Which one is better: IIT Delhi or IIT Roorkee?

SM
Sahil Metha Posted On : June 24th, 2024
Studied MBA at IIT Roorkee (Graduated 2021)

If I leave my biases towards Delhi as a city aside. I would choose IIT Roorkee over IITD.

Here are some reasons in support of my decision:-

  • Top 5 IITs are more or less equal in every aspect. Placements are also almost the same for equivalent branches.
  • IIT Roorkee is ranked 5th in the NIRF ranking while IIT Delhi is Ranked 2nd.
  • IIT Roorkee has better infrastructure compared to IIT Delhi.
  • The campus size of IIT Roorkee is 358.5 acres compared to IIT Delhi's 325 acres.
  • IIT Roorkee has a strong alumni base due to its 177-year history.
  • IIT Roorkee has a Median Package of 20 LPA with IIT Delhi at 20.5 LPA.
  •  IIT Roorkee is also famous for its sports champs at Inter IITs and various other competitions.
  • IIT Roorkee provides the best administration and highly experienced faculty.

I left IIT Patna electrical and electronics for IIT Roorkee civil. Did I make the right decision?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : June 21st, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Yes, you certainly made the right decision by choosing IIT Roorkee over IIT Patna. The biggest reason for saying this is that IIT Roorkee is an older IIT, thus having better opportunities, alumni, and experienced faculty. The career opportunities and exposure rendered by an old IIT cannot be compared to that of a new IIT. Irrespective of the branch you choose, old IITs will help you develop as a person.

Additionally, the IIT Roorkee Civil Engineering branch is considered one of the best Civil branches in India.

Many students prefer average branches like Mechanical and Civil at old IITs to top branches like CSE and EEE at new IITs. So go for IIT Roorkee without any second thoughts.

How is the life of an Mtech student in IIT Roorkee?

RB
Riddhima Banerjee Posted On : April 11th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

Usually, people who have completed their bachelor's from Non-IIT colleges join IIT for the MTech program. IIT Roorkee has a very less workload in comparison to other IITs. The M.tech in Computer Science and Engineering can be summarized semester-wise in the following manner

1st Semester

  • There are 4 subjects in all
  • There are two labs namely, Programming Lab and Project Lab
  • Each subject has 3-4 classes while every lab has 1 period weekly.
  • You will be allowed to sit for interviews for internships at top companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, IBM, Qualcomm, CISCO, and many more.
  • Thomso, the much-awaited cultural fest held during October is a very intriguing and exciting event
  • There are no TA duties
  • The exams are relatively easy and your semester is over once you are done with your exams

2nd Semester

  • The second semester has 4 subjects with no labs at all
  • You are required to conduct a Literature Review of your semester work and you will be assigned a guide from you department under whom you will be working at least 2 of the courses will have projects as well
  • Instead of the cultural fest, you will enjoy a tech fest this year
  • No TAs duties are assigned
  • The exams are not very competitive and one can easily pass with enough preparation.

3rd Semester

  • The 3 semester is the life-changing and shaping semester as you will have to start preparing for summer internships.
  • Although the companies visit during Oct-Nov-Dec, the preparation starts well before summer.
  • The workload is less as students are allowed to focus more on placements
  • The first week of December witnessed 100% placements while some even got PPOs.

4th Semester

  • This is the most exciting and thrilling semester as you get to explore new things.
  • You are required to complete your thesis

Which is better in terms of placements and all: IIT Roorkee chemical or IIT BHU chemical? Which has more liberal branch change rules: IIT Roorkee or IIT BHU?

N
Nisha Posted On : July 2nd, 2024
student at IIT Roorkee

I am a second year Chemical Engineering student at IIT Roorkee. Both IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU offer top notch placements. However, IIT Roorkee Chemical is a better option because of these reasons-

  • The NIRF Engineering ranking 2023 of IIT Roorkee is 5, while that of IIT BHU is 15.
  • IIT Roorkee has a stronger alumni network than IIT BHU. This can be beneficial for placements, internships, and career guidance.

The 2023 placement statistics of IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU are given below:

Parameters IIT Roorkee Overall IIT BHU Chemical
Placement Percentage - (63 Recruiters, 500 offers) 86.43%
Median CTC - INR 16.18 LPA
Average CTC - INR 19.52 LPA
Highest CTC INR 1.3 CPA (domestic)
INR 1.06 CPA (international)
INR 1.68 CPA (overall)
INR 1.15 CPA (Chemical)

(The branch-wise placement data for IIT Roorkee is not available).

The branch change policies are based on the academic performance of the students in their first year and the availability of seats in the desired branch. These are the branch change rules at IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU:

IIT Roorkee- A 9.0 or above CGPA is required for a branch change at IITR. Another thing is that the strength of the new branch should not increase by more than 10%. Moreover, the strength of the original branch must not fall by more than 25% of its existing strength.

