Dr. Yukti Ahuja is the Dean at JIMS, New Delhi. She has over 12 years of experience in spanning marketing, academic research, teaching, and consulting. At JIMS, she emphasizes experiential learning which will enable the students to exhibit competencies most desired by the global business community.

Tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?

“Industry rewards one’s efforts but also encourages one to strive for more”

Being an academician by profession is something that I treasure. While I think I have accomplished a few milestones, I also keep learning each day, each moment; and feel just like a student for life. While one experiences the pleasure of being with the young and sometimes being one among them too; there is also enormous responsibility for disseminating as well as creating knowledge. Being in the Higher Education sector the onus of preparing the budding minds for the business world and equipping them to learn to apply what they know is ours.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“Being an adaptable leader and not succumbing to any pressure”

Firstly, I firmly believe that Leadership skills aren’t ingrained and can be taught. I feel that our leadership styles evolve. In our career-progression, we get to work with different organizations and diverse cultures, it’s even common to represent multiple leadership styles, during different situations, and at different levels in an organization. If the situation expects democratic leadership, deliver and take everyone along. A participative style always allows me to get more inputs from my team. Their valuable suggestions being executed not only leads to higher job satisfaction but also higher productivity which always keeps them motivated.

How does your curriculum ensure the best practice of industry?

“We follow an eclectic mix of inbound and outbound learning”

The course curriculum for PGDM-International Business at JIMS very well fits the requirements of the industry. The syllabus is revised by experts and practitioners for its quality and benchmarking across the industry. For IB specialization there are specific papers like International trade logistics, Global supply chain management, and International trade risk procedure, etc. The teaching methodology focuses on industry and academic exposure. Classroom modules emphasize the introduction of concepts and theoretical foundation using multimedia presentations, role-plays, case studies, etc. and live projects, Internships, On the Job training, industry projects, etc. provide the much-needed exposure to the corporate work culture.

How do you look at the growth of students through placement opportunities available at JIMS? How do you wish to push the envelope further?

“Encouraging students to take up social sensitivity projects for holistic learning”

At JIMS, the first few months are spent on imparting industry knowledge and teaching tools and techniques that enable students to identify, connect, and analyze their acumen. They gain this experience through lectures from industry experts, workshops conducted by corporate mentors, seminars, corporate conclaves, etc. In addition to this, they are allowed to pick live projects and then work in the industry. They complete an eight-week training with industry that equips them with business problem identification and resolution. Group discussions on business-related issues and interview preparation are a part of continuous exercise.

“JIMS, PDGM has a separate placement department called “Corporate Resource Management Centre – CRMC” which takes care of placements, internships, and live projects and provides the first-hand experience to the students.”

How do you tend to establish a relation with the students being the Dean? How do you make yourself available to them?

“Giving the students free space to share their feedback regarding anything and everything”

Taking everyone along is the key. Students sometimes come up with such mature ideas that you can’t choose to ignore. Regularly, I conduct an interactive session with them. We call it the Dean’s session. This platform allows them to discuss everything that makes them happy and also everything that causes a heart-ache. Recently, in a session with second-year students, I realized that we made a complete placement preparation module for them. We encourage student-driven activities, seminars, conferences, and also Clubs. Each class has class representatives who are elected each trimester with the formal elections.

What would be your ideal school environment, and how would you encourage that kind of culture?

“With the right platform, every student can claim his destiny”

At JIMS we believe that each student has a distinct set of capabilities. When their unique qualities are honed and unidentified ones are developed, they emerge as the most competent lot for the industry. At present, we have our in-house mentorship program comprising faculty, corporate, alumni, and placement mentors to establish connections with every student. JIMS has an institution Incubation Cell in which students actively participate and conduct entrepreneurship-related events. Some of the regular features in this regard include mentorship sessions, founder series, business plan competition, pitch training, etc. The recent in this edition is to learn how to give an “Elevator Pitch”.

What goals do you have in your mind for your college for the next few years?

“Ensuring that our students find global opportunities, becoming our advocates in the world”

I want to take the PGDM International Business Program to those who look for expansion. I want people to stop connecting an International Business program with an international placement. That is probably just a threshold. I look forward to creating a program wherein you are equipped with a complete International movement plan whether physically or virtually. International projects and internships for exposure are on the cards. Also, we plan a tie-up with logistics firms as well as international banks.
