Here’s a comparison between the two options- Parameters IIT Roorkee Civil IIT BHU Mechanical Average Package INR 18 LPA INR 21.95 LPA (around 80% students get placed) Top Recruiters on campus Larsen, Turbo, Tata, Sprinklr, Jio, L&T, Godrej, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Zepto, Google, Jaguar Land Rover. Amazon, American Express, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Google, ITC Ltd., Microsoft, Oracle, Paytm, etc. Research Facilities One of the best research facilities at the Civil Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee. Ample research opportunities and well-equipped laboratories. One important thing that my friends told me is that the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT BHU is one of the strictest departments in India. It makes the students question their own potential. The department professors are very strict and the coursework is extremely rigorous. The students are given assignments and projects which they have to complete within a day. I would suggest you choose IIT Roorkee Civil as it offers the same facilities and placements as IIT BHU Mechanical. Ans. Being one of the oldest and top IITs, IIT Roorkee boasts an excellent placement scenario with many top companies visiting the campus. This year too, the entire batch got placed in their 4th year. Some students even got 2-3 job offers. Many seniors were given PPOs while doing their internships. Nutanix offered job roles to many students. The highest international salary package stood at 1.3 CPA whereas the highest domestic salary package offered was 60 LPA. The lowest salary package offered ranged between 8 LPA - 9 LPA.  A number of big firms made it to the placements like  Microsoft Google Nutanix Adobe DE Shaw JP Morgan Goldman Sachs The most common role offered was that of an SDE. Ques. Which branch should I choose: B.Tech (Electrical Engineering) in IIT Roorkee or Dual Degree (Electrical Engineering) in IIT Kharaghpur?

Ans. According to me, B.Tech (Electrical engineering) from IIT Roorkee is a better option due to the following reasons: B.Tech electrical engineering is a 4 year program while dual degree (electrical engineering) is a five year program. This means that choosing IIT Roorkee will help you enter the workforce earlier. The B.Tech curriculum focuses equally on theoretical and practical learning. This will prepare you for industry roles.  On the other hand, the dual degree curriculum gives more importance to research and specialisation in electrical engineering. Here are the 2023 placement figures for IIT Roorkee and IIT KGP: Parameters IIT KGP (Phase-I) IIT Roorkee Highest Package INR 2.6 CPA INR 1.3 CPA (Highest International- INR 1.06 CPA) Top Recruiters (2024) OLA, OneByZero, SecPod, SIRION LABS, TCS Research, and others. American Express, Barclays, Chegg Inc, Flipkart, Google, Microsoft, Myntra, and more. Unfortunately, the branch-wise placements are not available for either of these IITs.  I would recommend you choose B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee over Dual Degree in Electrical at IIT KGP due to the above reasons. Read more

Ques. What is the average package of IIT Roorkee mechanical (B.Tech) graduate?

Ans. IIT Roorkee Placements 2023 is still ongoing and hasn’t been concluded yet. The highest domestic CTC was recorded at INR 1.3 CPA while the highest domestic CTC was recorded at INR 1.06 CPA. Students revived more than 500 offers and around 63 recruiters visited the campus. IIT Roorkee does not release branch-wise placements but around 85% of the entire batch of every branch gets placed with preferred branches like CSE and ECE having a placement rate of around 98-100%.  Coming to Mechanical, the highest CTC stood at INR 97 LPA while the average core package stood at INR 14 LPA. The lowest package offered by a non-core company was recorded at INR 17 LPA. Top recruiting companies are  Amazon Google Goldman Sachs Microsoft Almost 60% of students got internships in this branch.Read more

