Jadavpur University: Why Not?

Remarks :

To start with the admission process after the XIIth standard, I had opted for many government-aided colleges like Lady Brouborne College which offered honors subjects. But due to issus regarding premises surroundings and hygiene safety, I had to cancel my admission. I had also opted for Chem. honors in Saint Xavier's college, Kolkata, but I didn't get my name listed in the first counselling, and by the time I got selected in the second counselling, I had already secured a place in Jadavpur Univeristy in B.Sc. Maths. honors and also availed an SC quota. The admission criteria for my prgram was to have secured an aggregrate of 85% in all the subjects Physics, Math and Chemistry, and the preference was taken on the basis of percentage availed in Mathematics. The minimum age for applying for this program was 17 years, according to what i remember. The admission process went in a very processive and curative manner. Our documents were analysed properly and the admission fee was pretty low.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I chose Math honors because I had always wanted to study higher mathematics, but I wasn't aware of the hardcore curriculum. The bachelor's degree is very research-oriented; it will create a firm base for you. Currently, as I am pursuing a Master's degree in the same branch, from the same university, the curriculum has become very flexible and favorable as it has now opened gates for me to study and explore the use of Mathematics more in the industrial sector. This is such a plus point of Jadavpur Univerisity. The faculty-student ratio is very small in my department, probably 1:18. The faculty here is, as expected, of high altitude. With the finest academic background and deep-rooted research history, their teaching can be difficult for below-average students to understand. Also, they lack in giving apt time to the students sometimes. The exams are taken as per the schedule and if only your core knowledge is intact, then only it is easy to "pass". Nothing helps else!

Internships Opportunities :

The internship sector is often limited to arts and engineering faculty. They have summer and fall internships and some departments also consider internships as semester curriculum. The Architecture department for example, has its one whole year curriculum biased to one-year internship.

Placement Experience :

The placement committee is working hard in the science department recently, besides engineering and arts. The students in their last year or previous year of graduation are eligible for placements. The science faculty has recently linked with AI companies like Bridge i2i, tech companies like TCS and Infosys, and banks like the CITI bank. One student has already secured her placement in the CITI bank. The engineering department is visited by frequent companies like NTPC, SAIL, Mahindra, Google, Microsoft, Compass, Ranbaxy and other prestigious MNCs and international enterprises. Almost 78% of the students get hired in on-campus recruitments and the average package is 6-7lpa in science and 12-13lpa in engineering. After completing my Master, I am thinking of getting a one-year job experience and then, opting for M.Tech.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

Jadavpur University has always been lenient about its fee structure. The bachelor degree fee hike was too low, 1500-2000/- per annum. Due to this pandemic situation, the university decided to cut down all the fees to zero, that is, no fee required. There are some scholarships provided for the students but that particularly stands for some special cases, such as the Inspire scholarship that my department holds. This scholarship provides financial assistance to the selected candidates of a stipend of about 60k per annum. This scholarship is given on the basis of marks obtained, financial background. We have a Placement Committee on our campus. I am the Department Placement Coordinator of my department (Maths). We contact the HRs of companies and entrepreneurship to conduct on-campus recruitments and recently, a student from my department was already got hired by the CITI Bank.

Campus Life :

We have an annual fest in mid-March for all the three main streams, Science, Engineering and Arts, and is known as the "Sanskriti" Fest. The engineering faculty also conduct a tech-fest called "Srijani", every year. They also conduct other programs like The Hult Prize. Similarly, the science faculty seminars by various renowned professors and professionals. The Art faculty has its own which started recently. The university has a Central Library which is the common library for all the departments. It also has started digital library quite sooner. The publishes and journals by the professors and research scholars of our own university are placed in dignity here. The classroom amenities are a sector which needs a high survelliance sooner. It is a challenge here. Sports and extra curricualr activites is the most liberal sector; has ample space for hangouts and ambiance. There are various clubs run by students like the Painting Club, Science, Photography, MUN and TED Talks.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I love mathematics from school level. I wished to student this subjet in future and after scoring good in class 12 I took decision to study mathematics from krishnagar government college. Teachers made it easy to chose to study msc then. In msc semester exams after 4/5 months are really difficult to study, but you have to compromise with situation ,nothing to do.

Placements opportunity are actually very good in this college. For UG-courses, students are eligible from the 5th semester and for PG courses, from the 3rd semester onwards, they are eligible for on-campus placements. Many good companies visit campus. All the details are available on the website. The placement cell is very active and ensures a higher number of placements.

Placement Experience:

From Last semester students are eligible for appearing in campus placements. In our time that is 2021, there is not a single company visited to offer jobs in our department. But, in previous years Dr. Reddy's, Cipla, Sun Pharma, etc companies visited. Our just previous batch got approx 4 LPA packages on average.

Lots of positives are there to say regarding JU. It's the premier institution in West Bengal and perhaps entire eastern India for a reason. The free thinking, diversity, tolerance, political consciousness which it imbibes into its students is something everyone of them will fondly cherish when they will set foot out of those beloved gates for one last time.

Overall experience is good. Campus is good too. But some of the departments should be taken care of too. They are worst and after some time courses are stopped. Instead care should have taken.
