Course Curriculum Overview
I chose the course owing to my keen interest in mathematical sciences and it's application in modern technology. The course curriculum was updated in the year 2019 with computing subjects being incorporated from the third semester and as electives, making the course similar to the trending 'Mathematics and Computing' course. There are a total 75 seats for the course with one teacher for each subject. The professors are highly qualified as they are associates of a national institution. Exams were conducted twice in one semester: a midsem and an endsem. Apart from that, few quizzes, weekly tutorials and viva voce were conducted.
Internships Opportunities
There are various companies hiring students as interns at SVNIT. Some of them include Goldman Sachs, BASF, JP Morgan and Chase, etc. There have also been various institutes offering research internship to students. These are generally offered to MSc students. IISc Bangalore, IISERs, TIFR are some of the institutes hiring research interns.
Placement Experience
SVNIT offers good placements. Students begin to recieve offers from 6th sem onwards. Companies visiting the campus include Accenture, Samsung, Byjus, Google, Goldman Sachs, Federal Bank and amny more. The highest package was 40LPA (domestic) in the year 2022. Average placement for all branches is 10LPA and for CSE the average is around 15 LPA. Percentage of students placed was 80%. For MSc Mathematics, the average was thrid highest among all branches in 2022 which stood at 9.22 LPA. As I have a passion towards economics, I will look for similar jobs and services as it is also aligned towards mathematics.
Fees and Financial Aid
One of the perks of studying at a public institute is the subsidised fee structure and a great ROI as compared to many private institutions. The total fees of the course for one year is approximately 1lakh INR which include a tuition fee of 75,000 INR and hostel & mess fees around 34000 INR. Scholarships are available in the form of fee waiver for the candidates whose family annual income is below 1 LPA. SC/ST candidates whose family annual income is below 8 LPA get a complete tuition fee waiver. SVNIT offers decent placements with the average placement in the year 2023 being 10 LPA for all branches. For CSE, the average placement was 15 LPA. My course offered an average of 9.22 LPA as of 2023.
Campus Life
Life at SVNIT Surat is something that becomes worth remembering in the years to come. One can enjoy in the campus as well as outside of it. The college being situated in the main Surat City, there are plethora of places to visit nearby. SVNIT has annual cultural fest known as "Sparsh" and a tech fest "Mindbend" both of which are conducted usually in the month of April. SVNIT has a well-equipped library with thousands of books including engineering, fiction, philosophy, novels, economics, finance etc.. Classrooms are spacious though smaller classrooms may be alloted in the first year. Some classrooms are air conditioned. The college owns a gym, tennis court, basketball court, badminton court, T.T rooms and snooker room. Inter NIT sports meet is the main attraction annually. The college also organises an annual cricket tournament called MMNCT. There are various clubs for almost everything: dance, singing, drama, debate, entrepreneurship and whatnot.
Hostel Facilities
SVNIT has seven boys hostels and one girls hostels. The first year boys are accomodated in Gajjar Bhavan. The common girls' hostel is called Mother Teresa Bhavan(MTB). At Gajjar Bhavan students are offered a double seated room. It has two messes. Quality of the food is decent and allegedly better than other NITs and some IITs. Om occasions, special meals are served. The Hostel fees including the mess charges is about 17000 INR per semester. Registration of hostels is done along with the admission process in first year and online mode from second year onwards.
Admission
SVNIT or NIT Surat is one of the 31 NITs of India considered as an institute of national importance by the Indian Government. The admission to this institute is through the JEE Main exam which is one of the most competitive exams in India. I was admitted to the integrated MSc program in Mathematics in 2022 at NIT Surat.
