What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

Supplement and improve the regular classroom teaching to enable comprehensive education”

Primary duties of faculty at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) include effective classroom teaching, academic advising, counselling and career guidance. Faculties also participate in departmental committee work and continuous development of the curriculum. In current scenarios of digital education, we are also involved in seeking new devices, techniques, and online technologies that may improve the teaching and learning process.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“By organizing seminars, workshops, internships and expert lectures for our students”

Theory and practice are essential elements of most engineering programmes and they both contribute greatly to the cumulative knowledge gained by students. Exploring academic research and delving into its methods helps students learn concepts of their field. It shows them the best practices and the recurring challenges they may face. We emphasize on following activities for a practical approach:

  • By organizing internship which helps them to learn and relate the industrial aspects
  • We conduct soft skills training starting from the first year of the engineering program
  • By running industry-related value-added courses.
  • Conducting practical/lab classes effectively

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated?

Updating our curriculum and deciding for the value-added courses is an annual exercise”

Shivalik College of Engineering is an affiliated college of Uttarakhand Technical University and is governed by its syllabus. With the implementation of outcome-based education (OBE), we mainly focus on the learning aspect. Hence we analyze our curriculum with respect to the contemporary technologies prevalent in the industry and identifying the gaps. We also run value-added courses such as ANSYS CFD, solid works, CNC NX CAM, etc to keep a student updated.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education and placement?

“With our mentor-mentee system, each student is guided in academics and soft skills”

Our department is highly focused on the placement of our students and continuously monitors their technical and personality development progress. We conduct customized classes for our students appearing for the job or placement drive. Most of our students are working at very high-rated Industries such as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Tata Motors (BARC), Delhi Metro, CEAT Tyres, etc.

What has been your long-standing vision for this college?

“Help the students and the budding technocrats with my experience and knowledge”

I have had a clear goal of providing quality education and necessary skills to students. I continuously motivate them to pursue higher education and practice research-based activities. I would like to share my work experiences also, for their benefit.

How does the department enhance the skills of the faculty?

“Regular FDP’s and training sessions in the domain of latest technological advancements”

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is very much aware and focused on bridging the gaps between Academy and the industry. Therefore, we prepare our faculties by conducting faculty development programs and research-oriented programs in collaboration with industrial experts. This helps our faculty understand the contemporary technologies prevailing in the industry and in turn develop value-added courses.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for a prosperous career ahead?

Students should learn technical courses and implement the learnings in the practical world”

Technology is one of the most important verticals helping our country to grow economically. I would suggest my students venture outside their comfort zone and learn contemporary technologies.

Soft skills like communication, analytical reasoning, team building, and leadership have become equally important in today's scenario. Hence, students must focus on this area too.
