Fees is very low and affordable as I mentioned. You can get admission in this college either through ICAR exam or Jharkhand state exam. And through both exams you get scholarship. Through ICAR you get Rs. 5000 pm and through state scholarship money amount I don't know but you do get it.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Curriculum is quite interesting and if someone loves forest and nature and trees, this course is perfect for that person. But to get job in this field, you have to Crack govt. Exams. There are many jobs in private too but just don't compare it with anyother popular courses.

Admission:

The method of applying into this university is only through their online admission portal. I applied for M.Sc., Forest Science. There was an admission test followed by interview and release of merit selection list. I had a score of 83% in my UG degree and good performance in test. So I had been selected for this program. There is another special offer for the past students of Nagaland University. They say that they are provided with extra 6% to add up their UG percentage. This is called bonus weightage during admission process.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The curriculum is designed in a way that we completely learn about every single detail of a forest community. The main concepts are silviculture, biodiversity, forest management, laws, policy, forest products, the chemistry of forest products, wildlife conservation, forest biotechnology and many more. We also have field study and practicals. There is a project for every PG degree.

Workshops are frequently conducted. The best thing about the university is that the students are not biased and tend to live collectively with each other without and discrimination that usually happen in colleges and groups are formed.

Placement Experience:

The placements are not so great. Also there are no great prospects in forestry in private sector in India. There are few in agroforestry and relevant fields. Few of my mates are placed in JK papers, which is a paper manufacturing firm. Of the class of 40 students, 2 got placed. So 5% placements (here, I'm taking about forestry. In the wood science and technology course, placements are 100%). University, quite unexpectedly, do not allow its students to do an internship, and often discourages the students to join somewhere as intern. Though few of the students do internship, without the knowledge if university. And if asked the permission to do internship, the dean, and university administration refuses, usually the reason being, it may lead to missing few classes which is not acceptable to them.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Course curriculum, for MSc forestry is quite outdated, not upto the present need, and teaches you methods and techniques which were in use some 5 decades ago or so. Present equipments are either unavailable with them or they are just not enough for their use in educational purposes. Not research driven, and even if you want to do some research work on your own, you'll be deterred from it by the university administration. Few placements, but not significant enough to mention (the university website's information on placements is misleading). And, the best part of studying here is, visits. Both, in the fields, and industrial visits. Which is quite frequent, and most finely managed. Rest of the university is run by few people only.

Campus Life:

If I don't comment on the academy part, FRI campus is the best place to live in. It has good vibes. You can not get bored up here. You have a big green campus with hell lot of flowering trees, you have good birding spots to go for birding. Metal roads to go for a walk of cycling. A river called tons just in the backside of campus. Beautiful lawns. Everything is so lively. Gender ratio as far as I have observed keeps on changing in forestry. Generally more Gil's to boys ratio in alternation with more boys to girls in consecutive year. And in other course like WST, generally there are more boys than girls. No extra curricular activities in college's curriculum.

Remarks:

In the past FRI was considered the temple of Forestry. I think it was because of some reason. Reason could be the management, administration and quality students. I'm hopeful that if quality students are provided with best management and administration, then it can regain it's old reputation. They will have to be a bit more serious for quality syllabus as well as faculty. Seriousness is not just limiting attendence to 75% or more. Moreover quality doesn't come from attendence or something.

Admission:

The institute conducts its own dedicated entrance exam. Students who have pursued their graduation from the zoology, botany, physics background can apply for the entrance exam. If you clear the exam, you will be called for the interview round. The interview was a very tactical one, although I was very confident about it since it has been my passion to be an environmentalist.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions:

College offer scholarship for the topper of each course. This scholarship is offered every semester. Award of merit is another award that is offered to the students. Apart from that, students from reserved categories, minor categories, in general, are also offered a concession in fee.

Ques. Is FRI, Dehradun a good institute for pursuing an MSc in forestry?

● Top Answer By Tanya Dey on 13 Jan 21

Ans. Forest Research Institute (FRI) is an institute concerned with the forestry sector in India. The M.sc, Ph.D., PGD, and other short term courses are designed to impart practical knowledge to the students of this institution in the Department of Forestry. In terms of the M.Sc department, a few features need to be highlighted: Academic Teaching The classes are conducted by profound scientists of FRI and other affiliated institutes such as WII, IIRS, FSI, Retd. IFS Officers, and Senior IFS Officers. Surprise visits of renowned lecturers from other institutes can also be observed. Infrastructure The campus itself is well-equipped and designed appropriately to provide the students with an adequate practical experience in terms of – A Well-classified and systematically arranged central nursery of Forest species. The Institute has an enormous Reserved Forest of Tropical & Subtropical vegetation, thus it presents more opportunity to study them and increase the previous knowledge. The division of the departments in a strategic way enlarges one’s expertise wavelength through first-hand observation and examination of the varied species. Library The library of FRI is widely known as the 2nd largest library on Forestry and allied subjects. It is updated frequently and well-maintained. If your aim is Ph.D. then you would not face many problems because the opportunities for doing a research paper in this line of work are infinite. Throughout the course you will get sufficient time for preparation of Government exams, if you want to. The curriculum is lenient. There a lot of drawbacks as well which should be taken into consideration – This institute is not apt for a master’s degree. If you intend to pursue graduation or some other course in FSI then you are making the right decision. Although the same cannot be said for the master students. The number of companies visiting the campus for recruitment is quite less. So, the students have to rely on their own contacts and social skills to establish connection with their choice of companies and organizations like NGOs in the forestry sector, etc. to land up a permanent job. The student is left with two gateways - either aim for government jobs or higher studies. These are the two options left with the students after completing M.sc in Forestry from this institute because getting a job is highly unlikely. So, you should not opt for FSI if you are considering getting enrolled in this institute. You can try to look at other better colleges or institutes with good placement rates and more widened scope.Read more

Ques. What opportunities will I get if I pursue an MSc in forestry from FRI, Dehradun?

● Top Answer By Aakash Roy on 13 Jan 21

Ans. The opportunity of placement here is bleak, therefore it is better to look out for other opportunities as well. If you have completed your MSc in forestry from FRI, you have four options to pursue – Join the Forest department as a forest ranger. It is an adventurous job and it is flourishing, as a profession, in recent years. Prepare for government exams. It is always a safe option to fall back on. If one manages to crack it, they get a secured job, with a good salary package, and a reputation as well. If one wants to continue in the academic line of forestry, then Ph.D. is always a great option. One can work on their research paper, dedicate long hours of research to their selected topic and produce a research paper that can be published later on. If the above-mentioned options are not suitable, then you can apply for the respective companies to work in. The chances of companies paying a visit to the forestry department are rare but the students can establish a link – a direct contact with the companies based on f their grades and resume. There are multiple paths outside the world of FRI that can be explored, all one needs is the knowledge of the chosen path and the right direction. I hope this was helpful.Read more
