set of blackboards, projector screens and projector. Facilities for badminton, lawn tennis, table tennis, swimming, etc are present on the campus and can be accessed very easily. There are various student run clubs such as the Bussiness Club, Encore (English Dramatics Club), Pravah (Hindi Dramatics Club), etc which provide ultimate learning experiences who have interest in it.
Hostel Facilities :
For the first year I was alloted the Gokhale Hall of Residence. The rooms provided were majorly triple sharing whereas some rooms were double sharing and four-sharing too. The rooms were just enough to satisfy your day to day needs and there is no expectation of luxury in these rooms. Most of the hostels have common washrooms but luckily I had attached washroom. The mess is below average and you should not keep minimal expectations from the mess food. Although, the registration process for the hostel is pretty smooth and its just a 10 minute paper work. The hostel fees for a whole semester is approximately 30,000 which is pretty affordable according to me.
Admission :
The admission process into IITs is pretty smooth. You fill your choices through the JOSAA Portal and then you get the choice according to your rank. The examination you need to give to get into IITs is the JEE Advanced Examination. To appear for this examination, you need to qualify the JEE Mains Examination. The cutoff for clearing JEE Advanced was around 80 marks out of 360 marks. I scored a total of 175 Marks in my JEE Advanced 2023 Exam. I got an All India Rank of 2948. The cutoff for my branch i.e. IIT Kharagpur Mechanical Engineering was arond 3200. The aspect of the admission that I didnt like at all was the unexpectancy of the cutoffs. According to the last year's data, I was getting IIT Kanpur Mechanical which had a cutoff of 3155. I was pretty sure before hand that I would get into IIT Kanpur but at the last moment, to my surprise, I missed the IIT Kanpur Mechanical Engineering cutoff by mere 8 ranks!
Faculty :
The faculties of IIT Kharagpur are highly qualified according to me. Their graduations and research just blows up my mind sometimes. But a good subject knowledge and a good research into the subject doesnt always mean that he/she will teach the subject that well. Well, thats not the case with most of the faculties, but some faculties are not that good in communicating the subjects. For the first year classes, we had common courses for all the students and thus, the faculty to student ratio was pretty low. For the theory classes we had 1 faculty for approximately 180 students and for lab courses, we had 1 faculty for around 90 students. Although, the nice part was that we had TAs assigned for around 45 students, who were PhD students and could help us clear our doubts. The maximum interaction I had with my teachers was either during the lecture or through mails. They were very approachable and always available on mail for any issue.
