Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

From a personal point of view, I will always say, that taking up Economics as a major at graduation level was one of the best decisions. Economics is a very dynamic subject and it offers a lot of opportunities for the future both at the domestic and international levels. Starting from research, job, and higher studies, Economics is dominant. Now coming to the college's description, Bethune is one of the best colleges with an amazing Economics Department with great faculty. The professors are highly educated and their method of teaching is very detailed. Professors are just one request away for anything you need. The Economics Honours papers cover a detailed analysis and you need to have a clear concept of the topic and then you can easily rock the exam.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

In the first year of college, you'll be offered internships in various new found societies and companies which are non payable but they offer a certification which can be useful for building a stronger CV.

Placement Experience

3

Placements at the graduation level are comparatively much better at Bethune College. All departments are open to sit for placements during their final year. Companies like TCS, WIPRO and other big companies offer placements to the final-year students. Professors help you through the process and the Placement committee is active in this matter which makes it easier for students. The highest package offered to the bachelor students is 3.6lpa with a median salary of 2.4lpa. Placements are roughly 50% as most students opt for PG courses which is actually a better option if someone doesn't have an urgency to get a job. Personally, I feel a master's degree in a respective course will fetch a high salary in the company. Economics graduates can opt for MSc, MBA, CFA and many other respective PG courses.

Fees and Financial Aid

Bethune College is a fully government-owned college and fees are very low with the scope of getting scholarships. The annual fee for science departments is 1.3K and professors are always ready to help students who need financial aid and also help everyone with scholarships available according to their eligibility. Students can apply for Swami Vivekananda scholarship, Kanyashree Scholarship

Campus Life

4.5

Bethune College organises an annual fest "AALAP" during winter in the month of December. The library of Bethune College is astonishing and I mean it literally. You will get any books available at one go and the faculty members of the library are very cooperative and friendly. Bethune offers a lot of clubs with extracurricular activities, you can join any of them and participate in them. They are sports, drama, arts and crafts, dance, music clubs etc. Each department runs its own website on social media and the main committee of the college is the Bethune College Student Committee where members are selected and they are at responsible of the entire college's amenities and activities.

Admission

Students opting for BSc Economics Honours at the graduation level can come from any background be commerce with Mathematics as a compulsory subject. Economics is an amazing choice as it offers a lot of jobs, research, and higher study opportunities. Bethune College is a girl's college dating back to the 19th century and is one of the most prestigious and heritage colleges in Kolkata, West Bengal. The cut-off for BSc Economics Honours is at least 92% at the 10+2 level and it can reach up to 98-99% as well. In 2021, I got admission on the 6th list with 97%, so we can really do the math here. The application form is available on Bethune College's official website and once you get selected, you'll called for a final confirmation with the required documents. Office attendants are very cooperative and the department professors are always ready to help you with anything.

Other Applied Colleges

Loreto College | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] {Hons.} (Economics)

Loreto is a great college but it's private firstly and secondly, I got into Bethune which is one of the most prestigious colleges in Kolkata with NACC grade of A+

Course Curriculum Overview:

I've always found economics to be really interesting and thats why I choose to persue it. I wanted to dive deep into the actual concepts and workings of the economy and understand how the world works from an economist's point of view. Sadly the curriculam doesnt bridge the gap between theory and real life. It focuses heavily on textbook and not how the world works.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I would say the course is good but you have to opt for masters and PhD to get a good placement. After bsc there's not any placement. The curriculum was basically practical and theoretical based. But I think it should be more practical so that we can get a job after doing bsc. The teaching method was good I didn't have any problem with that. As it was under Calcutta University so the exam questions were too difficult, sometimes it came out of our syllabus , i think they should change this a little bit .

Course Curriculum Overview:

The syllabus for BSc. Microbiology Hons. was in line with my interests. Few topics like virology, bacteriology, and diversity of the microbial workd are what drew my attention to pick this course. Although there are some portions which one would consider "boring", but I believe every subject has its interesting as well as boring portions. It's seems fair to judge a subject by seeing if the "boring" portions outweigh the "interesting" parts or not.

Course Curriculum Overview:

In terms of relevance and comprehensiveness of the course curriculum, my rating is solid 4.1 out of 5. Because it offers a variety of courses like compulsory english, environmental science, constitution values of India, Inter Disciplinary Courses where one can opt for a variety of subjects which change along with the course proceeds or semester changes. Not only that two major papers and one minor paper are present throughout the semester. As a student we should be well aware of our country and its law as well as how we can keep our environment healthy followed by sustainable development.