IIT BHU- For IIT BHU, the required CGPA for branch change is around 8.5 to 9.0. IIT BHU might have a slightly more flexible approach, but it mainly depends on the number of students applying for the branch change and their respective CGPAs. Some branches may restrict the number of students who can transfer in.

Seat availability in the desired branch is a critical factor for branch switch at both institutions. IIT BHU might have a slightly more relaxed approach for branch change. But overall, switching a branch at both these IITs is a difficult task.

Why is IIT Roorkee not considered good for computer science?

SM
Soumyadeep Mahapata Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

IIT Roorkee is a renowned institution for engineering and technology, but its reputation for CS may not be as strong as other institutions. This is mainly due to a lack of resources, a limited number of faculty members with expertise in computer science, or a lack of emphasis on computer science. Here are a few pointers regarding the CS department of IIT Roorkee

  • The peer group consists of top rankers and there is intense competition as almost everyone is a genius
  • IIT Roorkee’s CS department is understaffed with limited faculty whose area of expertise is CS. Also, the existing professors and their pedagogy are not unique in any way.
  • Although the computer center is decent, the lab facilities are very poor and need to be taken care of

It’s better you lower your expectations before joining the CS department of IIT Roorkee, especially in terms of research. The professors here have limited knowledge and you won’t find them very helpful. You will have to develop your interest and pursue them individually. You will have to even learn coding yourself as most professors are unaware of the basic know-how. Competitions like ICPC, and GSOC are not supported by the Management and you will have to build and team yourself and work on it.

The placements are pretty good with most top companies visiting the campus with good packages. However, you are given the least assistance in placements and will have to prepare everything yourself. Ultimately you will depend most on your peers for everything.

My brother recently completed his graduation from IIT Roorkee and was all praise for the food served at the hostel mess.

Breakfast: The breakfast served at IIT Roorkee’s Rajendra Bhavan comprises bread, jam every day, an option between egg and butter, and any item like Paratha, Maggi, pasta, or poha depending on the menu. Occasionally, sprouts, watermelon slices, and papaya pieces are also served.

Wednesday and Sunday night special meals are served, including Paneer Butter Masala or Chilli Paneer served with Gulab Jamun or Ice cream. On occasions like Dussehra, Naan, and Paneer curry are served.

Which one is better: taking mechanical engineering at IIT BHU or civil engineering in IIT Roorkee?

H
Harsh Posted On : July 3rd, 2024
student at IIT Roorkee

I am a B.Tech Civil student at IIT Roorkee. Here’s a comparison between the two options-

Parameters IIT Roorkee Civil IIT BHU Mechanical
Average Package INR 18 LPA INR 21.95 LPA (around 80% students get placed)
Top Recruiters on campus Larsen, Turbo, Tata, Sprinklr, Jio, L&T, Godrej, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Zepto, Google, Jaguar Land Rover. Amazon, American Express, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Google, ITC Ltd., Microsoft, Oracle, Paytm, etc.
Research Facilities One of the best research facilities at the Civil Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee. Ample research opportunities and well-equipped laboratories.

One important thing that my friends told me is that the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT BHU is one of the strictest departments in India. It makes the students question their own potential. The department professors are very strict and the coursework is extremely rigorous. The students are given assignments and projects which they have to complete within a day.

I would suggest you choose IIT Roorkee Civil as it offers the same facilities and placements as IIT BHU Mechanical. Moreover, the Civil department at IITR is not as strict as the Mechanical department at IIT BHU.

The JEE Advanced cutoff for every branch and college fluctuates yearly but the trend followed remains the same. The students instead of analyzing their own inclinations, look up the previous year's cutoff list to decide the choice of college and branch. This is a good method for those who are unaware of their passion and yet want to aim high

The previous years’ cutoff IIT Roorkee cutoff of JEE Advanced for reference from the tables given below.

What is better, BITS Pilani or IIT Roorkee?

RM
Rajashree Mukharjee Posted On : April 12th, 2023
M.Tech Control Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2021)

It is difficult to say which is better, BITS Pilani or IIT Roorkee, as they are both highly respected institutions in India. Both universities have strong programs in engineering, technology, and science.

However, BITS Pilani is known for its focus on undergraduate education, while IT Roorkee is known for its research programs. Yet if I was to choose one, I would have chosen BITS Pilani for BTech

  • You are free to opt for minors in finance or humanities and even take subjects from different branches of your interest provided that you clear the minimum credits for an engineering degree in the branch you are pursuing currently.
  • The attendance rules are very flexible giving students time to focus on their interests or even become an entrepreneur.
  • You get the opportunity to get employed in a top-notch industry of your choice apart from the placement offer from the institute as an internship in the final semester where chances of getting a job offer are very high.
  • The Placement scenario is much better at BITS Pilani than at IIT Roorkee

However, if you are someone who is interested in MTech in core branches or is inclined towards research work, then IIT Roorkee has a better research culture. Moreover, the extremely high fees at BITS Pilani might be a demotivating factor for many making IIT Roorkee a much better choice.
