- This is a challenging one-year taught master's program focused on advanced topics in communication networks (fixed and wireless) and related signal processing, including associated enabling technologies. It provides an excellent opportunity to develop the skills needed for careers in some of the most dynamic fields in communication networks.
- This program builds on the internationally recognised research strengths of the Communications Systems and Networks, High Performance Networks and Photonics & Quantum research groups within the Smart Internet Lab. The groups conduct pioneering research in a number of key areas, including network architectures, cross-layer interaction, high-speed optical communications and advanced wireless access.
- The program includes units on Optical Networks and Data Centre Networks. The Optical Networks unit focuses on wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks, time division multiplexed (TDM) networks including SDH/SONET and OTN, optical frequency division multiplexed networks, and optical sub-wavelength switched networks. The Data Centre Networks unit focuses on networks for cloud computing, cloud-based networking, grid-computing and e-science.

- Students require a minimum upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent).

- I like that my course at the University of Bristol, had learned professors who had a lot of expertise in their subject and also an experience on how to teach the subject. They always linked theoretical knowledge with practical examples which helped to understand how is the theoretical knowledge linked with the practical implementations in real life.,
- There were sufficient assignments given to us, along with synchronous and asynchronous classes and materials to gain more knowledge in all aspects.,
- We were also provided with the names of books that were easily found in the library and e-books were also available for free from the library which helped a lot to get comprehensive details on the subject we were studying.,
- I also liked the curriculum of my course since all the courses were closely related to each other and all aspects of the communication networks were taught to us in quite detail.,
- The library of our university was also one of my favourite places to be in. It was quiet, with all the relevant books, and helpful staff, along with a canteen and enough study spaces to get all means to study in my own comfort zone. The career service of our university was also very good and quite accessible. You could go to them anytime in the day or by taking an appointment and show them your CV, and cover letter and get help in various soft skills such as presentation skills.,
- They had a Bristol Plus Award that persuaded me to do things outside of work and in turn I did multiple volunteering, practised my employment soft skills, and built them by putting in the extra effort.,
- There were also multiple events organized by the university with the societies of the university and all festivals were celebrated because of which I didn't miss home.
- Dislikes:
- There were language barriers sometimes where the professors were not able to be comprehensive about what they wanted to teach.,
- What I didn't like was mostly that it was quite expensive. Even printouts were not free and took some amount and I being a person who wants hard copies of stuff, was facing some difficulties.,
- There were not many practical sessions to get better practical exposure.
Course Curriculum:
The course and curriculum were very well-built. The separation of subjects in the first and the second term was carefully selected. The first term included the basics of the subject which helped a lot in the second term as well and also helped as a refresher on the topic we have selected for the thesis. This gave us some idea of how to write the thesis and what to include. It was also accompanied by a feedback from the professors. We were also given classes on the skills required for research and in the end we had to give a research review report of 10000 words. For the thesis, there were some options for research experience as a part of the industry, but there were not many in my opinion though, I was lucky to get the industrial exposure where I got the chance to do my thesis with a company for 3 months. But only 4 people were selected out of 150 people which means that a lot of competition is there in this area.
