Course Curriculum

10

  • My course was easier for me and it is a mix of both technical and theoretical, and it’s quite interesting with workshops and seminars.
  • Positive aspects of my course are it’s quite engaging for the students.
  • Negative aspects is the level of students, as there was a mix of both tech and non tech persons and staff found it difficult to communicate the curriculum common to both.
  • I had classes three days in a week for a total of 6 hours. My class had around 15 Indians, which is nearly half the strength.

Admission Experience

  • I applied for 6 universities and got shortlisted for all 6
    • University of Sheffield – Got unconditional offer
    • University of Strathclyde – Got unconditional offer
    • University of Sussex – -Got unconditional offer
    • University of Surrey – Got unconditional offer
    • University of Exeter – Got unconditional offer
  • I picked Data science courses from all these universities to apply to.
  • I chose Liverpool, as it is one of the Russell group universities and I love the North of England more than the South.
  • The Application process is quite simple. You have to just register and fill details providing your certificates and statement of purpose.
  • The decision was so quick – within 2 weeks – and there is an English language eligibility test. I got this bye as my 12Th standard English mark is above 80%. But there are other exams like IELTS to prove the same. We need a minimum of 6.0 points in all areas for these exams.
  • Overall, the admission is quite easier if you have your SOP ready. I applied for the September 2023 intake.
  • The quick decision process , the location, and the university being one of the Russell group universities are the deciding factors for me choosing this university.
  • I applied on January 10th and I got an offer on January 22nd. The admission process was very quick. There is an application interface specifically for admissions where we can login and use

Campus Life

10

  • Libraries , sports , well-being , guilds, biking , cafes, bars, and pools.
  • Students can get involved in lot of activities through guild, like plant pot painting, well being acrobatic activities, sports activities, volunteering, gardening.
  • There are options to take one-day trips through Guild.
  • Now there is going to be a new campus in Bangalore and the main one is in Liverpool.

Part Time Jobs

  • On campus jobs are quite competitive; I don’t suggest the same
  • But there are on-campus jobs with the career centre , library , cafe , cleaning and guild. All these are with minimum pay. I don’t think anyone can do a teaching job.
  • International students should work only 20 hours in a week
  • I worked for Taco Bell and there are many jobs around the city centre like this at McDonald's, Domino's and other food shops and retail shops like Primark and H&M. I never suggest go for cash in hand jobs, as it can trick visa permissions
  • Indians mostly work in Food chains and retail stores like Primark. But it’s very rare to get jobs as soon as you land. Very few get at the initial stages. For me it took three months and for some students it has even taken 6 months. All these jobs give only minimum pay and this year minimum pay is £12.44. For most of the jobs, you need to apply through Indeed or totaljobs.

Placement

6

  • After my course , anyone can work in the field of AI, like Data Scientist, machine learning engineer or AI specialist.
  • But the course alone is not sufficient to gain a job. You need to work independently through self learning and you should start building your profile from Day 1. There is no point in wasting time all the year and working to find work after you get graduate visa

Exams

  • English language requirements are there.
  • One of the requirements is if you have scored 80% or above in the Indian XII standard English subject , you don’t need to take any separate exams.
  • You may need to provide all your transcripts so far , reference letters , a CV and keep a statement of purpose ready to fill in the application.
  • There was no interview for me but if the admission team needs it, there will be an interview to check your eligibility.

Fees

  • It depends on each course; for me it was £21,000, where I got a £5,000 scholarship for academic excellence. I stayed out of the campus and rented a 1 BHK for £800 per month, excluding bills. Fees can be paid in two instalments. I lived with my family and rented a 1 BHK and my monthly expenses came to around £2500; provided my partner works full time , this is manageable.
  • But for students it should be much less than this, as they can find rooms for less than £150 per week and everything is accessible from the university campus.

Scholarship

  • Yes , there are two different scholarships. One for all international students by default. And other scholarships are given for students with undergraduate marks more than 85%. However, the amount changes every year. There are other scholarships specific to departments. I received £5000 in total and I got two scholarships. Most of my batchmates got this scholarship
