NIT Delhi PhD Eligibility Criteria

PhD Full-Time (under Institute Fellowship) Engineering Departments

For Engineering Departments:

  • Master's Degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area of research along with a Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate branch of Engineering/Technology with a first-class or minimum 60% marks (or CGPA of 6.5 on 10 10-point scale) in the qualifying examination.

OR

  • B.Tech/B.E./BS (4 years) with a CGPA of 8.5 and above on a 10-point scale or 80% aggregate from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI)/ State funded institute/ university. All such candidates must have valid GATE scores. Several credit courses to be cleared will be 24 credits before the comprehensive examination.

For Science Departments:

  • Master's Degree in an appropriate branch of Science with a first-class or minimum 60% Marks (or CGPA of 6.5 on 10 10-point scale) in the qualifying examination.
  • Candidates with a Master's degree in science must have qualified in GATE/NET for a scholarship. However, the candidates with a Master’s degree in Science without GATE/NET can join in PhD Full-time (Self Financed) (Part-Time) program.
  • For all Engineering Departments, GATE is mandatory for a scholarship for candidates with a Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Candidates with GATE/NET (JRF/LS)/ UGC (JRF/LS) /GPAT/ Inspire Fellow / Sponsored by some outside agency as a full-time candidate need not clear an Institute written examination. For all other candidate(s), the Institute's written examination is to be cleared. However, GATE/NET (JRF/LS)/ UGC (JRF/LS) /GPAT/ Inspire Fellow/ Sponsorship from an outside agency or Institute Examinations are only for short listing of the applicants. A mere short listing of an applicant does not confirm admission to the Ph.D. program. The admission shall be solely based upon the performance of individuals during the “interview and presentation” and the availability of the Supervisor in the proposed area of research.

PhD programs (Part-Time)

  • Candidates from organizations that have MOU with NIT Delhi.
  • Organizations with R&D labs of National Repute.
  • Regular faculty/ Teaching cum Research Fellow or Scientists from Educational Institutions, R&D organizations, and Govt. Department/ Govt. Undertaking provided that the applicant possesses the minimum entry qualifications for the degree with the following additional eligibility criteria: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/ Technology with a minimum of 70% marks in aggregate or equivalent CGPA and a minimum of 10 years of work experience (at the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent) in an engineering degree level technical Institute or R&D organization/ industry, and Evidence of Master’s level R&D work completed. the applicant is in a position to complete mandatory course requirements along with regular counterparts; the applicant proves to the satisfaction of NIT Delhi that his official duties permit him to devote sufficient time to research (No Objection Certificate required).
  • Project staff(s)/ student(s) under projects sponsored by DST/UGC/any government agency, industry, or centers established from grant in aid from the government or international agencies at NIT Delhi may be given administrative clearance to seek admission on full time/part-time basis subject to recommendations of the concerned Principal Investigator of the said Project and approval of Competent Authority. However, he must fulfill the eligibility criteria as per Sr. No. B. No relaxation will be given in screening for the applications.
  • Faculty/ Technical/ Scientific staff of NIT Delhi, External candidates sponsored by Industry/ Institute having R & D facility recognized by NIT Delhi and possessing the same academic qualifications as that for PhD regular candidates, are eligible to apply for PhD Programme as a part-time candidate. The Part-Time candidate(s) shall be required to submit a No Objection Certificate from their Employers stating that the concerned candidate(s) is an employee of that organization and is allowed to pursue his/her research work at NIT Delhi, and his/her routine work permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research work.
  • A foreign national candidate who applies through the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, or Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Govt. of India, is eligible to apply provided that they possess the same minimum qualifications as required for Ph.D. admission in case of Regular candidates.

