Jammu University Final Semester Exam Starts September 15, Decision comes after SC Order

Jammu University will be conducting end semester exams for all UG courses offered by the university from September 15, 2020. The university has released an official notification stating the same.

As per the notice, Jammu University will only conduct examinations in the conventional method (that is, pen-paper mode). The official notification states, “It is notified for the information of all the end/terminal semester students of Undergraduate courses (Non-professional) that their theory examinations shall commence from 15th September 2020. 

The exams are being conducted as per the directions of the UGC and the Supreme Court of India. The University of Jammu, while taking the opinion of the nodal principals of all the colleges (which falls under the jurisdiction of the Jammu University).

It has been decided that the end semester examinations shall be conducted through the conventional mode (pen and paper) with the following relaxation: that, as an onetime exception due to the prevailing situation, the students shall have to attempt only 40 per cent of the total number of questions asked from the entire paper irrespective of the Units/Sections as may appear in their question paper.”

Dr Vinay Thusoo, Jammu University, Spokesperson asserted, “We will implement all the necessary guidelines. The sitting arrangement will be such that proper social distancing will be maintained at the exam centres. Students must not worry. We are very much aware of their concerns.”

The notification further states that colleges about to conduct exams have to strictly abide by the SOPs generated by Jammu and Kashmir government and regulatory bodies for COVID-19. 

However, the decision has been taken soon after the Supreme Court pronounced the verdict keeping up with UGC guidelines and approving exams to be completed by September 30, 2020. The verdict states UGC cannot mandate completion of final year exams within September 30, 2020. States can appeal to UGC for extension of dates.
