A Story which can never be re-told

Remarks :

College management- It need more outlook developing. They require more focus on students and their future in careers. R&D is necessary, but job is also essential for some students also. Equal emphasis should be place don both the aspects.

Entrance Preview :

The exam to qualify in to M.Sc. In IIT KGP is JAM. This is the only entrance exam to get in to all the IITs. This exam is especially for those students who have passed their graduation and want to pursue masters course in the respective subject in any of the IITs. I have secured rank 20. Choosing IIT KGP, because no doubt it is one of the esteemed colleges of India

Course Curriculum Overview :

Course duration was for 2 years. The course is designed in such a way that it gives equal importance on theory and practical aspects. there are a total of 4 semester exams in the two year course. Every semester has 10 paper subjects each having grade score like Ex, A+, A, B, C, D and F. Out of these 10 papers, there are two lab papers which is basically your research subject. The duration and mark of this R&D paper becomes more in 2nd year course.

Internships Opportunities :

The college provides MCM scholarship, but it is not for all. This scholarship is for those who are from poor family background and who are also talented. It corresponds to around rs 1 lkh per two years.

Placement Experience :

Package and placement varies from year to year. It varies with the general trend in the economy. For example- in 2010, out of our total batch of 16 students, only 2 people were placed. However, in integrated batches of geology and geophysics, some people got placed in foreign companies like Schlumberger, Total, Cairn and BP. However, Indian companies like ONGC and Reliance did not select students from campus interview in that particular year. the packages of foreign companies like Schlumberger was around Rs 15-20 lakh, same also for Total and BP.

College Events :

Tech events in IIT KGP are the best and internationally acclaimed students do come. For example- KHITIJ is an annual 3 day festival which focuses on tech aspects and students from Israel come to showcase their research on various science subjects. Springfest is another socio-cultural event which is also famous in India, people from all colleges attend the same. Kumar Biswas like persons visit the festival. many technical events happen which are very frequent.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

Being government-sponsored, fee structure is feasible. For the two-year course, my total fee for semester was around rs 30000, but it was in 2010. So, for the complete two-year course, it will be around rs 1 lakh. however, scholarships are also provided to under-privileged students like from SC, St and OBC.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

MCM scholarship is one of the best scholarship offered by the college. Although I have not availed the scheme, because the criteria was that, your family income must be less than a minimum amount, which I did not qualify. Also, for that scholarship, you need a CGPA of more than 7.0

Campus Life :

Gender ratio is minimum in IITs, this is a fact. The truth is, for around 50 male students, there will be around 5 female students. Diversity is very high as people from all states and all regions have studied there, form north and south India. All types of student parties and night parties are celebrated. IIT KGP has a very open culture, especially regarding to male-female students interaction, no restriction on night time for ladies. It is very safe, for women and for all. Outsiders are not allowed due to high security. Robotics is an important concept as very high class R&D are done here.

Hostel Facilities :

Hostels are good, although I wont say they are very good. Food quality is best, specially they provide food 4 times a day. breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Every wednesday and sunday, special meals are organized. Also, Hall days are celebrated once in a year when very special meals are arranged. Rooms are usually sharing, but some people like me used to stay in single room. the general rule is- for graduate courses like B.Tech, you will get shared room in your first and second year, but in 4th year, you can get single room.

Alumni/Alumna :

Although I would say alumni of IIT KGP needs lot more improvement like IIT bombay and ISM and BHU. Considering many of the ex-IITians are placed in very high jobs, many are in outside India, it is difficult to develop a strong bond. I have got a chance to have meaningful discussion with my seniors which has helped me to have better bonding with my alma-matar.

Exam Structure :

Being in IIT, you always follow the busy schedule. The course is so tight that you never get enough time for yourself. Exams and labs are very frequent and even continues up to 9 pm sometimes. But, guys know how to live in IITs, they read and enjoy at night.

Admission :

First of all, you need to apply for JAM exam which is generally conducted in the month of March. So, the form is out mostly in the month of December, you have to fill the form and send it by post to the respective IIT which conducts the exam. Admission process is simple, as after your selection, you have to report your college with all the documents and after paying the requisite fees, you will get admission in to the college.

Faculty :

The faculty are well-trained and well-qualified. Most of the faculty have done their MS from IITs and also from foreign universities. For example, the subject of mineralogy was taught to us by Mr Mishra, who is an expert on the subject who has done his masters from Singapore followed by his experience of more than 20 years in various institutes.

Course Curriculum Overview:

If the student is quite serious to go for a PHD after completing his MSc from here, I would say it is a great choice but if one is looking for the option to explore some other field after completing his MSc from here, I wouldn't recommend of getting a degree from here.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The program curriculum encompasses Biological Sciences as well as it could have been. It is very elaborate comprising every branches from Instrumemtation and Methodologies to Cell Biology, Genetics or Molecular Biology for that matter. You are ought to have three theory papers and two practical and Grand VIVA papers each semester with a total of 4 semesters over two years. In the last semester, you need to prepare your dissertation. The papers include all the basic concepts and their applications and demands hard hours. I believe the syllabus can be relaxed a bit and the number of papers per term expanded and compartmentalised so as to reduce the load of individual papers. All the faculties are very supportive and Friendly and appreciate doubts and queries always.

Admission:

The admission procedure not so simple. It was quite tough. The students got admission in the course only when they cleared West Bengal Post Graduate Applied Nutrition Admission Test [WBPGANAT]. The eligibility criteria was B.Sc or B.Sc (honors) in food and nutrition/dietetics/ food technology with minimum 50%.

Placement Experience:

The college provided placements for each and every students. Most of the students got the placement through the college campus. There were many job opportunities for the courses. About 90% of the students got placement from my batch. Yes, the college also offered internships for the students.
