Fees and Financial Aid

The total tuition fee per semester in instrumentation engineering branch is 1lakh for general candidates. Apart from this, there is hostel and mess fees etc. which again cost around 50 thousand per semester. For SC,ST candidates , the tuition fee is completely waived, they just need to pay for the hostel and mess fees. The overall amount they need to pay for the complete 4 year btech course is somewhat around 4 lakhs, whereas the total amount for a general candidate is around 12-13 lakhs. A major scholarship programme offered to IIT KGP students is the means cum merit scholarship, awarded upto 25% of the total admissions, based on merit and financial need.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course instrumentation engineering comes under the department of electrical engineering, yet it also covers the concepts of electronics. The subjects of this course are extremely industry relevant such as instrumentation devices, embedded systems, wtc. Some of the companies hiring this branch are NVDIA, Texas Instruments, etc. But in major cases, students often go in the field of software development and data science. The exams of IIT KGP's EE dept are considered hardest of all and this department is infamous for being difficult to get grades.

Campus Life

The well known fest of IIT Kharagpur is Kshitij which is a techno management fest and is conducted in the month of January. college library is vast and almost all the books are available in hard copy or soft copy as it also supports a digital library. The classrooms are good with centralised air conditioning and pretty big to accomodate approx 200 students. Almost all the sports are there i our college and the sports community also organise competitions from timr to time. There are so many clubs run by students too.

Faculty

The student to faculty ratio in college is 15:1. The faculties are very approachable, you can have your doubts cleared easily. Professor Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya of the Physics department is one of my favourite faculties. The exam pattern is as follows:- one class test of 10 percent weightage. then midsem exams of 30 percent weightage. then class test again of 10 percent weightage. then endsem exams of 50 percent weightage. They are difficult but can be cleared through practice.

I really like the faculty at my campus. They're smart, hardworking, and dedicated to their job... We also owe them for timely updates they promptly give us on emails without fail.... The faculrt memebers are truly dedicated to their job for which they deserve respect. I have had 2 sets of exams and other minor tests. The marking schemes differed through the subjects.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course is very relevant to the latest industry's demands. We have ML courses as well, and we have a lot of extra curricular activities that keep us up to date. While the course prepares us for corexwe have plenty of non core opportunities.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fees yearly is 140000 per year which is to be paid in one installment together. There is no distribution in the fees. The fees for students is lesser who come under some specific category like management quota, SC, ST. But there is examination fee per semester depending on the number of subjects we have. There are various scholarships for students by which they can get concession in their fees.

Placement Experience

The placements are well renowned with higher packages made for students securing good percentile in their academics. The percentage of students getting placements is 9.2 per year accordingly. My plans after getting this degree are very clearance straight that getting into IT field from instrumentation engineering is really good for my benefit and point of view.

Exam system of college is very bad ???? By University rule if you got 30/30 marks in mid semester And you got 10/10 Marks by assignments So You got 10/60 marks in end semester The total is 50Marks you pass in subject But college rule is you compulsory take 20/60 Marks for passing for subject + You need minimum 20/30 marks in mid semester + Assignments marks. So this is very bad rule.

Faculty

The faculty members are no doubt very highly qualified and experienced. They are probably one of the best in their respective fields. The faculties are quite friendly and approachable they even respond on the online text messages and doubts of the students. The system of exams here is as follows -: 2 class test each of 30 marks. The average of the two will make 30% of your final result of each subject End sem exams of 100 marks of each subject. The 70% of the marks scored (out of 100) will add up to make the final result. So basically 30 marks from class test and 70 marks from end semester exams. In the semester grade card you don't get marks instead you get grades which corresponds to a range of marks that you have scored.which is as follows:- Grade. Range of marks S. 91-100 A. 81-90 B. 71-80 C. 61-70 D. 51-60 E. 41-50 The passing marks here is 40. The SGPA is calculated from the grades you got which comes out to be a number between 5-10. If any student fails in any exam of any subject he/she can appear for the supplementary exams which is conducted after a few months especially for those students only. The course includes sessional subjects too like Engineering Drawing, Workshops, Labs Where a student must pass on the first go.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course curriculum is relevant to some aspects but not entirely. The course teaches you about both Instrumentation and Electronics. So student having their interest in either of these can opt for this course. This course provides you with abundance of carrier making opportunities whether it is in Instrumentation or Electronics or may be some other thing. While talking about on the point that how well the course curriculum prepares anyone for real world problems it loses here some points. The curriculum is outdated. The technology is getting advanced every year passing and we are still stuck with the stuffs that used to exist decades ago. We must match ourselves with the present day techniques and technology used in the industry. The curriculum needs to be reviewed and updated. The frequency and timings of the exams is fair enough with a difficulty level of moderate to hard.

