My experience with NIT Durgapur

Dislikes

  • The curriculum feels vast sometimes and the lab and assignments makes it even worse
  • Sometimes hostels are not properly maintained and that leads to chaos

Course Curriculum Overview :

I chose civil engineering over other streams is the real life application and innovative approach of the subject. Faculty involved in this stream are highly qualified, always cheerful and have a positive outlook towards their students. One will be able to grasp the concepts way too easily due to their lucid style of teaching. In civil engineering 2020-24 batch the student ratio is approximately 22 female to 51 male and this ratio is more or less consistent throughout the years. So, there were two exams in a semester namely midterm and Endterm along with continous assessment throughout the semester. Midterm is of 25 marks and end term is of 60 marks rest includes in Continous assessment. Question in exams are in accordance to what is being taught in the class and if one regularly follows the course passing the course is a cakewalk.

Internships Opportunities :

In the non core streams one of generally exposed to lot of companies which comes during the 5th 6 th semester. For core students they have limited opportunities but the college provides a vocational training opportunity for those who are unable to procure an offer. You need to mandatorily complete the tasks to get the certificate and also provide a presentation for that. Projects are generally assigned during 7th semester and you need to complete as per your project guide

Placement Experience :

From 6th semester you are eligible to sit for the internships whichever are available to you. You need to mandatorily do a vocational training after completion of 6th semester. There are various companies which visits the campus namely L&T, Afcons, ITD cementation, BPCL, ZS etc which provides an offer ranging from 6 -20 Lakhs per annum. Almost 60% of the students finally able to secure the offer in Civil engineering course. I am currently placed in BPCL through campus and I am hopeful to serving there for a while

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

So there are three income slabs 0-1 lakh, 1-5 lakh,5 lakh onwards in every category fees are different. For first slab it is about 13000, 2nd slab it is 34000, for last slab it is 76000. It is compulsory to submit income certificate during admission signed by the authority. There are various scholarship which involves Vivekananda scholarship, OPJEMS scholarship for toppers of every stream and other scholarships too which provides certificates and stripend to the deserving candidates. One needs to look up for the notifications whenever they are released.

Campus Life :

The annual fest conducted here is named as Recstacy which is conducted by student gymkhana in the month of April. The tech fest (Aarohan) here is conducted by collaboration of various clubs in the month of March. There are vast kinds of books available in library and very helpful for the students. Classrooms are well furnished and compatible with the modern technology. There is a dedicated Students Activity Centre where you can practice badminton and there are two huge playgrounds where various sports activities are always going on. Major sports equipments are available on request and if excelled you can participate in the various sports of Inter NIT. There are various social groups which includes CCA,Spicmacay, Quizinc, Tech and maths club, Recursion namely few and lots of them. You can take part in any of the group of various disciplines and participate in college fests and of other colleges too

Hostel Facilities :

There are 14 hostels 3 are designated for females and rest are for males. They are spread throughout the campus. Rooms are spacious and you will be paired up with 1,2 of your classmates. You need to abide by all the rules and regulations of the hostel and violation of that may lead to suspension. Meals are delicious and healthy to eat they organize for special dinner every Wednesday which are very delightful to eat. Registration is automatically done when you pass the semester you just need to go your alloted hostels and talk with the warden for the arrangements. As the hostels are in college so it's closer to the classrooms and saves time

Admission :

I have applied for this college after attaining a rank of 51374 at JEE Mains 2020. I applied through JOSAA and CSAB and got this seat at the 1st round itself of CSAB. The application form is through JOSAA and CSAB and payment is through their platform. After confirmed selection you are requested to visit the college website regularly for any updates. There you need to upload all the documents in order to confirm your selection. Yes, there is provision for reservation for OBC, SC, ST, Pwd and female candidates. They follow other perks also which includes a lower fees at the college. The process involved for the admission is quite transparent and the admission is confirmed only after rigorous scrutiny from the administration.

Placement Experience:

At the end of the 6th Semester many MNCs and startups like CTS, TCS, Virtusa, Wipro, etc visit our campus for internship opportunities as well as pre-placement offers. Most of the students do crack some or other internship opportunities and get in-hand industry experience. For our batch the highest offer we received is 7LPA and the average package ranges at about 4.5 - 3.5LPA ! Almost everyone does get placed, but the average ranges at about 70%-80%.

The area Berhampur has some communication issues, you can only get connected with Kolkata. College is also too small in size. Labs can be better. The money, which is coming from the government, is not utilised perfectly. Other things are good here.