Ans. During the 2023 placements,76.98% students of Civil engineering got placed from IIT BHU. The highest CTC recorded was INR 1.15 CPA.The median package was INR 15.75 LPA, and the average package was INR 19.09 LPA. As for IIT Roorkee, 84% civil students got placed and the highest package was recorded at INR 1.3 CPA. Ans.  Instead of recommending any specific institute, there are some myths that need to be debunked first: Placements at one institute are better than the other. BHU has a wider network. IITG has a cooler administration. You must compare the two courses based on the following features: Academic research Placement statistics Competitive coding Open-source development Other club activities Climate and geography Connectivity (and distance from hometown) If you're specifically interested in CSE, then the first four points are almost equal for both BHU and Guwahati. When it comes to the other points, IITG has a better climate, while Varanasi may be better connected and nearer to your hometown. So, it's up to you to weigh the pros and cons and decide which institute suits you better. Remember to make an informed decision and choose wisely.Read more

It's important to note that the remaining students who weren't placed actually opted for higher education in other reputed universities. Top recruiters like Uber, Samsung, Microsoft, Google, and JP Morgan visit the university with the highest package offered by Uber being INR 2.2 Crore and the lowest package being INR 15 LPA . The average salary package for Computer Science Engineering (CSE) is INR 29 LPA . In terms of internships, students were offered INR 2 lacs per month by companies such as Uber and Microsoft. A majority of students tend to choose careers in software development and web development.  In 2022, the highest packages have been offered by Microsoft and Google. Ans. ECE department of IIT Guwahati is known for its excellent research work and quality of education. The department has many professors who are specialized in Signal processing and related areas of electronics. However, the VLSI and Microelectronics group has less number of faculties around 5-6 while electromagnetics and microwaves with only two faculty. The reason why I am telling you about the faculty count is that the optional courses and projects offered will be having approximately the same ratio of streams as that of faculty expertise. Ques. How is the Mathematics and Computing in IIT Guwahati?

Ans. For a genuine math lover, Mathematics and Computing program at IIT Guwahati is a literal treat. You need to be proficient in Math to take up this course. The syllabus includes core math concepts combined with knowledge of CS as well. Towards the end, the math is confined to statistics and finance. The syllabus is not very flexible initially but becomes so in the last two semesters. Here are a few pros and cons pertaining to the course Pros : The MnC branch boasts excellent placements second only to the CS department. The placement percentage stood at 91.94%. Out of the total 62 students that opted for placements, 57 were able to secure decent jobs. However, finance firms and banks are yet to realize the true potential of this department. One can get an INR 20 LPA by doing a decent internship and maintaining a good CGPA. Excellent Master's opportunities are even better than CS students. This is the best option for those planning to get a master's abroad. To upgrade your CV, you can do internships and choose electives accordingly. All this will increase your chances of admission to CSE, data science, finance, and mathematics. Job opportunities: This program has excellent opportunities in terms of jobs as well as research and many fields are open to hire students of this course.  Cons The rigidity of the syllabus makes it the jack of all trades master of none. You cannot choose the elective according to your interest during the initial years. Many useless courses add to the overall workload with no increase in knowledge. Those who aren’t into finance may find it difficult to cope with it as it’s impossible to drop finance courses during the initial years. In the near future when the IT industry will be at its peak, MnC might be better than CSE in terms of monetary benefits. If you aren’t certain about your area of interest, then Maths and Computing are definitely better than all core branches except CS. Read more

Ans. It's difficult for me to say whether choosing IIT Guwahati CSE over IIT Varanasi CSE was a mistake without more information about your specific circumstances and goals. Both IIT Guwahati and IIT Varanasi are highly respected institutions, and both offer strong Computer Science programs that are rightly comparable in almost every aspect. The placement scenario is similarly decent at both institutes with very little emphasis on research. The active Coding Club/ CSEA at IIT Guwahati gives it a slight edge over others. Both the institutes are excellent choices for whatever you want to do after graduation be it research, open source development, or a stable job. The only distinguishing feature is the weather as IIT Guwahati has better weather conditions than IIT BHU. However, this flaw is compensated by better connectivity of Varanasi being on the mainland. Read more
