What Students Say
Likes
- The faculty in the college is great, from concept clarity to doubt solving , unlike most of the colleges , the professors are willing to give their time to students as much as they need.
- The courses in the college are structured in a way which helps the students to visualise and enjoy the process of learning, even the theoretical parts are made interesting by taking real life cases and examples.
- Ther are lots of events that happen in the college , and the annual fest, the XAVOTSAV , is the biggest highlight for every year. So, even the extra curricular activities are sorted for a student. Hence you can live college life at it's best.
Dislikes
- There are few rules like boys cannot wear round neck t shirts, girls cannot wear too short dresses and many more.
- The college is often criticized for it's strict attendance rules of 75% attendance compulsory to sit in the semester exams.
- The B.Com (Morning) course is an only boys batch but the day classes and evening classes are co-ed, so the college should consider making b.com morning all a co-ed course as after 10 am the students have almost a whole day to day anything the want.
Course Curriculum Overview
As said earlier , the courses are very much relevant for the corporate world and research areas, the college focuses on building men and women who stand out and it has been successfully doing it for 165 years. The teaching methods vary according to the subjects and the professors, however every one of them tries to give the students a clear view of the subject and topic they are teaching. The frequency of the exams is also great as it encourages the students to study if they want to pass the exams .
Placement Experience
The college's placements have been great since the past few years, as the highest packages going upto 23-24 lakhs and the average packages being 8-9 lakhs. Many companies like Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, IBM, EY, Dabur , Godrej etc. come every year for recruitment in the college. The students become eligible for campus placements from the final year of their course, however this may vary for different courses.
Fees and Financial Aid
At the time of admission I paid Rs 37,000 , I belong to the general category, and after that in every semester almost Rs 30,000 is the fees. However, the college provides lots of scholarships including merit - based scholarships, scholarships for students from specific communities , and scholarships to students pursuing specific courses. MERIT BASED SCHOLARSHIPS :- 1. Loyola Scholarship A full fee waiver for all undergraduate and postgraduate courses, except MBA , from the second semester onwards. 2. Nihil Ultra Scholarship A full fee on for all undergraduate courses from the first semester onwards. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS FROM SPECIFIC COMMUNITIES:- 1. Post - Matric scholarship for SC, ST & OBC 2. Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-means Scholarship -: A scholarship for students from minority communities. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS PURSUING SPECIFIC COURSES :- 1. Rupa Scholarship A scholarship for students pursuing MA Psychology , MSW, B.Com and M.Com. 2. Arrupe Scholarship A scholarship for students pursuing all undergraduate and postgraduate courses, except MBA , from the third, fifth, seventh and ninth semesters.
Campus Life
There are numerous clubs and societies in the college, from entrepreneurship to scientific research, all areas are covered by different societies and any talent which the student has can be fulfilled by these societies, and the best part of it is that all these societies are mainly controlled by the students themselves which makes it easier for decision making and Interactions with the society heads. Every society has their own recruiting processes, making it a great experience for the students applying to a society. The Student council of the college conducts the biggest fest of Eastern India, the XAVOTSAV which is totally organized and managed by the students only, from getting sponsors to printing passes, every last thing is done by the students only and there is absolutely no involvement of the college administration, making it a great experience for the students and a learning experience for the volunteers of the events .
Admission
St. Xavier's college (Autonomous) , Kolkata, has always been if not the best, then one of the best colleges of Eastern India, with an NIRF ranking of 6 in 2024, so all of this is for a reason, and the reason is the balance of discipline and fun at the same time which makes this college a stand-out. The admission process is not that hard, you just have to go to the admissions section of the college's website, and fill out the admission form of the course you want to apply for , however for courses the BMS, you have to also give an entrance test, otherwise mostly admission is given on the basis of the marks you obtained in Class 12th. The cutoff is usually 92-93% for courses like B.Com etc. So this is the only place which is considered difficult during the admission process.
Faculty
As of the B.Com (Morning) course, the faculty to student ratio is 1:90 , however it is a lot less in the science and arts departments and ever after the ratio being so large in b.com, the teachers are ready to give every student an extra time for doubt solving after the classes. The college conducts 2 semester exams every year and there is 1 Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) exams in the middle of every semester, the CIA are of 40 marks generally and these marks are added in the semester results after making an average by 2, so the CIA exams take up 20 marks of the semester results. 5 marks are give for the attendance of the students and other 5 given for the assignment, presentations and prospects given to the students during the semester. And at the end of the semester, the semester exams are of 70 marks hence making up 100 % of the semester results. If you are regular with your college studies and give a considerable amount of time to it, the it is easy for you to pass the semesters however if you think that studying 2-3 days before the exams would be enough, then you have got it wrong, it would be almost impossible for you to even complete your syllabus within that time.
Night Life
The college has separate boys and girls hostels, making it easier for outstation students to stay in Kolkata and study in their dream college. Just outside the college there is a great cafe and a south indian food restaurant, which is usually a hangout spot for most of the students. As the college is situated in Park Street, which is considered to have the best nightlife in Kolkata, it is an add-on for the students living near the college. Famous restaurant like the Bombay Shiv Sagar is just 5-10 mins from the college
