- Swimming pool. I like swimming very much and I prefer to swim atleast 4-5 times a week. The pool here is well maintained with the necessary support staff. It is clean and safe.
- Library. It's a very big and peaceful library. It has lakhs of books.
Dislikes
- Technical summit(amalthea). There is very low enthusiasm among the students in participating and organising the summit.
- Distance from main city. The college is far far the main ahemdabad city. Hence for any small work I have to go to ahemdabad.
Course Curriculum Overview :
IIT Gandhinagar follows a drastically new approach than its peers. It has a very advanced curriculum. I took mechanical engineering bcz I was always interested in engines and robotics. IIT provides me with the ideal environment to pursue my academic interests to the fullest. Every course contains a tutorial/lab and a end-sem project component in it. These activities provide an in-depth knowledge of the subject. The professors are also highly supportive and interested in their students. For a 4credit course we need to attend almost 3classes of 1.5hrs each week. 4credit courses are decent difficulty wise and may require extra efforts from the student side.
Internships Opportunities :
In Mechanical engineering companies like Tata , AM steel, seimens, amul, drdo come for placements with decent packages ranging from 15lpa to 20lpa. The college provides internship help to students in their 3year Btech. The top 4-5 of the batch can also go for foreign research internships in universities like univerity of new york, Texas AnM, Washington, etc.
Placement Experience :
Placements in Mechanical engineering is fairly good with above 90%placement rate with average package of 15lpa in ME. Over 400 companies visit the campus. Last year highest package was 80lpa and the lowest was 10lpa across all streams. Because of the recession in IT, the placements this year is going to get adversely affected. Only the final year year students are eligible to sit for placements.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Since IITs are goverment funded institutions the fee structure is highly subsidised. The fee hikes happen once every 10years and are neglible compared to the inflation. My total fees(academic+hostel+mess+extras) is 3lakh per annum. I have gotten a scholarship for economic week students which provides me with a 2/3 rd tuition fees waiver. Hence I have to only give approx 2lakh per annum. There are campus employment opportunities available but I haven't availed those as of now.
Campus Life :
The infrasture at iitgn is inpar with foreign universities. But college clubs need participation. Due to less student density in college, most of the college clubs are dorment entities. We have technical summit(amaltea) and annual fair(blithchron) every year held in October and March respectively. The social atmosphere is very adequate for study point of view and also for those who like sports. The sports complex has world class facilities and it even organises foreign competitions. The social atmosphere is complete ragging free. The seniors are very friendly and supportive towards their juniors. There are no coed hostels here, but free movement is allowed for all inside the hostel complex. There are 12 hostels in total and more are coming up.
Hostel Facilities :
In first and second year one has to live in 3seater rooms. But the rooms are comfortable with adequate lighting, AC, fan, and nice window view. There are common bathrooms and common pantry areas. Laundry services are provided by the college laundry shop only. There is no registration for hostel facilities, since every student is required is required to live in the hostel only. Our college mess provides healthy and clean food. Though one can pay to get food from the outside eateries.
Admission :
I prepared for JEE(joint entrance examination) in 11-12th classes. Due to COVID my coaching classes were held online. I cleared JEE mains+advanced with a good rank under 6000AIR. For JEE you have to register in October to appear for the January attempt of Jee mains exam. For the April attempt you have to register in March. The cutoff to clear JEE mains exam to appear for jee advanced was about 90perctile for general category. After the result of jee advanced, jossa councilling where the students had to register for. This took a month time and 5rounds of councelling. In the end I got IIT Gandhinagar mechanical engineering. All candidates in the science stream are eligible to pursue admission to IITs.