Faculty

In the first year where many courses are common in different branches the room often consists of more than 200+ students but in the departmental courses the ratio improves and it varies for different departments. The faculty here is very approachable, you can approach them right after the class or email them asking for some time. The first year professors who I had the privilege of meeting, were all good. A.K. Pradhan Sir of electrical department and Atul Jain Sir of mechanical department were my favourites. There are faculty here that I strongly disliked, atleast till now. There are class test, quizes, tutorial and most importantly midsems and endsems. Many category students fail to clear the exams Curriculum falls short in many cases of relevancy but IIT KGP is substantially trying to improve in that matter.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course curriculum is updated every 4 years. One thing I love about my degree is how it starts things slow and later clutches and delves into the advanced stuff. Labs are given equal importance with strict attendance criteria. Industry standards are well maintained and you won't miss out on the latest technologies. Some room of improvement is still there, like we should totally do away with writing 100 pages of assignment for a grade, Labs can particularly upgrade some of their equipment in accordance to the industry standards. Although if you are passionate about this degree, there are times when you will feel like you can't go any further due to how rigorous this course is but that time passes after you spend a nice weekend with family/friends.

Faculty

The faculty-to-student ratio in our department is 1:5. You certainly won't feel there's a shortage of professors here. Barring 2-3 faculty members, everyone has a PhD and the rest are busy obtaining it. They teach traditionally with the best information available regarding the subject matter. Although I feel classes should be equipped with smart boards given it's usefulness. Professors are more than happy to clear your doubts during office hours. They are very approachable and will never shy away from clearing your problems.

Campus Life

The annual fests are Kshitij (techno management fest held in January) , Spring fest (social and cultural fest held in January). The books are available to all during library hours and can be borrowed when needed.Smart classes are available in the classrooms which is very useful to teach students.Sports and extra curricular facilities are very rich in the campus with many stadiums and indoor gymnasiums. There are cells and societies of almost every tech field or extracurricular field

Course Curriculum Overview

I chose Instrumentation engineering keeping in mind the current state of semiconductor industry in India.I would say that the curriculum is a little backdated compared to what professionals are looking for today. To improve it,they need to include relevant elective subjects as subject choices before every semester. The frequency of exams is determined by the professor.Generally, there are two class tests and one midsemester and endsemester exams in each semester.

Ques. Which is better, EE at DTU or ICE at NSIT?

● Top Answer By Tithi Aggrawal on 04 Jul 23

Ans. There is no better branch between EE at DTU and ICE at NSIT. It's all about preferences and inclinations. To help you make an informed decision let's talk about both the branches individually EE at DTU EE at DTU is core electrical engineering wherein you are taught concepts related to power, grids, electrical machines, etc.  For placements, core companies like BHEL and companies in the energy field visit the campus.  ICE at NSIT This branch has Control Engineering concepts along with electrical, electronics, and computer engineering.ICE has very light coursework and it's easy to maintain a good CGPA.  You also get enough time for your passions and extracurriculars. IT giants like Facebook, Google, etc. Don't allow ICE students to sit for placements.  Core companies that recruit students of this branch include Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and others.  Non-tech companies like BCG, Bain, and JPMC allow all students to sit for placements. NSIT has a larger batch size and thus the competition here is less than DTU for placements but it still it cannot match the brand value of DTU. In all, both DTU and NSIT have similar opportunities and placements so with the right mindset you can do well at both colleges. Read more

Ques. How is ICE at NIT Trichy?

● Top Answer By Raya Das on 24 Mar 21

Ans. My brother is a recent graduate of Instrumentation and Control Engineering at NIT Trichy, so let me share some facts about its overall performance.  There are some pros and cons of the department which include: Pros: Vibration control research in ICE at Nit Trichy is really good. Robotics, Control, and Electronics are also good for pursuing your graduate studies. Career/ Job aspects across a variety of profiles are accessible for ICE graduates in campus placements. Seniors help a lot with academics. You will be trained to work under pressure. Classrooms are neat and have a great environment. No uniform is required for entering the labs. Categories ICE at NIT Trichy Course Fee 5.65 lakh Placement Percentage 80-90% Highest CTC 20 LPA Average CTC 12 LPA Recruiting Companies Tech Mahindra, TCS, Texas Instruments, JP Morgan, etc. Cons: There are only 11 faculties in the department out of which only two faculties teach properly.  Labs are not up-to-the-mark. Most of the electronics components don’t work properly. The guidance is inadequate. Assignments provide little help. Due to continuous fests in the college, it might be difficult to concentrate on your studies. Like every college, there should be 4 classes per week, but here in ICE, the faculty members tend to keep 6-8 classes per week with students attending the classes just for the attendance. Subjects like PDD, Engineering Mechanics, and Analytical Instrumentation are taken for granted.  If you are really interested in Instrumentation, only then you should join this department. Otherwise, join some other branch in NIT T so that you are able to learn something.Read more

Ques. How is Instrumentation and Control engineering in NIT Trichy?

