IIT Ropar Ph.D Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must have obtained 60% marks or 6.5CGPA at postgraduate level.
- Candidates from any IIT with minimum 8.00 CGPA/ CPI can also apply for PhD courses. Such candidates are exempted from the requirement of GATE qualification.
- A relaxation of 5% is provided to SC/ ST candidates.
- ERP and Part time candidates are required to have a minimum work experience of 2 years and GATE qualification is not mandatory.
- Eligibility of PhD programme for ProjectStaff of the institute is master degree in Engineering/ Science/ Humanities with 60% or 6.5 CGPA or bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 8.0 CGPA/ 75% or 7 CGPA/ 65% with valid GATE score. IIT Ropar Ph.D Admission 2024
Admission to PhD courses at IIT Ropar are based on interview rounds supplemented by a written test, if necessary. The institute has classified its selection procedure as per the categories of aspirants:
- Regular Full-Time Scholars: Written test/ Interview + GATE exam score
- Research Fellows under Projects/ Schemes: Written test/ Interview + GATE exam score
- Direct PhD: The category is open to CFTIs and non-CFTIs BTech students applying for a PhD program. For CFTIs students, no GATE or other equivalent national exam required. Only, CGPA of at least 8.0 or more out of 10. For non-CFTIs students, GATE score along with 8.0 CGPA out of 10 is required at the time of joining.
- External Registration Program: GATE or equivalent qualification is not required for admission. The candidates should have completed full-time employment of atleast 2 years of experience as on the last date of application.
- Part-Time PhD/ IIT Ropar Staff: No GATE exam scores. The candidates will be selected for admission based on their performance in the interview round.

- After that, the candidates must log in to the website and follow the links on the left side of the menu and fill up the application form. Candidates must be alert about the emails that are sent to them by the college.
- Fill the admission form with necessary details.
- Upload the following documents.

- GATE or any other valid scorecard
- Disability Certificate
- SC/ ST certificate

Course Duration: Minimum period for candidates with B.Tech /M.Sc/ MA degree or its equivalent is 3 years (2 years for exceptional cases) and 2 years for candidates with M.Tech degree or its equivalent and 4 years for non-teaching staff of IIT Ropar.
Course Work: In addition to this, they also have an additional academic examination, synopsis reading, and thesis submission. They also provide interdisciplinary research through the joint supervision of the teachers. Course work has to be normally completed within 18 months from the date of registration with a minimum CGPA of 7.0.
Comprehensive Examination: It consist of two parts:
- Examination on basic concepts of the subject
- Written examination: Minimum weightage is 30%
- Oral examination: Minimum weightage is 30%.

Scholarships are provided for regular full-time scholars. The duration of the director’s fellowship will be maximum for a period of 6 months.