PhD programs (Full-Time) with external fellowships like GATE/NET (JRF/LS)/ UGC (JRF/LS) /GPAT/ Inspire Fellow / Sponsored by some outside agency

Candidates who have already secured funding/fellowship from reputed external agencies like JRF/DST INSPIRE etc. can also apply for admission to PhD (Full-Time) program. These candidates, if selected, will not be provided any fellowship/contingency grant by the Institute.

NIT Delhi PhD. Selection Criteria

Candidates for the Ph.D. program have to undergo 2 stages:

  • Stage-1: Entrance Test/Written Test

The online screening test in the relevant discipline. The syllabi for the test will be as per GATE/NET examination in the respective subjects. The test shall be of 90 minutes duration for 60 marks consisting of multiple choice questions in the relevant discipline. The minimum qualifying marks for appearing in Stage II will be 50% in the screening test. 

  • Stage-2: Interview

The Screening committee will check the eligibility criteria of the candidates. Students might be asked to make a presentation on their chosen research area.The presentation should be brief and clear (around 5-10 minutes) highlighting the basic idea of proposed research.

NIT Delhi PhD Admission Procedure

NIT Delhi candidate's admission to the Ph.D. program (Full-Time/Part-Time) in all disciplines mentioned in this advertisement shall be made purely based on a “presentation and interview” to be made by the shortlisted applicants in their proposed area of research followed by “interview” to be conducted by the respective Department Admission Committee.

How To Apply?

  • Students have to fill up the online Google Form within the stipulated time mentioned.
  • If a candidate is applying, e.g., Full-time with an Institute Fellowship, full-time self-sponsored, Part-time, etc. then he/she has to apply separately, conversion from one category to another at the time of admission process will not be allowed if the candidate has not applied in those separate categories.

  • While filling up the online Google Form, the candidates need to read all the requisite details and upload all the relevant documents along with the application form in PDF format.
  • A candidate interested in applying in more than one department/ category shall be required to submit separate application forms along with appropriate fees and documents.

NIT Delhi PhD Scholarship

NIT Delhi candidates who have qualified for GATE/ NET of respective discipline/ Institute Entrance Exam for admission to PhD are eligible for Teaching Assistantship-cumScholarships/ Fellowships subject to availability. Ph.D. (Full-Time) students will be awarded scholarship cum teaching assistantships as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India. The scholarship cum teaching assistantship is limited and subject to availability. The selected candidates without scholarship cum teaching assistantship are required to submit an undertaking on judicial stamp paper that they will not claim it from the Institute in the future. However, they can submit research proposals to different funding agencies or they can apply to different outside funding agencies for scholarships.

A fellowship of INR 60,000 per month plus HRA (if accommodation in the Institute is not provided) will be offered for the initial 2 years of the engagement. No other allowances will be provided by the Institute. However, in case, the fellowship is extended for the 3rd year, the fellowship shall be the same. The fellowship offered is purely temporary and the Institute will have the right to review the fellowship based on the performance/conduct of the fellow. Similarly, the postdoctoral fellow must give one month’s notice if he/she wants to leave the fellowship. The postdoctoral fellows engaged by the Institute will not be eligible to receive any other fellowship from government/non-governmental sources during the period of his/her engagement. If the candidate resigns from the post-doctoral fellowship before the expiry of the term, the candidate will have to give either one month's notice or deposit a one-month fellowship to the Institute for the same.

Ques. When does NIT Delhi invite the applications for PhD program?

Ans. NIT Delhi offers admission to the Ph.D. program twice a year. Aspirants are advised to check the notice for the PhD admission during December and July month. 

Ques. How much score is required to clear the coursework at NIT Delhi?

Ans. NIT Delhi research scholars have to secure a minimum of 7.5 CGPA to clear the coursework. Students getting a lower CGPA than this, are allowed to appear only once in a specially conducted end-semester examination.

Ques. When can a scholar finish the PhD program at NIT Delhi?

Ans. The duration of the entire PhD curriculum is generally four years which can be extended to a maximum of two years and is later converted to part-time if the thesis is not submitted within the time frame