● Top Answer By Shaheena Sheikh on 06 Sept 21

Ans. For understanding the several factors relevant to the institute, you should know both the advantages and disadvantages that are in favor of you. Thus, here is a detailed breakdown of every aspect you should know about NIT Trichy.  Instrumentation and Control Engineering (ICE) at NIT Trichy -  The placement ratio of the branch is really high.  Students can have multiple opportunities in both circuital and non-circuital engineering fields.  The faculty of NIT Trichy is extremely cooperative and helpful for students pursuing their higher education. Moreover, there is a lesser number of credits, unlike many other departments, helping students have free time. Thus, it can lead students to pursue their hobbies, alongside education. Most essentially, it escalates students to acquire a good rank in GATE, leading them to secure positions in top PSUs.  Besides, it inculcates advanced interdisciplinary engineering, making it convenient for students to secure positions at top foreign universities.  Categories ICE at NIT Trichy Course Fee 6.65 lakhs Highest CTC 28 LPA Average CTC 12-16 LPA Recruiting Companies Qualcomm, Morgan Stanely, Accenture, Flipkart, etc. The major disadvantage to talk about is, It can degrade your performance if you lag behind, during study hours. There is no other significant drawback of neither the branch nor the institute. So opting for this course can be a good step.Read more

Ques. Which would be better to take from NIT Trichy: instrumentation and control or production?

● Top Answer By Anirban Biswas on 04 Sept 21

Ans. I know a little bit about ISI Kolkata since I have a few friends from the institute. Here is what you should know about the internships between semesters.  The course curriculum specifies that in the summer after completing your first year of M.Tech, you have to do an internship either in the industry or academia. You will have 3 options.  Industry: Many companies that visit the Campus for placements of 2nd-year students also select interns for the same. Some of such companies are Samsung Research Labs, Google, General Electric, Reliance, Flipkart, De Shaw, JP Morgan Chase, etc. The average stipend offered last year was 65,000 rupees/month. Some companies offer more than 1 lakh/month. One of my friends interned at Samsung Research Labs. Academia: As per ISI guidelines, you need to pursue an internship at a different academic Institute or industry. A friend of mine went to NUS Singapore, while two others went to a university in Germany. You can also apply to other institutes in Japan, USA, and Europe. People also go to IITs, CMI, and other Tier-1 Institutes of India. Within ISI: If for some reason you could not get an internship in the above-mentioned ways, you can approach any of the 250+ faculty members across all 5 ISI‘s and can ask to work with them in their labs. You will have internships at the end of the first year. In the second year, you will have placements, dissertation, academics. So, the only time left to do an additional internship is the winter break after the first sem. Unless you are extremely enthusiastic, I will suggest that you take a break during this period. Because after the break you will be swamped with coursework for 1.5 years.Read more

Ques. Is the instrumentation and control engineering course at NIT Trichy tough?

● Top Answer By Rajiv Shankar on 31 Aug 21

Ans. The answer would be Yes. One of my friends had completed B.Tech in Instrumentation and Control Engineering from NIT Trichy. The course is definitely tough but the level of difficulty perceived may differ from person to person. And here is some of the information about the course. Sheer multi-disciplinary nature of subjects : In the very same semester, the candidate will have to study a varied range of subjects such as Fluid mechanics, Material sciences and Circuit theory.  All of these subjects require a good knowledge about modeling in different areas of Physics as it is one of the most essential skills of an Instrument designer. Involvement in Laboratory activities : Practical knowledge is very important.  Most of the lab exercises are worked in a team.  Thus to complete any task starting from designing, experiment and analysis within a particular given time is a bit of a challenge.  It is important for all the team members to work efficiently for the task to be completed. Programming and Analytical skills :  It is important to have a good hold on C/C++ programming to understand subjects such as Data structures/Algo, Embedded systems, Control systems design. Product design and Development : The candidate needs to come with new project ideas and develop it from scratch and make it an Industrial prototype.  This will require a lot of outdoor work, market surveys, meeting suppliers and customer feedback.  Teamwork is very important for such activities. Design specification : Right from the lab exercises, most of the projects and products the candidate needs to work on have a clear Design Specification.  It is important to adhere to those specifications as it demands sincere and laborious efforts from the candidate which might be tough.  The faculty or project guide may also make things tougher. These were some of the aspects that make Instrumentation and Control Engineering tough. The course is pretty involved and demanding. Though all these mentioned aspects and skills are required to be a successful Instrumentation engineer.Read more

Ques. Which one is better - Thapar University (EIC) or JIIT Noida (CSE)?

● Top Answer By Saloni Mohan on 07 Aug 21

Ans. Thapar University in all aspects is a lot better than JIIT. But I am not quite aware of the EIC branch. You can interact with ex-students of the institute online, to get a better idea about the course. If you think it will be a better choice, go for it. According to placements, Thapar is much better than JIIT Noida. Most of the companies that participate in Thapar’s placement program are well reputed like Microsoft, Infosys, and many more.
