Course Curriculum Overview
I chose electrical engineering because it is a circuital branch and this alone would unlock massive opportunities for internships and placements. Also this was the most suitable branch I could obtain for my rank. I would say the curriculum is quite outdated and you'd have to prepare for industry relevant subjects yourself.Exams of electrical engineering are very difficult to score and highly mathematical.
Internships Opportunities
The students are required to undergo mandatory internship after their third year.Many companies visit the campus to hire students during the 5th semester.Most of them are software and advanced analytics companies.Some famous ones are Goldman Sachs, Google,JP Morgan Chase, Adobe etc.
Placement Experience
Placement statistics of IIT Kharagpur is excellent with multiple offers made across software, quant, consulting , analytics and core domain.Major companies like Google, Microsoft, Optiver, Visa,Mastercard visit the campus each year for recruitment.Highest packages are offered by quant companies and can go upto 2 - 2.5 crore per annum
Fees and Financial Aid
Per year fees-Rs 288000 for general category students.Total fees for the course completion can go upto 16-17 lakh rupees in total.Students from lower income families can avail scholarships offered by private players as well as the college itself.
Campus Life
Large scale fests are held in January for the students.The cultural fest is SpringFest and the technical fest is TechFest.The library is heavily stocked with books of all subjects.The classrooms are modern and air conditioned and equipped with projectors as well.Sports infrastructure is very good and you'd see lots of fields and courts in the campus.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels in the campus are quite old and not so appealing.You'd be given your own bedframe , a personal table and a plastic chair.You'd have your own cupboard to store your clothes and other items.Mess food is okayish and not very appealing.Students frequently spend out of their pockets and eat from night canteens and ordering online.
Admission
IIT Kharagpur is one of the top 7 IITs and electrical engineering was the best course I could get for my rank in JEE advanced.IIT Kharagpur takes admission for the BTech degree courses solely on the basis of your performance in JEE advanced.If you secure a seat through JOSAA, you're required to go through other formalities of the admission when in college itself.
Faculty
I do not have the exact figures but I would say there's a total of 2-3 faculties per hundred students from what I have observed.They are very much approachable outside the class but I'd say the professors in electrical engineering are quite orthodox and do not give away grades that easily.Although every single one of them is highly knowledgeable and well qualified.
Night Life
There is nothing much to do outside the campus.All the buzz and nightlife happens in the campus itself.The campus is large and there's a lot to explore by cycle in groups especially if you're a fresher.There's a lot of stores and cafes inside the campus to hangout with friends.PFC restaurant, Tikka , ADDA are some famous hangout spots.
