Remarks :
My experience during 2005-09 stint at this college was great and the college management albeit slowly is transforming the college which will help take the college to greater heights.
Entrance Preview :
I know that the examination one has to clear to get into a NIT has undergone changes, so please check web for latest information on examination. But back in 2005 when I took admission at VNIT Nagpur one had to write the AIEEE .I think this has now been replaced by JEE (Main).
Internships Opportunities :
Yes the college does provide internships after the 6th semester (end of third year). The college has tie ups with both government and pvt companies.Internships are again merit based and availability based.I did my internship at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) Trombay in May-June 2008.I was at Research reactor and maintenance division .This was however an unpaid internship but the experience gained was great especially for a fresher.
Placement Experience :
Probably the most important question since that is the main reason why many of us join engineering.Being a NIT the college offered good package at the time. The average package for the batch of 09 was around 3-4 lakh per annum (lpa) with 100% placements. Both government companies and pvt companies had come for placements. This however had changed in recent time where govt jobs are now only through GATE.We had around 8-10 companies in the dream job segment for mech dept meaning companies that offered more than 5 lpa. I was placed at Bajaj Auto ltd which offered 5.5lpa .The highest package in our batch on campus was around 8 lpa.
College Events :
Being an NIT you have students from different states and different backgrounds which makes the campus life quite diverse. The cultural festival of the college was called Aarohi and the was the largest cult fest in central India. The technical festival was called "AXIS" and also had participants from across the country.I remember getting 2nd prize in the paper presentation in AXIS 2007.The prize money was good too. There were a lot of other events both cultural and technical that helped us maintain a vibrant campus life.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
That was reasonable , definitely especially when you compare to pvt colleges the fess that was there in VNIT Nagpur for years 2005-09 was Rs 15000/- per year towards academic/tuition/library etc and. Then again I was a hostelite so the hostel fees was Rs 9000/- per yr and mess fees was Rs 7000 per year. This figures show that they were very reasonable when compared to pvt college at that time. Now however even these have increased exponentially.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Yes there was scholarships available the college provided scholarships to those from economically weak background there was OP Jindal scholarships, which was a merit based scholarship and the amount I remember was equal to the college fees for the year.
Campus Life :
As I have mentioned before that VNIT Nagpur being a NIT has students from a diverse background staying on the campus the hostel life actually prepares you for the professional life where people from different places actually have to work together as a team.Your peer group can have great influence on your life decisions this can however be both positive or negative. However there is one factor that is probably still common on most engineering colleges in the country that is sex ratio this is deplorable in mechanical it was even worse in our batch of 63 students there was one female student.
Hostel Facilities :
The hostel facilities were great however the mess food was one bone of contention between the students and the college authorities .The food quality was simply not good. Especially in the first year or every time one came back from home after a break the mess food was one constant source of complain among all students.
Alumni/Alumna :
VNIT Nagpur has a very strong alumni network many of the students who have passed out from this college during 80s and 90s are are now at the top of their respective fields and they have still kept in touch with our alma mater. In fact they have started a mentorship programme which has been a great success. One of the alumini has even gifted a decommissioned Mig-21 fighter plane to the college. This is kept near the acad block near the main entrance.
Exam Structure :
Well it was hectic closer to the exams but we did find time to chill out as well. The subject was for 100 marks which was divided into 2 mid sems of 15 marks each and one 10 mark class test or assignment. The remaining 60 marks were for the end semester examination.that used to be for 3 hrs and many of times caused sleepless night out before the exams.
Admission :
Well after the results of the AIEEE were out , there was a round of central counselling in which one had to give a list of colleges along with departments in which one wanted to seek admission. At least the procedure was online and was held at VNIT Nagpur itself for the students of Maharashtra students all over the country had to go the nearest NIT for central counselling. The process in which you had to give your preference of dept/college and based on your AIR and then depending upon the availability you would be allotted a seat in the list of your preferred dept/college.
Faculty :
I will keep my comments restricted to the mech department faculty since I had most interactions with them. However it was the general view that the faculty of Mech dept at VNIT Nagpur during 2005-2009 was great and were most committed .I can say this because I remember we had classes even during weekends when people from other departments were enjoying.I remember that we had professors who actually made us focus on application of theory rather than the theory itself.
