First of all, to clear any misconceptions, IIITH, IIITD and IIITA are not connected in any manner. Out of the three, only IIIT Allahabad is a member of the actual collective known as the IIITs.

The common public doesn’t know much about these prestigious colleges. Consequently, they aren’t valued as much as the IITs and NITs. Here are the reasons why-

  1. All these institutes offer very few branches, which are mostly IT related.
  2. They aren’t as old as some of the IITs and NITs. They were set up even after IIT Guwahati, which is the 7th IIT in terms of establishment year.
  3. They don’t possess big campuses and a vast infrastructure.

But those who belong to the field of engineering (especially IT), give high ratings to these institutions, especially IIIT Hyderabad. These three offer research oriented academics. They even offer UG research programs.

IIIT Hyderabad, Delhi and Allahabad are performing really well in their respective fields. They should be given much more attention.

Any institute’s reputation is built by its alumni. IIITs are established later compared to all major technological institutes in the country. This is perhaps the major reason why IIITs are underrated. IIIT Allahabad and IIIT Hyderabad are around 20+ years old. In spite of being comparably new, IIIT Allahabad is constantly ranked among the top technological institute in the country for IT.

The society we live in is still obsessed with the “IIT” fame. Having an extra ‘I’, IIITs have not yet made their names so much into the minds of people. There are several factors to the cause, and some of them are listed below.

  • Institutes like IIIT Hyderabad are excellent in terms of facilities and placement in most departments, as compared to IITs, NITs, and BITs. Just because IIIT has not established its brand so much yet, IIIT Hyderabad has not achieved that status of glory.
  • Though IIITs are considered to be underrated, getting a seat there, especially IIIT Hyderabad is difficult. The cut-offs in JEE Main and Advance for IIIT Hyderabad are very high, even more than some IITs and most NITs. It is considered to be one of the best institutes for Computer Science, which is evident from its placement, GSoC entries, competitive programming participations, etc.
  • Though the reviews of IIIT Delhi given by students and alumni during admission sessions are found overrated, the institute has grown to a tremendous extent in the last 10-11 years and so, the cut-offs are found close to DTU and NSIT.
  • The IIITs are comparatively newer than most established institutes. IIIT Hyderabad is the oldest and has crossed the 20-year mark. So, most IIITs have a lack of exposure due to their age constraint.
  • Some IIITs such as IIIT-H (ICT Research University) are mostly known as research institutes. So, they are considered to be better for an academic prospect, and not an industrial exposure for placement.

Even after the above facts, institutes like IIIT-H, IIIT-D, etc have excellent faculty, course content, and facilities for students. These factors play a huge role in the overall development and opportunities in the industry. This is making a change in the perspectives of people and so, the growing popularity of IIITs is visible.
